Ill take the fastest day to day, the nicest sounding, the nicest inside.......the RS3, don't really care if it under-steers at the limit on a track in wet, never going to happen in the real world.
Disclaimer - I own an A45. I test drove the Focus RS before buying. For 4 days. The A45 is, by a long stretch, the more rounded car. The interior reminds you that you're actually in something special, the RS has like 15 badges trying to tell you that. The Benz does it the second you open the door. Drift mode - awesome. Shame the A45 doesn't have it. If it did, there is no test on the planet that it wouldn't win.

Theoretically a great test, with a great bunch of top hot hatches... but all these tests and not the best car won! Don't get me wrong Focus RS is a great car, but Mercedes won alot of the tests yet it didn't win, just because the RS did a better track time. What's the point of all the other tests? Seems like a paid advertisement to me.
And having said all that i'd still have the RS3. Why do all these tests centre everything around track performance? 99% of our driving is done on the road if not all of it. I've test driven a new RS3. It's got unrreal power, the sound of the engine in Dynamic mode is amazing, it pops and crackles like a race car. It's so comfortable when you want it to be and mad when the mood takes you. Interior is second maybe only to the Mercedes and having the Quattro system on the road just makes so much sense. It's got tons and tons of grip. As an all round car it's the one I'd buy. Forget lap times, they're just numbers. These cars you have to live with everyday. Proper road testing should be done on the roads, not the track.
let me just say that the Subaru Imperza WRX Sti is not a Hot Hatch, it's a high performance sedan.
Went to Ford the other day, in hopes of checking out the new RS. And they were sold out before any of them ever arrived. Bummer. That car looks absolutely amazing!

To save you reading all of the comments, I've summarised for you. Auto trader is a UK publication, so the review is based on UK driving conditions. There was no VXR because it's soon to be replaced. The weather in the UK is very often wet, or roads covered in leaves i.e. slippery. The M2 is not a hatch. The Civic wasn't up to the job. Mazda speed 3's are almost unheard of here. Any of the cars here can be chipped to make them faster. The Ford won because it was the best overall drivers car. The RS3 understeer is terrible. Ford did not sponsor this, they just made a fantastic all round, drivers car for people who don't spend all day on the track or just go 0-60 time after time
Regardless of the outcome, this was one of the best car reviews I've seen.
4 years on and Ford have cancelled making the RS.
Love the Focus RS and A45 amg...both amazing. Ford is just building some world class cars right now.
