    Burglar is good for these main niches:
    -Specific challenge runs where a car is needed almost day 1. Sprinters, mods that deteriorate cars as the game goes on, rare+ loot games, etc
    -Multiplayer. PvE, you still compete with players for resources. In PvP you can use cars to wipe enemy players as a fresh spawn weapon or steal from groups faster. Dedicated parasite from enemy bases.
    -using a burner survivors life in your world to go on a really dangerous loot run. I almost lost a character going into Louisville because there were so many zombies the game couldn't stop from freezing, so after getting out of louisville, I created a 2nd character to spawn into Louisville, grab what I needed and get to the checkpoint.
    -Nimble lovers. Nimble is such a great skill yet one of the worst to grind. I would say the -6 points is worth it for just that lvl 2 nimble and +100% multiplier to nimble. To outpace any sized horde with melee and guns is huge, and if you are gonna go for a clear em all type of playstyle, it's invaluable. Especially if the peak zombie population hasn't been hit yet.
    Overall, burglar sets a lot of players up with training wheels and bad habits, relying on the cheap and quick method of getting a car rather than taking the time to get one and maintain one. If you can get vehicles just like magic on day 1, you're gonna develop a use em n lose em mentality with cars. You'll be a lot more reckless with vehicles, crash more, play too fast and stupid, and die. This will sting a lot more if you actually get a few months into a world and can survive, only to die from a broken leg, zombies surrounding your car, blunt force trauma from the crash, or crashing in the middle of nowhere and you die of thirst or hunger. It's better to learn to hotwire with skills because you'll develop more self control and good habits to keep your character going strong and long.

    I would say the Burglar is perfect for short-term survival or challenges but the benefits are useless on long-term.

    • @TheRealCaptainGold
      @TheRealCaptainGold  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Challenges, yes (depending on which), short-term? Not perfect. You don't need hot-wiring in most situations on day one (and finding keys is really easy on default settings), sneaking and light-footed at level 2 are dead-weight in the short-run and level 2 in nimble isn't going to vastly improve your survivability in the short-run. People really overestimate the value of this occupation. If it sucks in the long-run, it's likely going to suck in the short as well.

      @TheRealCaptainGold  Před 4 měsíci +5

      And if you start off with electrician, with amateur mechanic trait, you could have hot-wiring with just one Carzone tape. And you’ll be able to work on standard and heavy vehicles with no mags, plus no need for Gen mag and ability to move ovens and washers/dryers. So many better ways to get hot-wiring.

    Burglar is in a similar vain to veteran in how veteran is often compared to police officer. Police officer is the better pick in the long run compared to veteran however in the short term with no preparation the veteran is more effective. It is the same case for the burglar, it really depends on your settings and what exactly your goals are to make it good. Long term survival it is a bad pick but short term goals and/or shenanigans suit it incredibly well. Especially so if you are playing with friends. Having someone who can easily jack a car for you is nice in the early game.

      Veteran is better for me because I play on 4 hour days instead of default 1 hour. So days pass slower which means panic drop is slower.

    • @Trigger0x10c
      @Trigger0x10c Před 4 měsíci +2

      Without "become desensitized" I personally never choose anyone other than veteran, not having to deal with panic while in the middle of mowing down a horde of zombies is very nice. I don't want to down entire bottles of beta blockers over the course of a day long fight with the horde (also playing on 2-4 hours per day)
      With the mod though anyone's a decent pick, but I go for a police officer most of the time, a point in nimble, 3 in aiming and 2 in reloading is pretty much enough to raid an armory and start clearing out the vicinity

    Burglar is essentially a short term survivor. Has a good initial toolkit but struggles to really build beyond it (or has so many negative traits to deal with that you can never be rid of). Long term survivors have harder starts but better prospects for later on with less negatives and the ability to gain most of what a Burglar has.
    If the devs ever fix the issues with stealth Burglar will be better. As it is currently they mostly bring initial mobility skills, can break into buildings slightly more easily and can hotwire cars without skill grinding.

