Cannot understand for the life of me why 2nd gen T birds are so underrated and under appreciated by the collector car world. In the last few years they have actually dropped in value. Absolutely beautiful car.

Technically this is a 4th gen. Theyre very complex and not easy to work on. Limited parts, and dont drive as well as the eras competition (Riv, Grand Prix). The 428 cars usually sell well. Bargains to be had though. I've owned two, and have a 66 convertible now. More style than substance to be honest.

They really are complex for the era. Hydraulic windshield wipers, not electric. The gauge cluster.

The correct "Drive" on this Thunderbird is the second detent. The first detent is a "snow gear" that starts in 2nd, then shifts to 3rd.
The second detent starts in 1st, then shifts to 2nd and 3rd.
    Beautiful automobile!

My memory must be failing me. I thought the green dot was 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the white dot was (snow gear) only 2nd and 3rd. I think the confusion may be this: The old Cruise-o-matic had the detents as you describe. But the 1966 428 cars had the C6, and the two detents you mention had the two positions reversed.

@@MostlyBuicks I just call it the big circle and the little circle, and you put it on the big circle before you go forward...Can you tell I'm not what they call a "Car Guy"? 😊

@@garygraves7036 I've had a '66 for 25 years now. I never knew they were called Detents. To me they were just simple circles, one bigger than the other. 😊

FYI : Unless you had someone rebuild your transmission..and re rig it. ..as what happened to the one I just bought. Only way I get three shifts is in first detente.....so that is now my "correct " position.

Magnifique.

  • @discerningmind

The driver here has the transmission set in the wrong position for normal driving. It should be set to the green-dot, the next position down from where he has it. The green-dot allows the transmission to take off in first gear, then shift to second gear then to third (high) gear. Where he has the transmission set, the transmission takes off in second gear and then shifts to third (high) gear. That's a feature for slippery conditions like driving on snow.

The National Goegraphic magazines if you remember these had all the car manufacturers in the add sections , the 66 thunderbird was my favorite . The nieghbor Mr Hall had one sitting in his garage for years , he at one time pulled it out , even up close it was a site .

La Chrysler 300E de 59 à des faux airs de "Christine", j'ai été la voir sur le site de Memory Lane, elle est dans un superbe état, mis à part quelques détails d'accastillage intérieur, elle parait neuve, c'est ouf !
