  • This was one of the most picturesque camping spots I have ever stayed at!
I plan on wild camping in all 15 of the UK's national parks, this time it was the South Downs; 13 down 2 to go.

Hi Liam, just wanted to let you know that my son (8) loves your videos and we normally watch one just before bed time. Thanks to you we're going camping in a couple of weeks and if he likes it, we're doing a whole week during the summer holidays. He asks about a million questions for each video but I love that he loves your content. Keep doing what you're doing mate.

Nice video Liam, you made me laugh with those pies :) I live close to the South Downs so it is my common walking place, I would not recommend anyone camps or even gets too close to the edge like that, there have been numerous cliff collapses over the last few years!

Hi Liam, awesome video! However I think it's important to tell your followers, who may follow in your footsteps, that it's really dangerous to go anywhere near the edge of these cliffs; there is a lot of publicity from the park rangers, local news, local radio etc to ask people to please not approach the edge. There are very frequent rock slides, and bits of land breaking off the main section of cliffs, and there isn't often much warning, they'll just go from under you. Perhaps you could pin a comment or put it in the description as the vdieo is already published?

One thing id recommend for any potential future visits or for anyone else is dont camp/sit so close to the edge of the cliff. As someone who lives local those cliffs are well known for just how soft and crumbly they are (they are made of chalk after all) and pieces always falling off.
Funny? story, When I first moved to these parts I went up on the south downs exploring at night as it looked really cool, the mist was so thick I could barely see anything past a few feet in front of me. somehow, (there was drink involved lol) I kept getting turned around and every direction i walked i would soon hear seaguls in front of me and come to the very edge of the cliff suddenly, Id walk in the opposite direction and the same would somehow happen again after a while lol. I ended up just laying down admitting defeat and sleeping it off there on the ground in the thick mist for a few hours until daylight

I've watched this video a few times now, not least because it's about a place I walk a lot.
I'm not sure I'd ever have the courage to go wild camping there - or that close to the cliff edge - but it's great to see that it is possible.
There are a few places you'd be a bit more hidden, but then of course the scenery wouldn't be so dramatic.
You also got lucky with the lack of wind that day.
The other thing to add, for others seeing this video, is that the cliff edge is a bit crumbly, so don't go close to the edge. What happens in winter is the chalk gets waterlogged, and then, if it freezes, ice expands and then whole sections of the chalk can separate. Coastal erosion is a constant thing, and you can read about the other Lighthouse in this area, the Belle Tout, which has already been moved back from the cliff edge, but which is now at risk again.

There is another beach to the east of the light house (Bell Toute Lighthouse), but the beach you're looking at is only accessible by Boat/Kayak. And let me tell you, looking up at Beachy Head from the bottom is crazy. Craning your neck, can't even fathom how tall it is. Loved this video as I live near here, but every video is infectiously positive :)

I know this is an older video (I've just started watching you) but if you're ever in East Sussex again, you can absolutely do the bottom of the cliff walk up to and past the light house at low tide; takes maybe four or five hours (it takes me that long anyway!). You can walk it from Hollywell in Eastbourne, around the bottom of the cliffs that you camped on, to Birling Gap. Once at Birling Gap, you come up from the beach and you're back on the Southdowns near Belle Tout lighthouse with views of the seven sisters. Lots of caves and climbing ledges to explore on route, as well as an up close of the lighthouse and some cool drift wood art. Leave Eastbourne a couple of hours before low tide.
