  • Amid geopolitical turmoil over Ukraine, Russian President Putin is facing a tough response from some of the world’s youngest leaders. Not just Ukraine President Zelensky, the world’s youngest Prime Minister, Finland’s Sanna Marin has also been standing up to Putin. In the wake of Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, Marin has been antagonising Finland’s neighbour, Russia. Meet 36-year-old Sanna Marin, who became the world's youngest prime minister in 2019 and is now posing a big challenge to Vladimir Putin.

    People always talk about age. People should not put down others because of their age. This happened to my parents because they lived past the expected age limit here. With Ms. Sanna Marin age is a blessing because she has a very long career ahead of her. She is not only smart, experienced, educated, beautiful, but speaks perfect English. She is also a scorpio like me. She is a world hero. The people of Finland must feel very proud to have someone like her leading such a great and beautiful country too.

  • @weedidi7144
    @weedidi7144 Před rokem +59

    Yes this is all true, but I think it should be mentioned that in foreign relations the presidents office holds a bigger responsibility. So on the Ukraine/Russia situation and the NATO- membership Sauli Niinistö ought to get most of the recognition.
    This is not an attempt to minimise Sanna, who I quite appreciate as my PM, but this video gave me an impression of sensationalism.

    • @andredemony
      @andredemony Před rokem +11

      You are too soft on this piece. A lot of the claims are not true at all. Niinistö has been THE face on this, not Marin. Stuff like: "Marin decided she would apply for NATO membership" is just not true. As you know, the parliament voted - 188 votes in favour vs 8 against (4 absent) and this is what determined the official request. This is literally a shared National responsibility politically speaking. I understand it is more media-sexy to put Marin in your videos but changing the story is not ok. Also she is not provoking Putin. Moscow was the one provoking when they said out fo the blue in March: Sweden and Finland cannot join NATO.

    • @weedidi7144

      @@andredemony You're absolutely correct. I was indeed too lenient in my criticism.

    • @sampohonkala4195
      @sampohonkala4195 Před rokem +5

      @@andredemony I have to disagree on that. "Marin decided she would apply for NATO membership" is of course not true, but legally it could be. The government with the president would not have to take the application process to the Parliament at all, it could just apply. The Parliament will ultimately decide about membership, but that will only happen when all member states have ratified the documents - a mere application does not require approval of the Parliament. The president is needed in the process, but the president has no power whatsoever to start it. It is for the government and the PM to start the whole thing, otherwise it is a no go.
      Marin was very active in explaining that she wants a support as wide s possible for the application and that is why it was taken to the Parliament. Moreover, Marin was very active in the process of getting Sweden onboard, and that is because in Sweden the issue is even more on the shoulders of Magdalena Andersson. The discussions as far as can be known from any news sources took place between the prime ministers, not Niinistö and Andersson. I would give quite a lot of credit to Marin about how the Nato application process was handled, and especially how the co-operation with Sweden went.
      I am also rather sure that Marin being on the left even among the social democrats helped to get the vote as clear as 188 - 8; the result might have been less overwhelming if the PM was a conservative war hawk. Marin gave an extremely strong speech on the relations - or literally the termination of the relations - with Russia at the SDP meeting soon after the war broke out. Of course we have to give credit to Niinistö, Haavisto and Vanhanen as well, but I would say Marin was a key figure - not necessarily wanted to be, but the issue is such that the PM is in the very center of it all.

    • @andredemony
      @andredemony Před rokem +1

      @@sampohonkala4195 Yes, I don´t disagree with your description, actually, especially Marin´s key connection to Stockholm - my beef is with the idea that Marin has done it all on her own - which is obviously not true. Niinistö was more visible to a foreign audience to my eyes - Especially US media, which is key in terms of who made this video - I mean in terms of internal politics here in Finland not many needed convincing.
      I am not so sure about Marin´s influence over vasemmisto vote for example. The greens and internal SDP vote? Yes, sure but Vasemmisto? When someone like Dan Koivulaakso changes his mind about NATO membership, you know there is something special going on... For me the headline here is the national consensus.

    • @yksvaan1690
      @yksvaan1690 Před rokem +3

      You're not giving enough credit to Marin though. President Niinisto could (constitutionally) only step in once the domestic part was complete and the matter decided in the parliament. And it was soon obvious that Marin had just as much initiative and drive behind the scenes as Niinisto, from their first security council (tp-utva) meeting on 25 Feb. Sweden's press didn't even talk about Niinisto in the same connection until his visit to the Riksdag. Note how their narrative changed literally in a day from "two centuries of splendid neutrality tradition" and "should we discuss NATO before or after the Fall elections?" to "Sweden and Finland together!" on Marin's Stockholm visit. (The tactical biker jacket and all... Sweden needed to break with tradition... and PM Andersson needed the spotlight away from her party's extremely awkward U-turn away from their defining, signature policy.)
      It's pretty clear now that Marin has been pro NATO since at least the massive Afghanistan evacuation operation, and possibly before that, having seen it in EU27 meetings, how it is another dimension in all European security discussions. She has proven to be a fast learner.
      Not blaming you, but it has been almost nauseating to follow how meticulously a faction of Finnish mainstream media has been erasing Marin from the picture, to heap all of the praise to good old Niinisto. The process reminds one of those comical old Soviet political photos. When in fact the wise old curmudgeon was still last year dreaming of a OSCE (ETYK) 50th anniversary summit in 2025 with Russia included... His Russia policy and his special relationship with Putin was crushed in on 25 Feb and he now has some reason to thank Marin for preserving his legacy -- actually a new legacy he obviously didn't see coming last year.

      @@charlessevigny Well, Russia has been threatening Finland and Sweden with political and military consequences if we should join Nato. All this started around December 2021. Basically what Russia has said, is that we don't have a say within our own decisions. That we're somehow inferior, less sovereign than Russia. We don't get to make our own decisions, but we should seek Russias approval beforehand.
      This, of course is not acceptable. We are both independent and sovereign nation and as such we get to make our own decisions. And Russia just needs to respect that.
      Then Russia attacked Ukraine, and people of Finland and Sweden realized, that they're not only capable of threatening their smaller neighbours, but they're willing to actually massacre their neighbours as well. We don't want to be next on Russia's imperialistic agenda. That's why we decided to seek Nato membership.
