    One of the ways to tell what is the most effective tool, look at what tool is used when there is a very high chance of needing it such as a major disturbance. They nearly always use a solid baton and not an expandable baton. The expandable does offer much more convenience when being carried.
    A major drawback with the whip is it can't be used to jab or block.

    I agree with you on the last baton you showed. Using something that looks like a whip being used on anyone is not going to go over at all with the public. Good Video. Thanks!!!

    the cops around me are trained to never use any of their tools to cause harm unless absolutely unavoidable. Know a guy on the local police force who's never used his extendable baton and only discharged his gun once to break a window and save a baby trapped in a car. he's been serving for 14 years now.

  • @ratatattat5386
    @ratatattat5386 Před měsícem +2

    The rapid rotation baton is just an adaptation of the traditional sai. There’s also a similar weapon called the jitte which had just one prong. The PR-24 from the tonfa and the adaptation of it comes from Master Tak Kubota, same man that brought us the Kubotan keychain, also meant for police originally. As we’re on that subject you should also include use of the Yawara stick. First use of it for police was credited to Frank Matsuyama for Denver PD. There were eventual incarnations of that like the Safariland “judo” stick. Nobody uses Yawaras or Kubotans in police anymore but you can see the vestiges of it in the pommel ends of the PR-24 and some Kel-lite flashlights. Use of objects like the Yawara is still evident. The handle end of the stinger whip is just a type of Yawara stick. Also a collapsed expandable baton can be used like a Yawara. IMHO, the usage of short palm weapons like Yawaras and Kubotans should be a part of a police officer’s arsenal. In terms of optics to the public eyes, it makes perfect sense and it makes use of something like the stinger whip possible when it’s held in its shortened form.

    Check your local laws, some locals consider this a lethal weapons and require proof of training with them- similar to when you get training for concealed weapons permits. When I was trained on the PR24 we were NOT allowed to use them in deadly ways, like to the head, etc.

    JFYI, the generic term for the "Tonfa (which was adapted/derived from millstone handles) type" batons is a Side Handle Baton. The PR-24 is the name of a side handle baton made by Monadnock (Protect & Restrain, 24 inches long). Aetco is another manufacturer of side handle batons but we would not refer to an Aetco side handle baton as a PR-24 (because that's trademarked by Monadnock).

    • @frontenac5083
      @frontenac5083 Před 4 měsíci

      No, the tonfa is not adapted from a freaking millstone handle!
      Can we stop once and for all with this ludicrous nonsense?
      A tonfa is a tonfa, i.e. a weapon, that's all.
      Where do you imagine the sword comes from? Do you think they repurposed a letter opener or something? Obviously not! It's its own thing. Same with the tonfa. I don't get why people always want to find its origin in something else...

    When issued the hardened steel PR 24 with aluminum expandable body was priceless.
    We rarely expanded it. The steel portion was all you needed. Only drawback it was a in close fighting weapon. Getting cracked on the bridge of the nose full force with the heavy steel portion usually took the fight out of someone. Especially with relentless repeated facial strikes. Needless to say this was before bodycam existed. The expandable ASP is total crap. It like doing battle with a cheap twig 😂

    What a great Video ! When I first went into my Dept we carried "Night Sticks" we actually would be disciplined if we went in on a job w.o it, Or a car stop etc. In the US Coast Guard we Carried The ASP Collapsabile Baton . My Municipal Dept Switched all of us over to An ASP and I can assure everyone from experience, Josh is spot on, it can be taking off of you Rather quickly esc. If thebperson is on PCP Meth and or Drunk. I have seen it taking off of officers first hand . It's my personal opinion the night Stick Used in the right area , elbow, knee cap , collar bone is extremely effective ..
    The Asp Baton, for Most people I have delt with or seen, basically just stings and they are quick to grab it .. I no longer even carry an ASP Baton . If it has escalated that far , I prefer FOX 5.3 Pepper Spray . Great video!!!Looking forward to seeing the rest !!

    The thing isnt so you don’t drop it.
    You hang the baton from the thong wrapped around the back of your hand with your hand about 1 1/2 inches above the butt of the baton. Then you roll over your hand in the opposite direction of the thong and it sucks your hand into the baton handle. It makes a really positive grip on the baton.

    In all seriousness many states consider the public using batons as deadly force. Check your local laws before trying to plan on using a baton as a less lethal option. You may end up in a cage. Especially those collapsible batons. Even the police where I live cant use them to strike bad guys unless lethal force is required. They are excellent glass breakers tho. Some even come with carbide tips that just fly through car glass. Honestly as a civilian I would prefer a tball bat. Or even a hammer. I live in one of those states where its lethal force either way tho. Your mileage may vary.

    The rapid Rotation is basically a wooden Sai pretending to be a Tonfa. The Tonfa is a Flail, designed to use the inertia of the swing. The sai is a baton with forks/tongs on the side used to subdue and grab weapons. They can both swing back to use as a block though.
    They basically didn't understand how to use the Sai. It requires more skill to use than the Tonfa but it's very efficient also.

      Ok, it’s not just me. There was quite a bit of history missing from this mail order list (I’m pretty sure no department went right from the wooden truncheon to the PR24 without stopping at the straight baton) and nobody with any real world training brandishes a collapsible baton (“show it to them”) and expects that the sound of the baton expanding is going to deescalate any situation. That’s like saying that you can stop a home invasion simply by racking a shotgun. I rarely comment on CZcams videos simply because social media is full of opinions but there is a whole lot of misinformation here.
