    Roadster, by definition, is an “open-top automobile with two seats.” A convertible may not be a roadster, but a roadster is definitely a convertible. What makes a roadster even more special is its appearance: usually a long hood and a short tail.
    There are many impressive roadsters, such as the Mercedes SLK and Mazda MX-5 Miata, but there is another icon: the BMW Z4. Personally, the Z4 is irreplaceable in my heart, because my first ever roadster experience was on the passenger seat of a BMW Z4.
    The original E85 Z4 was seemed by many as an icon with timeless design, a brilliant BMW creation while addressing many flaws in the previous Z3. However, today I am going to review the successor of the E85 Z4, a 2012 E89 BMW Z4 sDrive 35is, the top of the trims at that time. It seems that this generation of Z4 was somewhat underrated, given its not so "hot" popularity and the countless debates and comparison that puts the E85 on the throne over the E89. But as time moves on, more and more younger people may begin to realize that the E89 Z4 can possibly become another roadster icon. Seven years after, finally sitting behind the steering wheel, how would I see this iconic roadster that ignited my love for cars seven years ago? We will find out in today’s video.

    Thanks for putting in the time & effort for such an in-depth review & without pointless loud music that some people make 😉
    I totally agree that the Z4 E89 is one of the most handsome cars made. The interior design is also totally unique & it’s very rare to find a roadster with an electrically folding hardtop that looks so good both up or down.
    Today’s cars are looking more and more similar, especially the same manufacturer producing different models that look so similar in design. This only makes the Z4 (all generations) even more special and should last the test of time in design & driving pleasure.
    Once again thanks for the video, it’s people like you that keeps the enthusiasm going in cars from years gone by & hopefully for the future..

      @WhatWeDrive  Před 4 lety

      zlover compare to a Porsche counterpart, yes it could be stiffer. As for a daily sports car, certainly towards the harsher side. I personally find the other Z4s (28i for example) less stiff than the 35is.

      @@WhatWeDrive I don't know what the 28i is like, but the 35is is the topmodel of the Z4 range. So, was it really meant to be a daily driver? Also in my opinion is a Porsche a different class because of the high price and maintance costs.
      Edit; There is a big difference between the 35i (306 hp and 400 nm of torque) and the 35is ( 340 hp and 450 nm of torque, 500 nm in overboost). Not only in terms of power but also, stifness and a different exhaust system.

      @@zlover7777 Personally, I think Porsche has always been the more sporty brand of the two. The 35is was sporty, but the Boxster really is on a different level, and yes Porsches are expensive.

      @@WhatWeDrive I have found it to be very reliable. Last week did another 3400km Alpine trip.
      Never had any malfuntion with engine, roofmechanism or whatsoever. Never left me standing at the side of the road.
      Having said that, the chance of some costly repairs when you cross the 100-120kkm is increasing. Known E89 35i(s) stuff to break down are the high pressure fuel pump (mine's still OK). Fuelinjectors (had them replaced at 125kkm and while at it also the bobines). Rack and pinion are a BMW weak spot in general and in the Z4 as well. Mine is now making noises....It will not fail but I will have it overhauled.
      It is NOT a sportscar (in my view). It's a very fast cruiser, but not a Porsche wrt to steering and handling. But that's OK, as long as that's your starting point.
      You can cruise along at 1500rpm with an allmost American V8 burble from the exhaust, then floor it, and it'll snarl to 7000rpm pushing you in the seat.....

      Last year one of the front shocks started leaking. Electronic adjustable ones. Replaced both. 1400€ which is a lot of money, but can happen with this mileage.
      The valve gasket had been sweating a while. Replaced it and cleaned the engine.
      The exhaust valve was rattling. Didn't replace it, but fixated it in open mode.
      Front wheels were devoloping a metallic ticking noise in sharp corners. Had some friction disc mounted between wheels and hub. Few bucks but a lot of searching.
      Oil consumption is less than 1 litre per 20.000km.