    Burglar is deffinelty just an occupation to get JUST for the lightfooted and nimble skill, as if you add the gymnast trait, you'd get level 3 for both of those, including the 125% learning bonus, add fast learner and boom, learn nimble super fast, as its the hardest skill to level up, as with lighfooted it reduces the noise you make, and sound-based stealth is what matters in this game, sight-based you'll get spotted no matter what, due to the spotting check happening too often to even matter, thats why the sneaking skill and unconspicious trait are trash

    for me the reason why "the burglar " occupation looks like a scam:
    1: cars are great source of loud sound(it's even mentioned in the official project zomboid trailer itself)
    which means it's hard to use & max out the benefit of the burglar's sneak ability
    sure you can grind up to max lvls
    but as long as you're using cars frequently(thanks to the hotwire ability)
    you're losing the benefit of stealth over easy car usage(same with vice versa)
    2: 4~5 lvls of nimble is enough for kiting zombies
    yes starting with 2 lvls of nimble & the exp bonus is good
    but in long term gameplay: you'll eventually gain/"grind asap" for those 4~5 lvls of nimble
    and in short term gameplay: the benefit of those exp multiplier kinda goes to waste
    3: the starting points of "-6", which is the 2nd most expensive along with fitness trainer & metal worker
    and this either "forces to play around with more negative traits + less opportunity to play around with positive traits(which can be fustrating)"for new players
    and "play a different occupation since hotwiring is grindable & pz's stealth mechanic is luck based + also grindable" for experianced players

  • @cheesechad2826
    @cheesechad2826 Před 4 měsíci

    the burglar is perfect for long term survival in my opinion, because usually if you wanna survive more than just 3 days you need to be sneaky and unnoticeable, and being a burglar not only allows for sneaky movement, but allows hotwiring of vehicles which if in a sticky situation you can escape by hotwiring a car and driving away, and yes you can upgrade electrical to give you the ability to hotwire, but usually getting electrical up is pretty hard, you have to read books for xp boost, and also dissasemble electrical items such as a lamp or radio. and for looting purposes you can easily open windows without the lock breaking, allowing for easier in and out looting runs. It's one of my favorite occupations in the game for its fun early game, and its very fitted late game

    • @TheRealCaptainGold
      @TheRealCaptainGold  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I’d say being stealthy is sorta niche. I’ve never really had to be stealthy, aside from rare instances and even then I managed just fine with low levels in sneaking and light-footed.
      Electrical level 1 is easy to get to. Dedicate one day to tvs, watches, lamps and radios (which you can farm from cars) and you’re good. Mechanic or electrician occupations make it easier to get to hotwiring while providing better benefits. Plus, getting a car isn’t hard without hotwiring. Trying to escape a horde by hotwiring can backfire - sometimes it takes multiple attempts to Hotwire, so that’s a bad habit to get into. And the whole window opening bonus? It just reduces the chance of the lock breaking - it’s not 100% guaranteed. Take stout or strong and you’ll open windows better than a burglar.
      Only good thing about the burglar is the level 2 to nimble.

    Having Fast learner does not increase XP gains for Passive Skills like Nimble as you claim it does here 1:54
    only by taking gymnast will you be able to learn nimble faster if you do not pick a class with it at start
    also starting with 2 Nimble does not increase XP gain by 100%, but actually 400% increase do to an error in the calculation made by the game.
    This is why only 1 starting point in a skill matters, anything more than 1 level at start is insignificant because it only jumps to 500% and so on for every additional point at start. This is why i always pick gymnast and Handy, the 4x xp bonus to maintenance and nimble (the skills that take the longest to level up)

    • @TheRealCaptainGold
      @TheRealCaptainGold  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I was under the impression that nimble was an agility skill, not a passive skill (according to the wiki). If the wiki is right, then fast learner does affect nimble (as it explicitly excludes only passive skills; only two being strength and fitness). I’ll look into it.

