  • we think we have all found it - the perfect personal style. surrounded by all trends from quiet luxury to gorpcore, how much can we really build up our own personal style without being affected? Being influenced is natural and not inevitably bad. but how do we differentiate our very own personal interests from the culturally valued aesthetics?
Do you think you have managed to find and reflect your personal style? Let me know below, I am still fighting..against too much minimalism.

I'm in my 50's and have learnt what I like by now. Clean, minimal, subdued. Most of it black, but also cream and navy and occasionally something light blue. Lots of Jil Sander, some Prada and Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme. I wore YYPH almost exclusively for 10 years, but I picked the more (sometimes deceptively) simple pieces.
Someone told me that I dress like an architect, and I can see that. Someone vaguely artsy in a lucrative business. 😂

My friends call my style "Posh Goth" all black, all the time. 80's Peter Murphy is my role model. Rick Owens is my spirit animal but I only rock the boots and jackets mixed with Yohji, Commes, Dsquarded2, Margiela, Prada, Tom Ford's Gucci, Demeulemeester, etc. I go for a lean and slick aesthetic without going too far. Sinister but not evil.

You're so smart it's amazing. Always love the way you're pushing everyone to discover their own style and personality. A year ago, I was at a painting conference by Gérard Garouste, where he said that style is about digging lower in yourself, not reaching for something better than you. I always remember that quote when I listen to you, so I'm just happy I didn't recognise myself in any of these styles haha

Style is so hard describe. Good style comes in many forms but has to be unexpected and it has to be worn with confidence. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing someone wearing a crazy outfit but loving it and exuding confidence. In the 80s and 90s I lived in Manhattan and was influenced by a few things:
Isabella Rossellini and… window shopping in SoHo at Miyake, Yamamoto, Morgane Le Fay, Varda, Agnes B., Tootsie Plohound and… my mother’s classic style.
Those things have stayed with me for 35 years and, as an artist, my own sensibility is still rooted in that feel. To me, “feel” is more important than style-because it includes how I feel as a woman. It’s never just about the clothes.

My core style is basically a balancing act between "practical" and "alternative." More than half of my wardrobe is black, and more than half of the rest of it is grey. As much as I have a deep appreciation for more avant-garde or sophisticated fashion (and I try to integrate elements of that in some of my silhouettes and layering choices, for example), ultimately at heart I am very much a band shirt, black jeans, combat boots type of person. I guess the third word I would use to describe my style is "broke" 🤣 I do my best to spend wisely, buy what I can secondhand and look for the highest quality I can afford, but my options are more limited in that respect.

That's a good video. All of those styles can look great or.... they can look crappy. It depends on the pieces and the styling. Your lifestyle, the place you live, your age, your income - all play a huge part of your personal style. I'm physically active, I'm an artist, and I live in the suburbs of Los Angeles. My style is a bit masculine, artistic and with an emphasis on high quality fabrics..... but usually I'm in my studio in paint-splattered cotton joggers, a t-shirt, and an apron!

I live in Miami and the style around here is tight bandage dresses and asses hanging out of shorts so I don't know hahaha I liked the video, I think it's interesting to see what YOU see around you and that's really fascinating because I really think that where you live makes a huge difference. I think I agree with you that there's a lot of just "normal" clothes and people dress kind of the same. I feel like I just see so many monochrome, plain styles and it makes me feel like we're all trying to blend in together for some reason. It's a little too warm here to get creative, there's only so many ideas you can have in your closet when your climate is 30C+ for more than 9 months a year but that's a whole separate (personal) issue.

