    Finally someone who talks about shaping, my biggest dream is to shape and glass my own surfboard!

      That’s awesome! Your wood and metal working skills should translate well into shaping. The biggest difference is going to be how gentle you will need to be. With foam you don’t need to put any weight into your tools, you basically float the planer and only use the weight of the other tools to do the work. Good luck!

    thanks for the video. super helpful. i have a question about the thickness of the nose and tail after establishing the rocker and before concave or rails. how thick do you leave them before the next step? thanks.

    Nice Video!
    I‘ve got a question. When you blend your noserocker on top of the board, didn‘t you create a kink of the rockerline? Because when you don‘t cut down the center of your blank and only the top part of the nose you will get a buckle, won‘t you?
    Sry for the not perfect english.
    Greetings from swizerland

      Good question! When you feather the planer you can avoid cutting parts of the blank without creating kinks. Think of it like blending with a pencil. You can make dark marks and light marks that fade to nothing. In the video I am blending the center rocker with the nose rocker. That being said i did make some cuts into the center of the board, but not many.
      Thanks again!

    Wouldn't the rocker change when you do the bottom concave? So when you measured the rocker on the original board Wouldn't you have to adjust for the concave to get the rail rocker? I really want to learn to shape boards especially with the prices now $800+ where im at 🤯 when I could make my own for less then $300 maybe even less then $200

    • @zack_flores
      @zack_flores  Před 7 měsíci

      If you need exact measurements you would need to compensate for the concave.

      It's gonna cost you more than $300, my friend. Even if you do all the work yourself, including glassing, sanding, fin boxes, etc, you need to buy the blank, the tools, the fiberglass, resin, boxes, etc, and you will not get it wholesale. Then you'll most likely botch the first shape. If it's passable, you'll most def botch the glassing. You're gonna be into it more than $300, my man. Probably closer to what you'd pay in the shop, except your board won't be as good. If you want to shape your own boards, expect to be in it several grand, and 5-10 boards, until you make something worth surfing. If you want the one off experience, go to a shop that lets you shape, while they teach you, and then they'll glass it for you. If you want to make cheap surfboards for yourself, it's not going to be cheap. I know this because I did it. I've made hundreds of boards, now. It took a LOT of money to get to where I am, and surfboards are not NEARLY expensive enough.

      @jonnyzuma6884 I have all the tools used aside from the modded planer. blanks are less then 200 and enough glass and resin to do a board comes out to roughly 120. I can even get preshaped blanks from a local shaper for 275 but I'd rather learn. Doesnt matter if I fail 1,2,even 5 times I'll just learn 5 ways not to make a board its a long term thing not short term

    At what point during the shaping process do you rub an old potato all over the board? I heard that this was done to help repel water if you get a ding.
