Repairing a broken cello (part 1)

- In this video I’ll show you what I did to repair a hole and some other cracks in the rib of my sons cello. As you will see I don’t do this for a living by any means however I always think you should try your best. There is no doubt in my mind if I had this repaired professionally it would’ve come out better but I am still proud of how it turned out. I heard a wise man say Once “ obstacles are the things that you see when you take your eyes off your goal”.
I love the knowledge applied and tools that makes everything look so easy and exciting.

Very nice job on this repair. I do this for my living and I was really impressed by your knowledge and attention to detail. Much better repair than some “professional” repairs I’ve seen. And to be honest, I learned a few things and gave me a few ideas on future repairs! So, thank you!

My double bass’s neck is broken along with some open cracks, fallen sound post, and missing bridge piece 😭😢

Thank you very much. I’ve always like to work with my hands and it may be obvious that this is the first time I’ve ever worked on a musical instrument 😂 The funny thing is I just searched around on CZcams. All the other makers out there I think you’re a great influence. I’m always willing to try something new. Adam Savage from MythBusters said many times “failure is always an option.” I think failure is also a great opportunity to learn. And another great influence to me is Dug from SV seeker. @@fieromike1 I'm always amazed by what a luthier will charge for such work; they often make it seem like it take super human capabilities to carry out repairs and that you 'SHOULD NOT TRY THIS AT HOME'...LOLZ. Mike where did you get the 'patch' from? Anywhere in particular I could purchase one?
@@cesarllanos9975 I would agree it is amazing. However I always need to remember that what you are paying for is a person’s experience. I am a contractor by trade. After almost thirty years I kind of know what to expect when I rip your bathroom apart. It wasn’t always like that. The first bathroom I did wasn’t too profitable but I got it done. I am sure that most people could figure it out but I would suggest that they should at least get the advice of a professional. I was ready to fail with this project, and honestly I finished it the way I did because I kind of knew I was in over my head as far as the finishing work went.

...to answer your question. The Veneer that I used to patch the inside was from a scrap of 1/4” luan plywood that I sanded down to about half it’s thickness. After it was glued to the inside of the cello I sanded it down even further.
And yes you should try this at home! How else can we learn? 😉

It seems you used a regular table knife to open the toop piece?😂 or you use something special?
Yes it was just a regular table knife. 😂