Bone dry humor-100%. Tuba is fantastically entertaining, in every video, even if that’s not necessary to her subject. It then makes her “lessons” (or implicit Socratic questioning) all the more memorable. After each of her “dead-pan funny” expressions, she doesn’t miss a beat; just continues. It seems to come naturally to her (not pre-planned or ‘excessively’ mapped out in advance, which adds to how stunningly amusing Tuba is). I admit (just myself) to not wanting to bother to make much effort at all (only sometimes, not commonly). That does SAY something to others who may see me…. The more I recognize this the more I do want “to bother” (to make some effort, even if only going to a tried and true “uniform” that jibes with my values). Particularly important for someone who like me seeks to convey self-respect and respect for others at all times (even when they do not evince much reason to respect them other than their being human). Cheers.

that's a good one! my personal style could be described as eclectic, but also smart + fun. i feel like i'm not in my final phase of development, but i've already found a path and don't struggle every day when trying to put something on. due to the industry i work in, i have to be "at least a bit" elegant, but classic menswear always bores me, so i experiment with things like engineered garments, sage de cret, and issey miyake to spice things up. comfort is a must for me. I tend to avoid the seriousness of black in my wardrobe. I love playing with textures, bold patterns, and vibrant colors. my boyfriend often jokingly says that I have the style of a rich, well-fed, and tipsy lesbian in her 50s (and I am a 25yr old man), I can't help but think there might be some truth to it! 💩

I first thought when you mentioned the ethereal style it will be this fairy angel otherworldly style with feathers idk lol, but then bam - direct cut to Lemaire and I bursted out laughing and felt so read. It describes my own style in a lot of ways.
My mood for dressing day to day mainly comes down to two things, do I want to look like a mermaid who’s long lived on land and has assimilated with human beings or a friendly ghost that has a floaty airy vibe to them.
Some say dress as if your ghost will wear the clothes you wore on the day you died and the ethereal style is something that I do feel can become a perfect ghost outfit of todays time 🥰

I’m genuinely so honoured to be compared to a freshly washed cow 🥺
I like this first style because it’s easy to put together and because I don’t want my clothes to say very much. I have a habit of making weird first impressions just by accident and bad timing so I don’t need my clothes making it worse 😂 And I much prefer to speak for myself. The other part of my style is things I found secondhand that I liked. Or some things I just found. This part is eclectic (there’s probably a common thread but I haven’t identified it) so if the main part of my style is basic I can just add in what I find without it clashing! I’d call it basic plus?? Plus what idk though, I feel like a magpie just finding shiny things I like that I add to my outfits or put on my windowsill. I still blend in overall but there’s often a less standard piece or detail

What troubles me is that my friends often say I wear too much black or too many skirts, but they never ask me why. I think if you want to get to know someone, you should ask them why they're wearing something. You should ask them why about everything in fact, why do you read that book, why do you like this restaurant? Okay maybe you're right about the ethereal people, because I go for ethereal, minimal and academic looks and I am exactly how you described.

    • @Kris7245
      @Kris7245 Před 4 měsíci

I always want to know why everyone does what they do. The weird thing to me is that a lot of people don’t know why. They just do what everyone else does. But they don’t know what they want. I dress boring but if someone actually asked me why it would excite me because I can tell you instantly about all the clothes I want to find but that don’t exist. I’d be able to paint a clear picture of what I want to wear but can’t find anywhere! And then you’d know who I am. But nobody ever asks so nobody will know my style because it only exists in my imagination.

Fashion can (doesn’t have to) signal how we treat others… It is not superficial. As you often note (and it’s well worth repeating it in case viewers have not seen earlier videos) fashion is not only important to how we feel whether we see another human that particular day, it strongly communicates to what others then impute immediately about us (and/or to us) about our values, and thus how we may treat others (in all walks of life) whom we encounter.

