Intel's New "Baseline Profile" is a COMPLETE Mess...

  • Inte's baseline profile enabled vs disabled? What should we do? Well recently in light of instability issues being reported with i9-14900ks and i7-14700ks, Intel has forced motherboard manufacturer's to release new bios updates with a new profile option "Intel Baseline Profile". What this essentially does... well it puts on new 'power caps', which the exact numbers of those caps are still... a mystery... and the concept maybe seems good, but... that is in its' current state, it's just horrible. In fact this profile exhibits bizarre behavior in certain scenarios, where your B760i now runs 100 Watts ABOVE the 150w limit.... Ugh... Let's test and discuss.

There should be one target spec per SKU. There should be a maximum TDP and exceeding it should be considered overclocking (may cause instability, may invalidate warranty). In the case of a 'K' SKU, that single spec is 253W indefinite power duration. For any motherboard that cannot run that target spec - they should be required to list partial support and state how they limit the CPU. For example, 14900K *partial support (253W, 65 second duration; 125W unlimited duration) or for a 'B' chipset if it's 150W power limited, 14900K *partial support (150W, unlimited duration) and whatever combination there-in as required. It's not the end of the world that Intel has a range that it can operate in, but it needs to be very clear how it is supposed to operate and shoppers must know when a partner product is going to cause their CPU to operate at lower than intended performance.

@@sikandarali9785 Let's be very clear here.
In productivity, between 7800x3D & 14900K , can ANY human eye perceive the difference without looking at the score?
Look at real world how the CPU is being used for productivity.
      Video editing
You edit 8K videos, scrubbing the timeline, and then exporting the video using GPU Acceleration anyway. In the end, it's GPU score that matters
      3D modelling:
You edit the model, drag and drop here and there, 4K workspace area, and then hit Render button. In the end it's GPU doing 99% of the work anyway.
      AfterEffects:
Again, same! You edit the FX, adjust the color, doing color grading, scrubbing timeline, and then hit Render. In the end GPU doing 99% of it.
      Motion Capture
Again, it's GPU that's doing the sense and scan.
      AutoCAD or SolidWorks
Perhaps this is the only thing that matters for CPU Acceleration because AutoCAD framework is based on 35+ years old source code that relies heavily on CPU, not GPU.
      Unreal Engine 5 editing
Bruh same thing. You drag and drop objects, adjust animation, lighting, and then hit Render. GPU will do most of the job anyway.
Sure sure the Productivity score of 14900K is higher than 7800x3D, but only the numbers. If human eye actually working on said project, nobody can tell the difference assuming both of them using RTX 4090 for example.

My 13900k needs 1.32v to run stable while rendering (and pass rounds of Y-Cruncher). When I used to overclock my old Intel CPU's, that's about how much voltage I'd give it for a 24/7 overclock.
When the 14900k came out, i replaced my 13900k but it needs 1.29v to run stable. I checked the SP score on an Asus board (not my daily driver board) and it came to an average score.

Yeah I like it when there are good low power options. I was discussing this with my brother, he has a 13900 and I have a ryzen 5800X. In my opinion, these products (even my CPU) are premium, and having the CPU fans go VROOOM when you pop a web browser and have your room get unbearably hot is not a premium experience. I undervolted and locked my clocks at 4GHz on my CPU and the system is running a lot nicer now. And my brother is complaining that his rig with 13900 + 3090 gets super loud and makes his room too hot as well.
This is also a thing with laptops. A lot of my college buddies have windows gaming laptops that constantly sound like they are going to take off, and my Thinkpad T480 that runs a very minimal linux install is whisper quiet and runs decently fast. Goes to show that solid hardware (doesn't have to be latest) plus minimal and tweaked OS can offer you one of the best experiences out there.

Depending on your price point though am5 is a great value now. Though I think if you’re looking at Intel, at least in the USA, z690 boards can suddenly be found dirt cheap. Look on Newegg, they have ddr4 and ddr5 z690 boards for as low as 120-130 dollars. At that I can’t see buying a b660 or b760 unless your budget is just that tight.

their 'bios updates' and recommended settings are literally just enormous bandaid patches to try and get all the people with struggling cpus over the warranty period so they don't have to worry about them anymore.
all it takes is one look at the changes - PL limit, and the ICCMAX limit specifically - to realize your performance is going to be absolutely neutered + more volts are going to be shoved through for equivalent clocks. ICCMAX is just a bandaid for high stress workloads and absolutely neuters performance, it's a safety feature that the user should tune based on workload and THEIR cpus behaviour as to not drop so many clocks.
it's unfortunate really, because overclockers don't really have an issue with 13900k/s & 14900k/s, it's just the normal users who have no idea what they're doing and expect it to just work (which it should).

Both of them didn't want to give the no.1 spot in benchmarks to the other and went overboard with their decisions and in turns hurt the consumers, although in Intel's case it's arguably worse. IMO these days it's better not to jump too early to a new platform, and everything that runs too hot should not be even considered unless you want to be adventurous.
