  • The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier-capable supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the General Dynamics-Grumman F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American Teen Series fighters, which were designed incorporating air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War.
The F-14 first flew on 21 December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the U.S. Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor, and tactical aerial reconnaissance platform into the 2000s. The Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system was added in the 1990s and the Tomcat began performing precision ground-attack missions.
In the 1980s, F-14s were used as land-based interceptors by the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force during the Iran-Iraq War, where they saw combat against Iraqi warplanes. Iran claimed their F-14s shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft during the war (only 55 of these confirmed, according to historian Tom Cooper), while 16 Tomcats were lost, including seven losses to accidents
The Tomcat was retired by U.S. Navy on 22 September 2006, having been supplanted by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Several retired F-14s have been put on display across the US. The F-14 remains in service with Iran's air force, having been exported to Iran under the Pahlavi dynasty in 1976.
Beginning in the late 1950s, the U.S. Navy sought a long-range, high-endurance interceptor to defend its carrier battle groups against long-range anti-ship missiles launched from the jet bombers and submarines of the Soviet Union. They outlined the idea of a Fleet Air Defense (FAD) aircraft with a more powerful radar and longer range missiles than the F-4 Phantom II to intercept both enemy bombers and missiles at very long range. Studies into this concept led to the Douglas F6D Missileer project of 1959, but this large subsonic aircraft appeared to have little ability to defend itself once it fired its missiles, and the project was cancelled in December 1961.
The Navy was still looking for a long-range defensive aircraft, but one with higher performance than the Missileer. The Navy was directed to participate in the Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) program with the U.S. Air Force by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.

Sucks that only 20% of F14s had the upgraded engines. 712 F14s were built, so 20% is only 146 of the 712 built had the great engine that truly made the F14 amazing.

The problem was that the United States was relying on old technology on a modern day aircraft it's kind of like a UFO running on gasoline the plane itself isn't junk it's actually perfect in every way in fact it was the plane that could literally destroy all planes even to this day if they just upgraded it

    • @olechristianhenne6583

The real reason why the f-14 was just so expensive that it was basically an UFO running on gasoline had the United States fully developed a nuclear nuclear power plant technology within Detroit we would have had nanotechnology within the f-14 was never designed to be a gas piston rifle in other words the idea having a single action pistol in a modern warfare tech is ridiculous works fine but World War III never happened and sometimes we need to go a little bit more forward the idea that we're running on pure EV technology is a bit of a selling joke

If you didn't immediately come to a stop if you were running the seawall before Penny lake on the approach path, the harrier would put you on your face. Violently. Been a long time since my family was stationed at mcas Beaufort, but I'd bet people are beyond thankful that housing for the air station is in Laurel bay, with the fact that flight school for the f35b is on the air station. Even in our house on Laurel bay, every so often I'd have to stop conversations with friends outside because of loud hornet passes, which I'm sure some were done specifically as I lived in officer housing, and quite a few of my neighbors were hornet drivers. I say as an Iranian
Without Tomcat, Iran faced many problems in the war with Iraq. Whatever Saddam Hussein brought from the former Soviet Union (types of Sukhoi, MiG and even MiG-25, even French Mirages and Super Thunder, etc.), they did not oppose Tomcat. that Iran had problems in supplying parts and missiles of Off-14).
Curse Khomeini and the Soviet spies who brought Iran to this calamity

Actually General Dynamics teamed up with Grumman for the design of the F111B since they had no experience designing carrier based aircraft. It was then that Grumman used the swing wing technology learned from their team up with GD to build the F14.

We don't sell the F22 raptor for obvious reasons but we sell the F35 which is insane, keep the top fighters for our own. 🙏🇺🇸

"With nine countries involved in its development (United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Australia), the F-35 represents a new model of international cooperation." It's joint venture programe. Not United States like F22.

For some reason Grumman was never a darling of the government even though like chance vought
Clearly made the best fighter planes for our country
The f15 is hailed and promoted as the best for decades
But let's be clear IT WAS NEVER BETTER THAN THE F14 WITH PHOENIX MISSILES
The f15 had no amram missile for years
We could have had the super tomcat
At a 10th of the price of the f22
Not to mention the yf23 black widow a vastly superior stealth plane much much faster both super tomcat and yf23 than the f22 and f15
Never would have needed the flop f35 a trillion dollar bust our pilots call FAT AMY because it's a useless dogfighter
It's amazing how politics screws us on so many different levels
