      The complexity of Miles’ relationship with Gwen. It’s a long-distance friendship that obviously wants to be more, and they both know it, but neither knows how to express that want, and there are myriad things in the way of them realizing that next step.
      She enjoys his company and is more comfortable with him than anyone else in her life, and he’s just as smitten but with more optimism about their chances since he doesn’t know Gwen Stacy’s tragic history with Spider-Man. To borrow from Shakespeare, Gwen sees their relationship as Romeo and Juliet, whereas Miles sees them more as Beatrice and Benedick from “Much Ado About Nothing.” They work almost perfectly in concert with each other as they swing through the city and later in Mumbattan when shit goes sideways, after which she tells him she’s always thought he was amazing, and it’s the understated delivery by Hailee Steinfeld that really sells Gwen’s feelings for Miles more than anything else in movie. If the self-loathing opening narration, the bear hug she gives him upon reuniting, and all the little physical touches she makes weren’t enough, that line should leave no doubt.
      And even after the betrayal mentioned in the opening narration, when he has every reason to cut her off, I still believe Miles loves her enough to forgive her, because I’m a hopeless romantic like that.

      I watched the movie a second time with a friend of mine a couple weeks ago. I already knew she was gonna move, so this was our last full in person experience with each other. For that reason, the Miles and Gwen scene where they are just happy to see each other again after a year is really heartwarming, and it gives me hope for the future of the friendship. (That and bro Miles and Gwen are so cute together like come on now😭)

  • @UltimateTS64
    @UltimateTS64 Před rokem +37

    The theme that goes through both movies that resonates with me the most is a strained relationship with your father. My dad reminds me of Jeff in a lot of ways, and the way we see him stuggle to connect with Miles at the beginning of the first movie is almost the exact relationship my dad and I have. This is reinforced in the second movie by Miles only being able to really talk to his dad with the mask on as it feels like I almost have to put one on, reinforced even more through Gwen's relationship with her dad. There's honestly a lot of relatable aspects and it's amazing to see how layered it gets the deeper you look.

    • @TitleInProgress
      @TitleInProgress  Před rokem +2

      Absolutely! It’s cool to hear your perspective because I hadn’t thought all that much about that side of these movies (the mask thing in particular is a really cool parallel I hadn’t noticed until your comment) and it’s cool that that aspect resonated with you.

    • @UltimateTS64
      @UltimateTS64 Před rokem +2

      @@TitleInProgress Yeah it hits even closer to home cause Miles is black and I am too, so when I say his dad acts exactly like my dad, I mean that in every sense 😂. My dad is a pastor and it can sometimes be hard to talk to him about normal stuff, unless I "put the mask on" and use his type of talk to help him understand what I'm going through. The mask while Miles talks to his dad helps him to be level with his dad since they're both crime fighters and his dad listens to him then. We can see how this is the symbolism when Gwen gives her speech to her dad about how the mask is her badge and she wants to wear it the way he does, which opens the door to them reconciling from their fall out. It really is a deep symbolism that I'm glad they put words and visuals to, because it's something you never realize other people go through until it's published like that.

      @@UltimateTS64 and when Miles is talking to his dad as Spider-Man his dad actually listens to him because he repeats Miles saying he needs to “spread his wings” near the end of the movie. I thought it was cool that Miles could talk to his dad in that way but this take on the theme is more interesting and makes the movie that much more impressive! Also it’s good that you can communicate with your dad, even if you have to metaphorically put the mask on.

    I saw Across the Spiderverse 5 times in theaters on opening weekend and a total of 8 times so far. Into the Spiderverse has been my favorite movie of all time since December 2018. I completely agree! There are many ways that Across The Spider-Verse matches and even surpasses Into The Spider-Verse in quality (any scene that features Spider-Punk comes to mind), but I don’t think Across was ever going to top Into The Spider-Verse for me, because ITSV is so special to me for so many reasons! Also, I’m not sure anything can top the Leap of Faith scene from ITSV for me, but we’ll have to see what BTSV can do. I agree that both movies are phenomenal, but ITSV was such a surprise and connected with me in ways I didn’t expect that I don’t know if it’ll ever be topped.

      @@Vespyr_ this is probably not what you were wanting to hear but for me it was really practice. If you watch some of my older videos, my voice is very monotone and it feels like I’m reading a script, but after trying it more and getting more comfortable reading from a script, it felt more natural. There are a few things I can recommend you do, like speaking clearly and emphasizing certain words or phrases you want to stick out to the viewer, but the most important thing I’ve learned is to write for how you speak. I don’t have as good of lung capacity as others, so my sentences are generally either shorter or contain commas as natural breaks for breathing. Also, I try to avoid using words and phrases that twist my tongue, which is more of a trial and error thing than anything because I don’t always know what words/phrases I can properly pronounce until I record my script, but it’s easy enough to change in the moment. I hope this helps, and if all else fails, watch some CZcams videos on the subject. I didn’t do that for voicing but CZcams videos have helped me learn and improve on a lot of things.