    It is truly underrated as you say when you consider the 1M engine everybody loves...and if you look carefully this car relates to the famous BMW 507 which was the halo car of all time for BMW. As for practicality, I have zero issues with 310 litre space with roof up is no issues.. (it's bigger than the new G29 boot space) I easily carry two fold down beach chairs umbrella and normal food stuff cooler etc for the beach and can carry the normal weekly shop, all you need is a little planning and efficiency of use. It was my biggest concern when buying this... The firmness of ride is resolved if you swap out the horrible run flat tyres BMW loves so much. You will get lots of looks and compliments...people see this as an affordable sports tourer...and it is... Are there better cars, sure... but price will be difficult to match and if you want individuality...this is a good choice. The roof is great for security as well... all in all, it's a very liveable daily driver... for a family of two. or excellent value second car... :-)

      @@lukamilas8648 I only drive mine in comfort mode when on a long trip on the interstate (which rarely happen lol), other that I use sport mode and of course paddle shifting 100% of the time. Sport modes have the same power u just get stiffer suspensions and faster shifting. Even if u keep your car stock, you should look into getting a MHD Stage 1 tune (easy DIY) for extra power but the fun is you will be able to setup a tons of options on the car such as exhaust burble, throttle response, deactivate kickdown so you are in full control of the shifting, ...Anyways once you start to mod it, it will turn this already amazing car into a monster and that can get you in trouble real quick lol (I should currently be over 400hp with stage 2+). Also make sure to ditch the run flat tires for Michelin Pilot Sport 4S as soon as you can it will make a HUGE difference in handling and also it will prevent your 19" M wheels to crack as even hitting small pot holes on run flats will crack them as they are so fragile.

    Nice review. I have 2009 Z4 35i and I love it. I like BMW as well as Porsche but there is a clear winner for me. As I mentioned in reaction to other comment I am 1.94 (6'4'') and therefore I have limited selection in terms of cars. ;) I tried Boxster but do not fit well and feeling was little claustrophobic (like I am in luxury car which is compressed around me). Another thing is hard top which means that Boxster had big disadvantage for me. Porsche is better for sport driving but I am not a racer and do not attend racing days on close circuits so it is useless for me. Sound in other hand is IMHO more importand to enjoy driving in borders of speed limits and there is BMW a clear winner with all those cracks in deceleration.
    P.S. another fun fact which is also iportant for me. Even everyone mentiones small trunk space - I am a golfer and there is no other small car where I can fit my bag and even trolley in trunk. ;) So one thing is volume but other is usability.

Only downside being it isn't as sharp as the Boxster but it isn't a totally crap either. A good compromise if you ask me.

    I don’t like the 35iS much. Lovely engine, but it only comes with a double clutch automatic transmission and the steering wheel shifting flaps. I understand why this makes sense in racing cars where a tenth of a second counts and I understand why in supercars with twice the power is a necessity. But this car is simply a sporty car, so I want to do the shifting the traditional way. Comfortable cars should have a traditional automatic transmission, track and super cars a double clutch, and sport cars built for fun need a manual.
    I btw own the „standard“ 35i in dark blue with beige seats, wood trim AND of course a manual. I would like to have the 12% more power of the iS engine, but not at the cost of the manual transmission.

    • @frankdaelemans4488
      @frankdaelemans4488 Před 4 lety

      Depends. If you have a Z4 with the M-Sport package the suspension setup is 10 mm lower and stiffer. Non-M-Sport is less stiff. It also depends on the size of your rims: standard 17" is less harsh than optional 18" (standard on M-Sport) or optional 19". Thirdly it depends on the tires: runflats give you a harsher ride than regular tires because of the stiff sidewalls. Personally I drive a 20i M-Sport with optional 19" rims and runflats and I don't find the ride overly harsh, but that is of course personal perception. If you're in the market: best to take a couple of different setups for a test drive if you can.

    If you don't know who Cumberford is, look him up, but let's just say he is The Authority on automotive design. The article is now on the Motor Trend website since, alas, Automobile Magazine is no more and their archives were acquired by Motor Trend. Cumberford's review expertly lays out everything I think makes the E89 special and timeless and includes car designer insights that I couldn't describe or articulate before, but could "feel" just by looking at it. This review explains in a user-friendly way why the E89 is such a compelling design.
