One video idea I'd love to see - kind of a Japanese Maple unboxing video: what to do when your maple arrives (a lot of this probably depends on type of year and type of JM, but should we repot right away? leave it in your container for a year? do we need to fertilize that first year? or will the tree already have fertilizer from your nursery? should we put it right outside? or do your trees need a "break-in" period?) thanks for all of your videos I can't say how much I love watching them ALL!!

Thanks for the video. I saw this tree on your site and skipped it because it looked more like a spiky evergreen. Pictures dont give this plant justify, as watching in video and seeing the leaves move with the wind. Now I am thinking about getting this one.

From a distance, the tree looks a helluva lot like a cannabis plant. Someone saw the Mikawa Yatsubusa in my courtyard pond area. They reported to the police that there was Marijuana growing on my property. When the police arrived, they got a good laugh. But they were also intrigued by the plant. After asking, one of the officers took a leaf with him.
I have three Mikawas.. Two I have had for 3-4 years when I purchased them they were a little over 3 ft tall...now one is 7 ft tall not that wide, I'm really surprised how tall it has gotten in such a short time....should I be pruning? They are very healthy ,looking...the taller one is in mostly shade the other does get sun.
Why are Mikawas so rare to find in peoples gardens? I see a million Bloodgoods and Red Lace Leafs but barely see a Mikawa... Even the Portland Japanese Maple garden doesn't have one.
I just bought one in a one gallon; I believe they said it's an ungrafted tree. What other maples naturally have branching like a dogwood, and which one would grow the fastest. (Out of Japanese maples)
I like pushing limits. I bought my mikawa 2 years ago, and put it in a 12" pot tucked into full shade on the northeast corner of my house between my peaches, pears, hibiscus, crepe myrtle and covered swing to get it used to being in my horrendous 10A SWFL heat and humidity. It has leafed out and put on new growth both years. This spring it started getting shifted a few inches at a time to more sun. It will be making it's way to the east side rather than the north where it's been living. It will get sun most of the day there in the summer but have some shade from the grape vines. I did the same with my green cascade and it seems to have adjusted well.
The Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple originated as part of a wild tree found in the Tōkai region of Japan. This area used to be part of an older province, called Mikawa, and that is the origin of the name of this variety. Yatsu busa means ‘eight tufts’, drawing attention to the dense, tufted branches that distinguish this variety. This unique tree was found in the 1970s, and first grown in America by the Japanese Maple expert J. D Vertrees, at Maplewood Nursery in Oregon.
