That instrument is called a Kobyz and is native to Dimash's homeland of Kazakhstan. It was Dimash's idea to incorporate it into the composition of this song. This performance as well as many others from Dimash is almost too much for our mere mortal bodies and minds can withstand! Watching Dimash perform is a full body experience!

It is not only the instrument of Kazakhstan .But of the Turkic nation . The jyrau sings with a guttural, raspy timbre, in a style common to many nomadic groups of Central Asia, Mongolia, and Southern Siberia. Although this timbre was in the past associated with shamanic practice, living memory of this has died out but it is returning , and modern jyrau instead interpret the timbre as a vocal imitation of the kobyz itself.
The dears were lucky to watch this live on IG live by one of the dears standing next to his performance. We were stunned. Hopefully this will stay up. If not just cover the video. His concert in Kazakhstan is titled STRANGER and my son is taking me to see him live in September. Been a dear about 3 years and this song is on SPOTIFY. Thank you for promoting Dimash. One of the amazing numbers to come out of the collaboration between Dimash and composer Igor Krutoy (the pianist here). You might also remember Igor leading the standing ovation in the audience after Sinful Passion. After Sinful Passion maestro Krutoy came out of retirement to work with Dimash and as you continue exploring the world of Dimash you’ll see more songs he wrote specifically for Dimash’s unique abilities and range.

The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.

Dimash's first pop song in Kazakh for 5 years is due to be released shortly although he's having great fun teasing the Dears and every time he writes the word SOON on any of his social media accounts I can actually see that big grin on his face imagining the whole of Deardom letting out a collective groan.
At this point I think maybe he will do the premier of the new song at his concert and then release it to the rest of the world.

Dimash has been training/performing/singing every single day for his entire life! He sings constantly. He has said that if you cut open his head you would find music and if you cut open his heart you will find music. He does 3 hrs of training every day. Swims etc. and that is why his breath control is so incredible.

Dimash and the composer of this song, Igor Krutoy (at the piano), often use archetypes in their music. This epic piece evokes the journey of soul (wandering in ancient times, haunted by memories, and loves and lives lost ) as it finds itself in an expanded state of awareness (new ground, chance to know who I am, begin again). Hesitantly at first, even pretending to stumble a bit, but with growing confidence, Dimash takes us on a journey and with that last refrain, he totally owns this new ground.
Like in many of his arrangements, Dimash incorporates sacred music traditions of different cultures and ages into something uniquely his own. The music of ancient cultures often used chants, overtone, throat singing, and melismatic techniques to induce a hypnotic trance in the listener. This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys, Qobyz or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the mother (prototype) of all European string instruments.

The pianist is Igor Krutoy who composed this piece. If you see Igor at the piano you can be sure that he composed the song for Dimash. Igor Krutoy (Krutoy means 'Cool', *1954 in Ukraine SSR). He lives and works in Moscow/ Russia. He is singer, a world- famous composer and music titan in Russia (billionaire). His family is in the US now. Krutoy came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship.
Dimash said also in an interview about the collaboration with Igor Krutoy that it is important to him that the songs are written in such a way that there is room for variations ... so every performance of a song is a surprise and every Dear can choose his favorite presentation... I can not decide.
The lyrics were written by Mary Sharon Vaughn (*1947, American musician, songwriter and producer. She writes hits for famous singers around the world, including Lara Fabian)

We are having so much fun watching you on your Dimash journey. As you've been told, you have barely touched your foot into the waters of what he can do. He will constantly amaze you! You mentioned his stage presence. I think that is another thing that makes us fall in love with him. If he had that incredible voice but just stood there and sang, it would be terrific, but because he puts all of himself into every song, they become masterpieces! I see you are getting lots of wonderful suggestions. Since you talked about him being an actor, I would add Be With Me (the official music video!) to your list. In fact many of his music videos are mini-movies. While Be With Me is not one of my favorite songs by him, it will introduce you to yet another surprise vocal style, plus the tongue-in-cheek acting by Dimash is fun to watch. LOL, don't let the Dears push you around too much. I was a little bummed you didn't have the subtitles on "Sinful Passion" (because the lyrics are pretty lush) but I don't think anybody's gonna riot or anything. 😄The instrument in "Stranger," btw, is called a kobyz and is a traditional Kazakh folk instrument. And, yeah, I agree, it sounds really awesome. Especially whatever effect they have on it. Gives it a cool, kind of haunting vibe.
This one definitely gets stuck in your head. I find myself singing the hook at work all the time. I DON'T find myself singing much of the rest of it, though, because I'm pretty sure my larynx would explode. I don't have whatever alien voicebox Dimash was born with...

More about the Kobyz instrument--it is an ancient stringed instrument which is supposed to be the precursor of many other stringed instruments. It was considered sacred and was the traditional instrument associated with shamans--with illness, healing, and life and death. It has only two strings, and the musician plays it by sliding his fingers up and down the strings as he bows--he does not press the strings against the neck of the instrument as you do in most other stringed instruments (think of the violin or guitar, for example.)
I like that you played the video long enough to show Dimash thank the kobyz player--Olzhas Kurmanbek. Dimash has said that he considers this man to be the best kobyz player in the world. Dimash added that instrument to the arrangement--I think its wailing tones are essential in establishing the flavor of the entire piece.
You can hear the kobyz in some other pieces of Dimash--most notably in his music video "Quiran Elim". I recommend that piece highly, by the way--it is a prayer for his country and the world, written during CoVid. (there are subtitles in English for the part Dimash sings, not for the narrator at the beginning--The lyrics sung by Dimash are essential to the meaning of the whole piece--read them beforehand without listening to the piece, if you get a chance. Some of the imagery is a little difficult, but it is magnificent visually--Dimash codirected the video too.
