Phil is presenting to us for Christmas today
a British number one hit from 1988.
"Mistletoe and Wine" was written by Jeremy Paul, Leslie Stewart and Keith Strachan and premiered in 1976 as part of the musical „Scraps“ (later renamed "The Little Matchgirl") at the Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond, London. This song was then sung by former model Twiggy in the 1986 British television Christmas musical "The Little Match Girl", which was based on the story of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.
The show's producer thought the song would be ideal for Cliff. Cliff loved the song, but wanted to make a few lyrical changes to give the song a more religious message and adapt it to his Christmas release. Leslie was initially horrified at the idea of Cliff recording the song and losing the advantage that the original context provided, but eventually agreed. Richard's version of the song was also used in a British information film about drink driving. The film was part of the "Drinking And Driving Wrecks Lives" campaign, where films were shown during the commercial breaks at Christmas time.
It is Richard's ninety-ninth single. It became his twelfth UK number one single, spending four weeks at the top in December 1988, selling 750,000 copies. In the short six weeks since its release, it became the best-selling single of 1988.
At the same time it spent four weeks at the top of the Irish Singles Chart.
In December 2007, the single re-entered the UK Singles Chart due to downloads, peaking at number 68.
One of the record-breaking statistics often cited about Richard is his achievement of number one hit singles in five consecutive decades.
