Jupiter Inlet is back open and today we had a nice swell creating a lot of angry waves. A big swell on this day led to one boat almost flipping over. It's not just the mouth of the inlet you have to worry about it's also the sandbar that forms just offshore. With the right swell the breaking waves on the sandbar can be a tough match for some boats and captains.

So many people aren't from the area here with these boats, or just moved here. PSA for anyone having to traverse jupiter on a rough day. As soon as you get out the inlet, make a hard left or right, the worst water is straight out. Watch the sand bar on the south side, it comes and goes and can get super shallow at times, if you see the waves breaking in the middle of nowhere, there's a reason. When returning do the exact opposite, but be very careful of the shoal just inside the inlet on the north side, stay towards the middle. The south side does not shoal like the north side.

I’ve ALWAYS done the left turn, cruise another couple hundred yards and then head out east! I’m retired from boating now, but I did it this way since 1973, starting out with my 10’ boat, 9.5 Evinrude O/B. Then in the boat I built in 96, 14’ 25 Evinrude tiller, day and night! Nights were kinda tricky, but after so many years of doing it, it just got to be second nature. Always made sure that the moon was out though, and it helps, believe me!

Boats that big, 40+ feet can be tricky to dock even with 4 engines especially if you're trying to "paralell park" at a dock with only a few feet of clearance on each end. I do shake my head when I see the bow thrusters on 30-35 footers with twin engines but not on a 40+ footer.

East wind and outgoing tide. Jupiter is narrow and shallow and the current is very fast moving, when the current meets the wind and waves from the east wind the waves can get big. There's moving shoal on the north side inside the inlet and a sometimes sand bar just outside the inlet to the south. Many people have died here.

@@8180634 gotcha. Very interesting and also very crazy! I wonder why they don't build a break wall just in front of it to possibly help. It's done here on Lake Michigan outside of the harbor mouths to get to the main lake. East winds can kick up 6+ft waves fast. Lake Michigan acts like an ocean in many ways. Thanks for the info