Desensitized is by far the best long-term profession related trait in my opinion. Panic will get you killed when shtf, it cripples everything that would keep you alive. Yeah you can do what you said in the second paragraph, but conveniently you could also just pick the burglar trait, and then spend all that other time and the other trait points on other stuff that could make you even better. I don't think Burglar sucks I don't think it's good, factually it has pros factually it has cons like everything, it's just completely personal preference, many people will see this and think the pro's outweigh the cons many people will never pick it again. @@TheRebTRThat's because the Burglar does have more cons than pros... That's the point. Aside from very niche challenges, if you care about building a good survivor - you shouldn't pick it. If you don't care about good survivor builds and if you like role-playing (something I enjoy doing very much), then it doesn't really matter. • @Jedi_Vigilante
      @Jedi_Vigilante Před 4 měsíci

      @@TheRealCaptainGold Except you aren't being objective either. The point being made is that if you need two different occupations to mimic the effects of one, then there is SOME advantage to the one, isn't there? Many people like to use the saying "A Jack-of-all-Trades is a Master of none" as if it is a bad thing, except the rest of the saying is "but oftentimes is better than a Master of One." The Burglar is that Jack-of-all-Trades, and the unique mix of abilities gives it better flexibility than either of the other two occupations you mentioned.
      Beyond that, your specific gripes with the role were entirely luck-based. Sure, you COULD find a good car with a key in the first two days... you could also (as I have several times with default loot settings) go for a week and a half without finding a key/car combo that is actually functional (i.e.-all parts aren't red). Sure, sneak doesn't help you when you are walking in plain sight through an empty field about 20 feet from the zombies... but maintain a reasonable distance or keep obstacles nearby and sneak is actually functional, kinda like it would be in real life. Sure, you could get hotwiring by picking Mechanic, finding an Electrical book, reading it, and then finding 50 items to scrap... but you could also go that route and fail to find a wrench or propane torch/welding mask for 2 weeks and have largely useless points in Mechanics.
      Finally, you mentioned the "counter-options" to the Burglar's inherent abilities, but you didn't mention their costs. Strong may be better than the Burglar trait for opening windows, but it also costs 10 trait points! TEN! That's a lot of trait points to compensate for, especially if you aren't going to take the free gimme negatives because they currently lack a function. Similarly, Gymnast costs 5 trait points and only gives 1 Nimble and 1 Lightfooted. By your own account, 1 point in either one is largely pointless so why would you spend 5 trait points to supplement a different occupation. Mathematically, that means you'd need to take a Police Officer to -9 trait points to get the same Nimble as the Burglar at -6, and the only advantage despite losing the hotwiring, window opening, and sneaking is you can use guns a SLIGHT bit better. I say a slight bit because you can get the Police Officer's gun skills without any XP bonuses in a few shotgun runs pretty easily and the starting stats in those skills aren't good enough to make a functional difference with most gun types so you'll want to start with a shotgun anyway.
      Is the Burglar the objectively best occupation in the game? Of course not, but NO occupation should be objectively better than all the others. That would be unbalanced and render the entire occupation system irrelevant. The fact that it has advantages and disadvantages means it is balanced. You personally may prefer other options due to your play style, but that in no way renders the Burglar a "scam", especially when compared to some objectively bad occupations like the Electrician or the First Aid occupations. It is kind of like saying a minigun is statistically better than a .22 rifle so the .22 is a scam... except the minigun costs a ton of late-game grinding and you can't find more than 10 rounds for it while the .22 rifle is starting gear and its ammo abounds everywhere.
      P.S.- A better way to put the OP's final sentence is rather than saying "they may be factually better" is saying "they may each be statistically better in one narrow parameter, but you can't put all of them together to get the same benefits for a lower cost". In fact, you can't put them together at all because you can only choose one occupation. Meaning that your alternative suggestions are meaningless because they all sacrifice some core component for an often worse version at higher trait costs that still require RNG to be functional.
