    Is there a difference in the quality of the shingles if I buy Gaf Timberline HDZ from Home Depot vs from a roof supply store?

    How do GAF Timberline HDZ compare to the Landmarks? I heard GAF is difficult to deal with in regard to warranty work

    • @anticommoncore4065
      @anticommoncore4065 Před 9 měsíci

      You heard that just because more people install them than other brands. And that equates to more people not realizing a lot of their warranty coverage requires the use of a GAF Master Installer, or not installing 3-4 other additional GAF roofing products that are required to qualify for a particular class of GAF warranty.

    I have a 10 year old HD Timberline roof and I was told that it's bad and time to replace. That they only last 10 to 15 years? I have some black mold on mine.

    • @goosecouple
      @goosecouple Před 2 měsíci

      You replace it when you begin to see it leaking. Otherwise it is fine. One sheet of plywood costs you only about $85.

    gonna ask one more question. What does the GAF Timberline UHD bring to the table that the HDZ doesn't? Is it worth the upgrade to go up to the UHD?

    • @rdeleonxl
      @rdeleonxl Před 2 lety +1

      They're different, from my understanding. UHD has more dimension and shadow lines with stainguard plus, but HDZ has different tech like layerLock, a wider nail zone, and is lighter.

    • @anticommoncore4065

      20% more weight/less prone to blow off. Being that they're thicker they create a more architectural appealing shadow contrast than HDZ. 10% more copper and zinc for longer algae/moss protection.

    GAF HDZ is still inferior to Owens Corning Duration. Look at that "nail zone" on GAF and it's asphalt overlap. It's a joke. You still have to nail low in that zone to hit 2 layers. Otherwise you're blowing through that single layer.

    I prefer IKO DYNASTY. GAF is just a marketing company. They should apend their money on RND.... but we know GAF paid you guys, no need to deny it. GAF nailing zone is a scamm.. your "white nailing line" is the same thing on the old shingle. All they did was add a white line , it is not that they made it better. If you are a roofer you would know. But you are an office guy. GAF paid these guys. OC is way better too

    • @marcusthompson666
      @marcusthompson666 Před 2 lety +4

      Nah, you haven’t used them so you are speculating. I know this because If you have used them, you would agree. A nail zone can’t be a scam. It’s literally over 1” wide. How could that be a scam? OC does not have unlimited wind and 25 year stain warranty do they? Or a 1”+ nail zone… i respect your opinion but needed to call you out

      @@marcusthompson666 is HDZ's nailing zone over BOTH layers of the shingle?
      I've seen the larger nailing zone but the bottom layer is still small as before.
      Would you mind explaining a bit better about that if you can?

    • @marcusthompson666
      @marcusthompson666 Před 2 lety +1

      @@giogarcia4747 GAF patented a bonding method where the two layers are fastened together. It looks like hot punch marks across the back. This makes the bond actually stronger than normal tar drips holding them together without needing huge overlap in addition to a nail through both layers. This allows a large nail zone without the need to also nail through 2 layers.

    • @giogarcia4747
      @giogarcia4747 Před 2 lety

      @@marcusthompson666 thanks for the reply! I'm not a roofer, simply a homeowner... isn't the nailing area stronger when the nails penetrate 2 layers instead of just one though? I ask that since there's a zone for nailing, whether that's 1" to 4" or whatever the size of the nailing area is...
      if it doesn't matter if there is only 1 layer or 2 layers where the nail goes through, why is there are nailing area at all? Wouldn't that mean that you could theoretically nail anywhere above the line on the shingle?
      I'm just wondering if it's better performance when the common bond extends to the WHOLE nailing area, giving you 2 layers of material when nailed.
      Thoughts?

    • @marcusthompson666
      @marcusthompson666 Před 2 lety +1

      @@giogarcia4747 It matters in other traditional shingles if it goes through both layers because a lot are only tacked together with spots of tar adhesive. Its required.
      With that HDZ layerlock technology the actual shingle layer substrates are fused together which is much sturdier than glue spots. You can see the dotted seam across the back. The nail zone is also made of special finer granules so the duragrip adhesive helps them stick harder as well and allows them to provide the unlimited wind warranty. I think they did a roof with no nails and blasted it with wind or something on an old ad.
