  • From 2020, Bill Whitaker reports on untraceable firearms, called ghost guns, which are handcrafted via legally purchased gun kits.
This week, a new federal regulation took effect that requires the kits to include serial numbers and mandates background checks for people who buy the kits from dealers.

      You were missing out.
"Ghost gun" is a term that conflates stolen guns with serial numbers scratched off, and homemade guns that do not require a serial number together.
The advantage to a home made gun is the fact you don't ask government permission, or add yourself to a government list to own it.
This means things like the hurricane katrina gun confiscation won't happen to you. You can't be targeted by arbitrary government fees for gun ownership like a certain mayor in california wanted to impose. You don't have to ask the government for permission to pass down your guns to your next of kin.
The objective of the government is to be the sole middleman between the people, and firearms. The government does not want ANYONE to have a gun they don't know about in order to impose registries, fees, and confiscation by force.
To accomplish that, they conflate home made guns with stolen guns to make it look like a public safety threat to make their attack on home gun building seem sincere, when in truth, it's just a method to make sure they have that much more control over the people.
Companies like polymer 80, and 80% arms have been making home gun building more accessible, and have been selling kits to do so since ~2016 with the ATF's blessing. It's only NOW it has become a talking point, and a political target as politicians notice people are ignoring their gun rights infringement attempts buy building their own.

That's because what the ATF says is legal / not legal changes with the weather (or should I say climate). Put another way just when you've changed the hem of the skirt the style changes and you have to let it out or take it up again. The reason why most "enthusiasts" don't generally deal with these things is two fold: They're typically not very reliable (and thus not good if/when you'd need to depend on them) and getting much better parts (that may need to be purchased via a FFL) are in some cases less expensive and have manufacturer support. While I support the DIY approach I wouldn't use a fully self built firearm either in competition or especially not as a self-defense piece - the lawyers would go nuts.

@Andy Lovett please use the C.A.R.S. Checklist research method to verify the accuracy & validity of the information you have now and what you gather in the future - especially regarding the U.S. Constitution, and the 2nd Amendment in particular. That Checklist is great because it is so vital & applicable to understanding how we disseminate information in our current U.S. society that it was actually required for the research methodology courses I took. Not only is it a simple & relatively rapid way to make sure your information is factual, but also it was specifically developed for use with information that is found online.
Secondly, to 60 Minutes - beginning at time stamp 8:36 what is your reasoning behind how you define, classify, and separate "terrorism" and "white supremacy"?? They are one and the same - even according to the official statements of the FBI itself. Please consider the fact that doing this does, and further will, reinforce division in our country. You are reinforcing division in this piece by promoting the erroneous stigmas of those who would choose to demonize any particular attack as more egregious than the other and/or any particular perpetrator to be feared more than the other based on these current societal stigmas. That is objectively NOT journalism. That is repeating political talking points as valid, distinct, and factual information - which, by definition, isn't journalism. Your actions in this regard undermine the trustworthiness of this program and your "news" network as a whole. All of the latest polls in the last several years are showing that the level of trust the American populace has in our news media has been continuing to decrease and is now at historic lows. This has been happening continuously for at least the last 20 years. Please be part of the solution to that problem, or division will most certainly rise to levels that are guaranteed to topple democracy and our country in itself. The media's disingenuous coverage of these very important topics is absolutely shameful and is a global embarrassment. Do better.

All guns should be "ghost guns" there is no reason to put a serial number on a 4473 after a background check is done. There is no reason to trace a gun, criminals find guns all the time and just file numbers off if they want. 6:54 for every confiscated gun that sheriff is pointing out there are thousands, possibly millions that will never need to be taken. I love it how 60 Minutes always acts like they're the last one to the party like this is some kind of big news people have been making guns in their garages and in their little metal shops forever the first guns ever made homemade guns they weren't manufactured by Smith & Wesson Smith & Wesson with some guy who was making guns in his garage and then he made a company that's how it starts we are provided the right to defend ourselves and if you can't afford to go down and buy one of the gun shop you're more than welcome to make one in your home if you can do it safely and then you're required to register it if it's a legitimate firearm unless it's black powder I don't think you have to register black powder but if you're going to manufacture some kind of modern semi-automatic firearm and carry it with you and have it in a state you have to have it registered all this modern hubbub with the ghost guns now is because you let criminals get emboldened and acting out against law enforcement if you were to penalize these people properly this stuff wouldn't be happening cuz they would know that they're looking at 20 years if they use this gun and they're going to be prosecuted right now you're giving everybody the revolving door of the legal system under Joe Biden and nobody gives a s*** if they're killing cops or killing your little kid on the way to school because they don't go to jail they get out on halftime and probation

This whole "ghost gun" B S has really taken off in the last couple of years. All a gun is is a pipe.. The term "ghost gun" was defined back in the 1980s when they where trying to ban guns that could pass metal detectors and x-ray machines. The plastic and ceramic guns would pass by the x ray machine a produce a "ghostly" image on the screen, hence the name "ghost gun."
It has always been legal to make your own guns at home. Even if the government doesn't want you to have a gun no one will know you have one until either someone rats on you or you do your evil deed. All a gun is is a pipe. You can go down to the hardware store and buy some plumbing pipe and have yourself a muzzleloader. Phillip Luty proved this back in 1996 with his homemade submachine gun, which he wrote a book about. The point he made was lost on almost anyone, all they did was increase his sentence and make an example out of him. They never thought that gun laws don't work on criminals.
Maybe instead of focusing so much on the tools criminals use to commit their evil deeds maybe reforming our schools and raising our children right would fix the issues we are having with crime and mental illness we are seeing today.
A long time ago this wasn't even an issue people would take their kids to school and they would have a gun rack in the back of their trucks. A father would give his 10 year old son a .22 rifle for his birthday and teach him to shoot and nobody thought otherwise. Most people never thought about gun control as something we really needed to worry about as opposed to just criminals. Now everybody is trying to lock down on guns like the criminal doesn't exist anymore. It doesn't help that they are just letting these people out on no bail laws.

Tupperware was popular in the late 70's through the mid 80's The Glock was developed in the late 70's and introduced to the market in the early 80's - coincidence? I think NOT! When this "story" was published Gaston Glock was 90 years old - some plastics melt at 90 degrees C - coincidence? I think NOT - Gaston isn't a ghost yet (he's 93 as of July) so therefore Glocks cannot be "ghost guns"
All joking aside you're spot on - use "scary" words like "ghost guns", "assault weapon", "Saturday Night Special" (not to be confused with Saturday Night Live) and the public's lack of knowledge about the topic or the mass-confusion coming out of the federal agencies like the ATF and the majority of people just give up on trying to discern the truth...

It is against federal law to maintain a federal gun registry, so the BATF doesn't know how many serial numbered guns or ghost guns anyone has. Maybe, just maybe, if governments didn't use registration as a precursor to confiscation, then registration wouldn't be an issue. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of guns in circulation and only a small percentage is used in crime.
