One of the most beautiful villages in Spain
If there is one element that characterizes Setenil de las Bodegas, it is undoubtedly the urban fabric, a white farmhouse literally embedded in the Guadalporcún River canyon, the true architect of Setenil de las Bodegas.
On the northern limit of the province of Cádiz, on the route of the White Villages, Setenil de las Bodegas leaves no one indifferent, due to the importance of its artistic heritage, the rustic beauty of its popular architecture, and above all, its uniqueness. of its cave streets. Always parallel to the river, Cuevas del Sol and its sister the Cuevas de la Sombra, Jabonería and Cabrerizas (scenes of adventures of real and fictional bandits), Calcetas, Calañas and Herrería, one of the most beautiful streets in Andalusia, as defined by some writer.
These streets define the troglodytic habitat of a town that makes the white of its facades and the ocher of the stone its hallmarks.
Because the streets and caves of Setenil have been living stone, an open-air geology lesson but also a roof and home since prehistoric times, humanized rock where soot stains from chimneys and flues and the traces of lime from its ancient inhabitants still persist.
Walking through these streets-cave under these ancestral stones is a sensation that takes us into an unreal world halfway between mineral chemistry and romantic literature, because only in Setenil de las Bodegas can you walk in the rain without getting wet, or drenched in filtered water when it hasn't rained for days.
Nothing like this poem by Gerardo Diego to describe this strange relationship:
"Setenil de las Bodegas, where the sky is rock, and the silence of a pickaxe dream”
Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra streets
These are two of the most typical streets of Setenil. Cuevas del Sol street, open to the south, is the one that receives the most light on the façades of its cave houses, built on natural cavities used as homes under the rocks of the canyon. Cuevas de la Sombra street, for its part, offers a very different picture, in which the sky is replaced by the rock suspended between the two rows of whitewashed facades that flank it. Both maintain an interior microclimate that makes them warm during the cold winter and cool during the festival season.
All light under the stone, the most tourist street. Here there are numerous bars and restaurants, where you can taste the succulent cuisine of Setenil in a most picturesque environment.
Spectacular street where an impressive roof of natural limestone submerges us in a tunnel that shelters houses and lively tapas bars.
Setenil de las Bodegas is a Spanish municipality in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia. Its urban framework has been declared a Historic Site, whose center is embedded in the pit formed by the Trejo River as it passes through the city. It forms part of the route of the white villages, and is connected to the Bobadilla-Algeciras railway line through the Setenil station. It is located at an altitude of 640 meters and is 157 kilometers from the provincial capital, Cádiz. In 2018 it had 2732 inhabitants
Objects have been found in the local caves that show that they were inhabited 5000 years ago

Esa roca es parte de la montaña, no creo que se mantenga suspendida en el aire o lo aguante una cuerda desgastada por los tanto aguantar aguanta, sino ahí no habría ni casas ni restaurantes, y ahí les viene muy bien porque las cuevas son muy frescas y les protege de la calor extrema en verano del lugar porque es en Andalucia 😉
Si es verdad , se vive muy bien , no hace falta aire acondicionado 🤗🤗