Personal favourites are Leon Emmanuel Blanck, Boris Bidjan Saberi, K'ang, M.A+, Yohji, Rick, Peter Do, Guidi, Jil Sander, Chin Teo, Layer-0, Taichi Murakami, Ann D, Dries V, Y Studio and Detail Therapy (I own a great hat from them I never wear cause I despise hats lol). Not all are small obviously and most are well known, but that isn't the point of my comment even.
As I have the above mentioned Designers near and dear to my heart, I got caught off guard by the just latest Lemaire show. They really made some coats and shirts that I enjoy heavily, and I felt called out in this video, but I perhaps it just reminded me of the more modest/classical Yohji Pieces that I adore. I am afflicted with "multiple-personality-wardrobes syndrome" - I have a 40s/50s wardrobe, a corporate goth wardrobe, a 60s/70s groupie wardrobe, a rock chick wardrobe and a dark academia wardrobe - and it depends how I feel when I wake up in the morning as to who I feel I am that day. It's exhausting having so many 'aesthetics' but I'd honestly be lost without the choice. Being autistic means I lack the ability to mould them all into one unique aesthetic, so everything I'm wearing has to match one aesthetic at a time. Not sure if that's usual or not.

Neutral. As I age, I aim for classic simplicity. I want pieces that all go with each other. Accessories, on the other hand, should say, "hehlowwwww".

In terms of cut, I would say I fall in with the ethereal, but not material. (Would love to, but got a price tag on em, and I like to have variety 😄)
I like a contrast in an outfit. And a small pop/an accent color
    Not too big not tight.

Love your thoughtful commentary, Tuba! But what about the quintessential LA/California style girl--brands like Doen, Ozma and Christy Dawn have their own little universe aesthetic. Would love to know your thoughts on this style/vibe!! It's like fancy hippie/cool mom with orange trees in the backyard etc etc.
Also I'd love your take on what you would wear if you were a mom to a toddler (as I am, but also saw other few commenters here like me). It's a CHALLENGE. It has to be supremely comfortable (since it's a very physically demanding job), not a big deal if it gets paint/food/etc all over it....what in the world. Please help hahahah

Hi Tuba! One thing I always notice is that people tend to stick with a style that reminds them of a certain era that they were happy/felt good or something. Sometimes i see women with certain hairstyles from the 80s, or 90s, also men when they dont want to become adults, so they still wear something baggy and a big t-shirt with an image, makes me wonder all the time, it seems that nothing else good happened in their lives, you know? its like grabbing an old image of you, like time stood still. In my 20s i went crazy with the whole Chloe era, Stella & Phoebe, and then early 30s I went sluttier, lots of lycra dresses, tight fitted, something about my sexuality that uprised!, now Im 42 and I can say THANK GOD i dont wear any of that anymore, im usually into minimalist, not so serious (like the type you mentioned), a colorful minimal...and a fun shoe or bag, I prefer the shape to be clean, layered and always 3 or 4 colours (not bright ones!). And also I have a rule: never a black thing, i hate black !.
I can say im in a very calm stage in my life, and I really can see myself growing through my styles over the years. Big fan of your vids!

I loved this video, i can totally relate to the feeling like something’s off either your outfit just because it’s not your style. It happens to me a lot 😂 I tend to experiment, and even tho the outfit might be nice or even great it’s just…not…right. I think someone’s style you can really see in their attitude. I could see 100s of the same outfit but only a few people really stand out in it because it’s their thing and they own it. Dunno if it makes sense.
I would say my style is like street punk with a touch of avant garde. I can’t choose between my skate jeans and my vivienne westwood dress. I would wear both if that dress wasn’t so tight haha. I guess… i’m too ecclectic to really define 😅 or maybe i’m still building my style idk. Also I live in the netherlands… wind and rain means everyone need some level of techwear to survive here 😅

It's less here about specific brands, and more how to differentiate myself from what is commonly associated with Goth Rock. For context, I've started opening up about being influenced by Goth Rock and Japanese Progressive Metal. The former style is commonly associated with all black, but there are other darker colors that also exist. And some colors you have to get by mixing dyes, and even then it's mostly an approximation. ( I'm not sure how you'd get Earthy red with synthetic dyes. )

The key here is ;people following a formula’. I am a Gen Xer and grew up combining home are clothes for the street punk style with thrift shop finds, mixing it up, Granola hippies who entered the film business and made money. I love quality and black and bright colours and ….a little bit of everything except platforms and logos and cheap fabrics and fast fashion and anyone who ascribes to a formula,

