    Someone probably mentioned it but Machiya (the guitar player) is in charge of the mix. He is very modest (but massively skilled) and never pushes his own sound to the front unless it is really what the piece calls for. Sometimes maybe he is too modest.

  • @takecham5155
    @takecham5155 Před 2 lety +76

    Machiya (guitarist) says that the electronic instruments tend to overwhelm the sound of the traditional Japanese instruments, resulting in a poor balance, so he intentionally made the sound softer for the sake of "overall harmony."

    • @RyoMassaki
      @RyoMassaki Před 2 lety +7

      I get that, and they do a great job of keeping an overall harmony, still I'd wish they'd let him and Asa loose once in a while and compose some more songs that are more on the heavy sounding spectrum, like the song "Tsuki ni Sakebu Yoru" for example, where Machiya has a really chunky guitar tone and the bass is (even more) hot and groovy. It demonstrates perfectly that even with more intense Guitar/Bass in the mix, the Shakuhachi and Shamisen have no problems to cut through the sound, only the Koto seems to need some space.

  • @icalumnos2565
    @icalumnos2565 Před 2 lety +89

    Machiya (the guitarist) is not there to be heard or to masterfully shred all the time. He is also one of the main composers, vocal harmonist and makes almost each and every song of the band's arrangement. He has the last word before the recordings go public. Besides, the majority of the instrumets of this band are melodic (koto, shakuhachi, shamisen, Yuko's voice) so he has to be the rythm base of the music in most of the cases. He also is the sound engineer of thr band, so he equalizes himself to be heard more on the background side and even with that, he masterfully shreds 👌🏻

      @page1_cs Před 2 lety +10

      That's what I love about Machiya. He's doesn't over power each member. Love it.

    “Wagakki” is Japanese for “traditional instruments”
    The “lute” thing is a Shamisen.
    The “harp” thing is a Koto.
    The “flute thing” is a shakuhachi.
    The Japanese drums are collectively called “wadaiko”.
    The band was founded by the shigin (classical poetry) singer, SUZUHANA Yuko, who is also a classically trained pianist. She developed the concept of fusing Japanese traditional instruments and musical tropes with modern music.

    This song, performed live, is *outstanding*! It's an all-hands-on-deck attack that gives all of the members a chance to shine. Just excellent! 🤘😎👍

    Do Homura + Akatsukie no Ito if you really want the guitarist prominent in the mix hahaha. That one got me into them.

  • @DrAcula-os1nz
    @DrAcula-os1nz Před 2 lety +9

    Yes, that's right, the guitar is very low in the mix on this version. This version also lacks audience interaction since this concert was during the pandemic and the audience was not allowed to sing along or shout loudly. Everyone had to have a negative test and a mask.
    They were only allowed to let in 5k spectators in a hall that takes 17k The concert was supposed to be Daishinnenkai (New Year's party) 2020 in January but was postponed to August. thus "Manatsu no Daishinnenkai. (Midsummer New Year's Festival).

    sensationell band. they all are masters. guitarist machiya is indeed excellent. and his sago guitar is very beautiful.

  • @RobinC63
    @RobinC63 Před 2 lety +17

    The first “that thing” is a Koto. The Chinese version is Guzheng and the Korean version is a Gayageum. The second “that thing” banjo” sounding instrument is the Shamisen.
    This band is in my top 5 that I want to see.
    You are completely correct about the mix in my honest opinion.

    • @ChrisPage68
      @ChrisPage68 Před 2 lety +3

      I think the 🎸 would drown out the Shamisen.

    Seamlessly blending the traditional and modern as only the Japanese can. The shakuhachi player is definitely channeling Ian Anderson. PS If you don't think a flute has a place in a rock band, check out Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson).

  • @ahodori2233
    @ahodori2233 Před 2 lety +10

    WagakkiBand was started from Yuko Suzuhana's desire to "disseminate Japanese classical art with a pop image to the world."
    This concert was specially permitted by the government to be used as a reference for the operation of events such as concerts and watching sports under the pandemic.
    There is one caveat. WGB's contract with Avex ended in June 2019, and they signed a global contract with Universal Music. Since then, Avex-owned music videos other than live footage have been reliably blocked if used as is.

    Wolfpack's here and everywhere. Awesome and great review of yours. I understand your complain over guitar in the mixing but they have a reason. Since Japanese traditional string instruments, Shamisen and Koto here, have rather whisperous than modern electric instruments, and have shorter sustain, they are trying to find the best balance somewhere.
    My friend Hiawatha explains about Japanese instruments down below, and I'll give a little supplement here, I'm an old Japanese man and know a little about it. The Shamisen that Beni is playing here is not a regular shamisen. This kind is called a "futo-zao (fat-rod) shamisen" having a thicker neck and a robust body. The play style is called Tsugaru Shamisen or Jongara Shamisen. It is faster, louder, wilder than regular play style of shamisen. A futo-zao shamisen built for playing Tsugaru Shamisen is also called as a Tsugaru Shamisen recently. Tsugaru is a region at the tip of the main island of Japan, and Tsugaru Shamisen was boorn and developed there by traveling blind musicians.
    As a Japanese myself, I strongly recommend you to try following numbers of Wagakki Band.
    Kyouka Suigetsu + Tsuki Ni Sakebu Yoru is a perfect catalogue of WB with smoking solo of every member and a perfect fusion of heavy metal and Japanese traditional music. czcams.com/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/video.html
    Synchronicity 2022 version. A fusion of jazz and Japanese traditional music. You'll know how really talented both Yuko the singer and the guitarist Machiya are. czcams.com/video/8SNV8s8FJBk/video.html

    The Wagakki Band is much like Led Zeppelin in that no two performances of the same song is the same as the last. They play around with the music and how the musicians get their time in the spotlight. The differences might be subtle, but they are there such as Machiya's soft guitar in this version.
    Because of Covid, the audience was not allowed to react as they normally would have such as when the five artists gathered in front, when they raised they hands, the crowd would have shouted out 1,2,3, instead of the band doing it. Interesting effect when you have as many as 16K people shouting out during the song in time with the musicians , such as when they did this song during the concert featuring Amy Lee.
    Also, this song is normally the concert final song of the night.

    Forget the name of the flute. But the banjo sounding instrument is a shamisen. The harp sounding instrument is a koto. An interesting thing about the koto is all the strings are the same gauge. All the tuning is done with the little pegs.
