I wanted to make this extremely short video because there were some stick sizes I wanted to compare. There is some debate around forums about 5a vs 7a drumsticks and even 5a vs 5b drumsticks (which I went over briefly in my last video).
These are really short videos just comparing the sound. 5a sticks are thicker/heavier than 7a sticks and will produce a bigger sound.
With so many different stick materials, sizes, tips, tapers, etc., it can be sort of annoying to try to sift through all the noise. I clear up that a bit in my latest posts, that are fairly similar, but still include some different facts about drumsticks.

I use 7a sticks. I tend to play similar to Dave GROHL (AKA really hard) I do tend to break a lot of sticks and I’ve tried using 5a’s ect... but I don’t like the feel of em at all.
I can understand that! 7a's are great for smashing around the kit.
I tend to use heavier sticks because I play a lot of punk and metal but I hate sweating so much. I just picked up Metal N sticks, the red tipped ones, and I love the way they feel.
Great video. I love 5A but might have to switch to 7A so my neighbors don't complain.
The difference is noticeable when you play them. I'd like to do another video about this 7a vs 5a and dig in more.

Nice comparison, thanks. Your review was great! On stage, drums and cymbals are already so loud. The sound guys always tells me to back off, and I'm using 7 sticks. I have always liked lighter sticks. I have never understood why anybody who plays with 5 sticks, but that is probably a bigger discussion. As drummers, we all want to beat the hell out of the drums, that is just what's built into our DNA. For me though, lighter sticks and playing hard is so much easier when dealling with the soundguy.

5b are my favorite. As a metal and hard rock drummer Vaters seem to last longest out of most imo. Was using the promark firegrain which would last about a week or less. The vaters are at least a week, sometimes 2 or slightly more depending on my intensity level. Tried the promark active grip and if I dont tape my fingers I get blisters within one song but they hold up for sure.
5b's are solid too! I can understand the issue with other brands. Promark has for the most part always been my go to. I used to play Vic Firth and toward the end felt those would break more often and so I swore I'd never get another pair. But... Then I got a pair of Vic Firth more recently and have fallen in love with this specific pair. They are about to break too 😢I like me some Vater sticks too!
How to compare the feel in the hands? a lot of people say 7A's felt like pencils/chopsticks.. but are they really that different?
There is a definite noticeable difference in the size and weight. I actually currently use 5a (and used to use 7a a long time ago) and can tell they have the extra weight I need.
I play 7a.. but ahead.. the Lars Ulrich signatures.. and they are great

Did you play 5A nylon? I've always had issues with nylon tips.
@@AttunedMusician yeah for a long time it didn’t feel natural to me this I didn’t know that tapping sound it’s hard to describe but with the wooden tips you can hear the rides natural sound whether it’s new or vintage cymbals

Yea! Agreed. I used to play 7a, but have since moved through a few stick sizes and have been using 5b for a while now.
@@AttunedMusicianI use the 5a Rebounds by Promark, I also love the 7a Nylon Manhattans and the 5a Vic firth Novas . Anything heavier than these I'm not interested in. Heavier sticks slow me down.

Badum Tshh.. I'm using Mpow noise canceling headphones, but I'm not even seeing them on Amazon anymore. I would recommend the Soundcore Anker Life Q20 noise canceling headphones. They're close to $50 on Amazon. I haven't done a video on headphones, but thanks for the recommendation. I probably should! Lol

Ah, nice. I guess they are over-the-ear headphones.
You put the noise canceling feature on? Or I guess you have your drums mic'd up and then they feed through the the microphone, into a mixer and then into the headphones and then you control the levels?

@@MaTTheWish Yea, a lot of time I'll practice with just headphones on, but I have some Audio Technica ATHM50 I use anytime I'm connected straight through the mixer to control levels, record songs, etc.

Absolutely, I actually prefer 5b.
I played Caravan from Whiplash better with a 7A
are 7a's good for punk or prog rock?
They are lighter, but you could use them. You may have to play harder due to the lower volume. 5a's would probably be a better choice.
On that note, back in the day, I used 7a's for years for heavier music. Lol
