  • In the midst of a Shohei Ohtani betting scandal involving his translator, Billy Gil does what he does best, as he questions all translators before Adnan Virk and David Samson join us. Adnan and David discuss the weight of what these allegations could mean for Ohtani and baseball and look at the potential best and worst case scenarios. David Samson also gives a unique perspective with his experience as former Marlins team president and working with Ichiro and his translator. Tony’s conspiracy theory board makes its return briefly before it gets him sent to the penalty box. Finally, David and Adnan share their top five Jazz movies.

The Washington Post published a feature article on Mr. Bowyer's identity. Although he declined to be interviewed in person, they succeeded in eliciting valuable comments from his lawyer, Diane Bess.
Beth acknowledged that Bowyer is a bookmaker, and commented, "He has never spoken to Ohtani, never met him, never emailed him, and the only person he had in contact with was Ippei." It is said that Ohtani's name was found in the bank's remittance records, but only Mizuhara was involved in the bet, and she asserted that "there is not a single athlete among Mr. Bowyer's customers in the first place."
When asked why Bowyer let a professional interpreter with an annual income of only six figures swim to such a high level of debt, she replied, "Why? Because he's Ohtani's best friend." On the other hand, she said that he "does not know" the face value of the debt that Mr. Mizuhara has.

Beth described Mizuhara as an "addictive gambler." Speaking to federal prosecutors investigating Bowyer, she said, "I got an inquiry from ESPN in January this year, and I called them (federal prosecutors), and I told them about Ohtani's involvement, but they didn't show any interest."
It's very clear that from the very beginning, Bowyer's target was Ohtani. Ippei was simply a bait.

Ohtani has a huge team of financial experts, assistants and support staff so it's easy for the left hand to not know what the right hand is doing. I worked in the Trust industry (managing wealthy individual's assets and employee benefit plans and corporate and government retirement funds, etc.) for 20 years and let me tell you, we were often understaffed, overworked, and each person was specialized, knowing their own particular job functions well but not knowing what other people's jobs were in detail. There was a lady officer in our company who had been embezzling money for years from one of her wealthy clients and the only way it was caught was that she went on a vacation and there just happened to be an audit while she was away and that is when the auditors found out; otherwise they would have never discovered the crime. When a lot of people are involved in an operation or organization, it is easy to not question every transaction and just assume someone else is monitoring things. It's called the "bystander effect" or "diffusion of responsbility" phenomenon. Kind of like the incident when Kitty Genovese was raped and killed in NYC and many people in the apartment building heard her cries for help as it was being committed but assumed someone was going to call the police or help her, so no one did anything.

I love how people are ignoring that Ippei , like all translators, is the guy who is responsible for getting these foreign born players settled in America. Making sure to get them id cards, helping with opening bank accounts, looking over loans to interpret things with accountants etc. Therefore, he was well aware of a LOT if not pretty much all of Ohtani's personal details including account #s and passwords. Ohtani wouldn't be the first famous and wealthy person to swindled out of money by an inner-circle person.

They're multimillionaire that live in the lap of luxury. The only players you could potentially corrupt are Minor Leaguers and maybe a bench player, they couldn't impact the game enough to be valued to "gamblers".

All the actual evidence points to ohtani. “The interpreter said he did it and the bookie is a bad person” is the defense. It doesn’t matter they aren’t going to dig bc they don’t want to kill their golden goose. If this was the old days then he would already be out but people in this generation want to believe lied to. At the very least, ignorance is not an excuse. He should be held accountable bc if he isn’t then anyone can use this defense to get out of any crime they want. A drug lord, “oh it was my butler.” It came from his account. If he was truly trusted an interpreter with these decisions then he should pay for his stupidity.
