- Let's once and for all figure out the difference between Urban Planning and Urban Design. It's more complicated than you might think. Urban Planning and Urban Design are often conflated and colloquially used as synonyms. On top of that, the terms city planning, town planning, community planning, regional planning, rural planning, and even spatial planning cause tons of confusion.

This was an excellent short summary, I liked it! Would also watch a longer one, if you made it. I've sometimes felt lost in a degree which has tried to cover both (and not got into great deal for either discipline). My urban design skills are very basic but I still like to dabble in it.

I often have to explain this to people interested in understanding how the built environment in a governed area “works”. Another point I use is that UDs are the more “visionary” & “creative” ones that are using “design thinking” principles to direct the outcome while UPs are primarily policy oriented, trying to narrate & codify the design & vision of the UDs.
I will use the idea that we’re building a complex crown: the UDs, create the vision and design, the UPs create the instructions & requirements, the engineers figure out how to make it safe & legal while the architects create the jewels (often trying to make theirs the “crown jewel”).
The vent diagram has much overlap while the flow of process is very fluid & dynamic depending on project, scope & needs. The worst thing most municipalities do though is to eliminate the UDs from the process, favoring a default design-by-engineer(ing), that uses a very different method & way of thinking. We ignore the envisioning and creative processes to our peril (literally).

I always thought that urban planning was the same as urban design but I guess not
Whats the number 1 textbook for Urban Design?
If you are looking for a straight up textbook it might just be "Urban Design" by Christa Reicher. If you are looking for a great classic to get started I recommend "Cities for People" by Jan Gehl.

Not True, urban planners, automatically learn, urban design. According to the crediting body, urban design has to be taught within Urban planning curriculum.