May I ask what’s your background education-wise? I assume you studied fashion but what exactly, I’m curious. I love how you nonchalantly talk about things that you have knowledge about and your use of sarcasm to spice it up.
Personally I’ve always worn an old clothing everywhere I could find them - grandma, mom, my aunts’ because I love things that have a soul - you can see they’ve been trough something. New clothes especially when I was younger was looking too cheap in every sense.
I’m very much into layers, “big” silhouette, but I love to spice it up with crazy hair-do, jewelry and shoes. Also I love spaces in between so nothing too girly also nothing too masculine. Clothing in my opinion can be used as a shield and also if you’re not in a right clothes you can get the feeling of being exposed or vulnerable. When I feel powerful, comfortable and my body can move freely, I know I have choose well my clothes and that’s basically my style.

Tuba, I normally like your perspective on fashion and your dissection of trends and aesthetic codes. In this post I find you to be snobbish and close-minded. I am a monochromatic girl but I am also the free girl who dresses as she wants on a whim. I have a wardrobe yes, but I often add elements that surprise and offset. You cannot put people in boxes. This seems to be the theme of this post. If I am incorrect let me know. That said I am content in my sometimes expensive sometimes discounted gray, navy and black cashmere sweaters. I purchased the Margiela hot pants you purchased off of YOOX and pair them with a grey cashmere sweater and my short Bottega tire boots. Thank you for that suggestion. That said, however, this post does not elevate your viewers but rather leaves them questioning how cool they are in the context of your “boxes”.

I respect the specific tastes and wanting to be unique of the archive person, but let’s be real it’s about flexing how much money you have as well. These people aren’t wearing one of a kind or custom made stuff because then, who would recognise how rare it is and how much it cost?

Ethereal is probably the closest of these to my style, but I also make a lot of my own clothes. The hiker fashion kinda bothers me because I actually hike a lot and I don’t get when people buy technical gear to only wear a few times for instagram. Those clothes are not at all biodegradable and use intense chemical processes to manufacture to high quality. It’s so unsustainable to own multiple pieces especially if they don’t get used.

I usually don’t have issues with picking up my outfit, but at the same time it’s hard to say I have a defined style, and I have an urge to change the vibe about every 2 years 😅
But there are things that don’t change: comfortable materials, classy cuts and colors+prints+sparkle. I recently bought some black clothes to add seriousness to my overall bright outfits 😁
My current “uniform” is turtle neck + wide trousers + cardigan (sometimes in the same color to look more sophisticated).
So I guess 3 words are: comfortable , classy and bright

I'm almost 60, my style is "muted palette, quality construction, nothing unnecessary". I prefer black, gray, and dark blue. Shoes and boots in brown and black that must be Goodyear welted (no cemented construction). Trainers in grays and white. Cotton, wool, selvedge denim, cashmere, alpaca, and leather (top or full grain without coatings and corrected grain). If there are buttons on the sleeves, then there better be functioning button holes. Clothes should fit my body, not sleeves that are too long, shirts that are baggy, or anything that doesn't fit my shoulders, chest, and waist. Plus, it absolutely has to look cool!

What about the referencing/channelling aesthetic, you know, when people wear items of clothing that reference an era, say the 70s (not head to toe of course) or channel a certain character. It can involve buying a piece of clothing or jewellery because it reminds you of something you like. Someone I know wore a red riding hood style cape with floppy bunny ears to work one day. I guess she was channelling fairytales. It's a fun and very postmodern aesthetic I think.

The thing that creeps me is the type of people who want to wear “quiet luxury” trend that they can’t afford in reality end up looking (to me ) like the “talented Mr. Ripley” bunch. Like “I want to look rich, but without being accused of bad taste”. It ok to look poor 👍 just tidy and a bit of charisma ☺️
