@Mr Lex The opposition party wanted to have a new election before the term of the current gov was up. They claimed that the gov was not doing a good job of governing and hence had no confidence in them continuing in power. Some of the reasons sited was the closure of a sugar plantation due to the fact that it was loosing a lot of money and they didn't believe it could be turned around, also they claim that their negotiation to allow exxon to begin the first oil production site did not produce good enough terms for the country (the opposition thinks they could have done a better job), those were the main issues.

I'm from Suriname, and wow, it was jaw dropping to see the level of mob-like behavior. The speaker was just very partial as anyone would see, and this definitely isn't a sustainable parliamentary culture. Although the guy had his reasons to support the no confidence vote, his colleagues don't have the right to harass him like that. It was very awful to watch. I think this is a very bad precedent being set. An MP has the right to deviate from the general party line if he deems necessary, if that can't happen, why then a democracy?

Its called a democracy, not a mobocracy. Ruling by fear and intimidation doesn't bring one anywhere. Suriname political culture is fortunately not that hostile, we tend to respect each others point of views, even how decisive it my be. We don't riot during election time, and we don't do voting suppression and intimidation.Perhaps something you guys could learn about us.

That said, it seems everyone has missed the intrinsic factor here which is that the opposition leader masterminded this strategy to oust the government with a very high degree of precision. He was so astute in his accomplishment that in his closing remarks he could play with irony in his debauch on the defeated government klan. Citizens hearing his discourse will tend to believe he was being conciliatory. Those are the machinations of a well versed political mind. It´s just a question of time for him to go for the big kill, i.e. win the impromptu elections, and Guyanese of all breeds can be sure that he has got the right cards up his sleeve. The advice offered is this; don't trust politicians. It is their nature to tear through ethics, morality or whatever to secure power and hold on to it. Usurping it in every and all fashion. The citizens? They are just an irrelevant detail.

Gov. duty is to protect its people, integrate the nation, and foremost protect the nation resources -- This goes to all parties --- Guyanese must not let no party what so ever, take its little population for granted.. Guyana need a party that respect its people choice... The PPP must learn from experience, and dont take majority Indo-Hindu Guyanese for granted, its important that their population is reflected in gov. jobs, and else where. The people that have been seriously suppress in Guyana are the indo-Guyanese, Hindus, and the Amerindians-- -- if Guyana should be united, respect for its people is a nr 1 -- not party should assume at this point that they APNU/AFC will not get huge support, even with the no confidence-- its time for all guyanese to unite and look out for their fellow Guyanese, that are constantly been subjected to bullying, and discrimination. What exactly does this vote do?
A motion of confidence is one used in Westminster styled Parliaments as a method of seeing if the Parliament has confidence in the government, without which, the government cannot govern. Westminster style government is dependent on one party or a coalition having a majority of seats in the legislature. So in the house, if a motion of no confidence is moved, the government side is expected to vote no, and the opposition is expected to vote yes. If the motion passes (meaning more yes than no) the government must resign, Parliament has to be dissolved and fresh elections must be held. If the motion fails, it's business as usual. The MP that voted yes and caused the commotion was a Government MP, voting against his own party.
