Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

Seriously, Discord Sudsers. Thanks for being there for my scary time. 🐝😬
Ugh… I hate hornets and wasps.
idk which of us was more scared us or you or us for you!
How do I find you on discord? I am new to that platform :(
Hey! Discord is open to all channel Members. There will be instructions in the community tab of this channel once you’ve selected your membership options. Info for joining in description box of videos or in the main page.
I love the colours & shapes of the soaps on the racks
Thanks! Ever changing. 😂
I do the water/honey mix added at trace because I have done it other ways and sometimes the honey didn't incorporate as well. It's an extra step but it has given me the most consistent results. It doesn't darken very much either.
something about this soap!!! it just looks delicious, Sooooo PRETTY!!! good job Mrs
That's a gorgeous bar. Honey & Lavender colors.
I hold back some of the water when I mix the lye. I add the little bit of water with the honey, and add in at a very lite trace. I don't get as much spotting or scorching.
Putting the honey into your warm oils, makes so much sense! Thanks for the tip.
I'm glad you're ok and didn't get attacked; I'm also glad you weren't 'alone'.
I still haven't done the Discord thing🤦♀️
We’re all so busy! I get it!
I put my honey in the lye water when it is cooling down. It turns brown, which is the colour I want for the bar. Winning!!
Perfect!
Oh boy, bees, wasp, hornets no bueno for me. I’m allergic…I’m so glad you are ok. Love all the honey bits you discussed. Amount, when, where and why. Love your details and simplicity. Thank you for sharing and have a beautiful night.
I've added it all 3 ways. I prefer to add it to the water before the lye. It scorches but I don't mind. I noticed that the soaps with honey don't get dos. One recipe I used a lot had 40% sunflower oil and the only time it got dos was when I forgot the honey. Could be coincidence though.
The soap came put gorgeous!! Thank you for the tips, it's appreciated as always! 🙏💫
Thanks! I was sad to see this whole loaf leave; wanted to look at the pretty for a bit longer.
Big yikes on the wasp brigade 😬 I am so thankful I’m not allergic to our buzzy friends because they always seem to be around in my yard lol
The honey thing is so timely! My next planned soap is a turmeric and honey bar! I haven’t been able to make it because the girls at work found a kitten that I volunteered to take in and I’ve been spending all my time with her instead 😅
Honey soaps are the vibe right now, it seems! 🥰
In other words learn to love the discoloration from the honey lol. I can smell those bars from here! 😍
Ohh it’s such a nice scent! And you’re a champ at leaning into the discoloration for your soapy designs. ❤️
@@MrsSoapAndClay 🥰 Thanks!! ❤️
Oh I loved this video. Can you do one about fruit or vegetable puree & how much to add plz! 😊And thank you!
Hey thanks for this one! I just got some of my uncle's honey and I am going to make him and my aunt some honey soap and some with the beeswax he gave me (once I figure out how to clean it). I am so impressed with that color!
Thank you 👍☀️
HOW was I just working on my honey soap recipe yesterday and now here you are with a honey video! The hive mind continues. Get out of my head!
You, me, AND Ms A all doing honey soap. Woah. We’re definitely not a cult.
Oh mannn I thought I totally wasted a batch and it was just discolored which is normal 🤦♀️ 😆
Ha! I used honey in my soap today! I put mine directly into my hot oils. I soap colder than normal (under 100F) when using honey though. Don’t want to scorch it! 😁
Why are the Sudsers and I ALWAYS in lock step with our making?!?!
@@MrsSoapAndClay we’re synched… but we’re not a cult! 😂
😂
I'm absolutely on board with the discoloration, because those are beautiful bars, but would adding the honey to water prior to mixing it in help to keep the acceleration a little slower? I'm so sorry I missed the Discord, seems I've been missing an awful lot these days.
This is the start of the mad season; we will all be missing loads of things until the end of the year! In the water it does loosen up the batter a bit, which is why people enjoy adding it to the traced soap.
When you add honey to melted fats what change do you expect and observe in the lather from the cured soap?
Great question! As I discussed in the video, honey is used as a type of sugar in soapmaking to increase the bubbly nature of a soap. Many people add honey or sugars to soaps that historically have a low bubble - castile et al - to increase the lather payoff.
I notice more bubbles for sure when adding honey to my melted oils. Especially in my palm kernel flake soaps. A little better moisture too.
How much honey you need to have this effect? 1% 5% of oil weight?
For the coloring? I tend to soap the honey at 1-3% of the oil weight, depending on how much bubble increase I’ll need. This particular one was soaped on the higher range of that, so I would try 3% if you’re going for the color.
Is it okay to add honey to a milk soap?
You can do that! Keep in mind that milks also have sugar though, so the potential to overheat the batch is higher. Otherwise, it’s a lovely idea!