    I decided to give ITSV a try mid-June. Had a free evening and thought „better than nothing“. And gosh, it was the best movie idea of the year. I was never really into the Spider-Verse. I saw the live action movies, but nothing more.
    Of course one of the goals of the trilogy may be that Miles and Gwen are getting together like in some comics, but wow, I liked that ITSV didn‘t push it that far already, because it made ATSV so much more real. I saw ATSV two times in cinema (which was completely new for me) and enjoyed it every time. And many times more on YT. 🤐
    I will be more detailed on the potential romance between Miles and Gwen. Both are desperately trying to get their grips in their universes, both have their parallels. Also it is visually so stunning. This movie is real, I mean the problems and the acting is completely relatable. Of course there are comic styles and such things, but seeing Gwen struggling with her dad at the beginning and the end, and her tie between the Spider Society and her love (let‘s face it like this) to Miles … it was something you could see in everyones real life.
    ATSV is one of the movies, which are fun to watch during the action scenes, but these „silent“, emotional scenes and dialouges are the basement of the movie. Voice acting is great (Hailee nailed it here), the movements are completely real (I have to point out Gwen during her last talk with her dad at the end - best scene of the whole movie) and the motifs are quite relatable, even for me who is now 32.
    I hope that Gwen and Miles will get a redemption (mostly Gwen as everybody is pulling her down in ATSV) and that BTSV will nail it like ITSV and ATSV. 🙂
    I will watch it a dozen times

    • @TitleInProgress
      @TitleInProgress  Před rokem +1

      Great write up! I agree with everything you said, and I’m glad you gave Into The Spider-Verse a try! The movie really does have a sense of realism that you normally wouldn’t expect from an animated multiverse superhero movie, but the characters and their problems feel real, despite the fantastical world. And yeah, a lot of that is owed to the voice acting (like you said Hailee Steinfeld nailed it), but the writing and animation (especially the character animation which only feels heightened in a way to give more expression, like with the eyes of the mask) help it go a long way. The conversations all feel natural and in-character, and the story itself reflects Miles and Gwen’s internal struggles. Miles wants to be accepted and find a place that understands him (thus the Spider Society) and Gwen wants the same thing, though from a different perspective (with her initially siding with Miguel). I wrote a bit more but at a point I realized I was just restating what your comment already said, so I’ll leave it at that. Amazing movie, I hope and expect BTSV to conclude the story well, and I’ll probably watch all three of these movies many, many more times.

    • @BKTano16
      @BKTano16 Před rokem +1

      @@TitleInProgress Regarding the realism this movie does something what even live action movies are lacking: the pacing and facial expressions.
      Some examples:
      1. Gwen when she is talking to her dad the second time. How she paces through the room and moves her arms etc. (And don't get me started talking about the color scheming here 😂)
      Even in MCU movies I think they would stand still in moments like this.
      2. Her slight expression change when she recruits Peter B. First she looks desperate, and then she slightly moves her head so then she looks demanding for Peters help.
      There are so many other examples, like how she visibly breaks down after Miles told her that she shouldn't have come back at the canon events scene. Or how her voice breaks when she has to reject Miles' approach at the clocktower. You can see that she wants so badly to give in, but then she thinks about all the canon nonsense that Miguel told her.
      I mean, it is not her Spider-Man, because in her universe Gwen (= Peter) already fell for Spider-Man (=Spider-Gwen). So her canon event already happened, but they switched sides. So in fact she only had to think further. But yeah, we are talking about teenagers here, which is why I don't understand the hate she gets. 😅
      Never before I found so many essays or psychological analyses for a movie like ATSV, and this is amazing.
      This shows, that animation doesn't have to be a restriction for a good movie with so many backstories.
      Also one thing I never thought about (until someone made it clear) is that she had to use physical power to lean onto Miles shoulder as they are hanging upside down. So she had to 'get up' to lean on his shoulder.
      Or how touchy she is throughout the movie (her spontaneous hug at the beginning, how she holds his shoulders while talking to Miles' parents, how she pulls him back jealousy when he speaks to Margo. 😅
      So small details, but I wouldn't expect some of these even in live action movies.
      God, I just wanted to write a small comment, but then this happened...I 'hate' it 😂 Unfortunately most of my friends are not really into the Spider-Verse, so I cannot talk to them without getting them bored, because I could talk hours about these aspects of the movie. But even a friend who is not into the topic had a good time watching it (she likes Hobie the most 😂), which is a quite good reception too 😃
      As we will definitely get a Spider-Gwen spin-off, I think she will survive BTSV. Because this spin-off will show the female Spiders, so I don't believe it will set in between ITSV and ATSV. And I heard rumors about a additional TV series. But yeah, they would be stupid not to do more out of these characters. Spider-Gwen is one of the most famous alternate Spiders, so they must do more with her.
      (Sorry for the long comment 😅)

I’m excited at the possibility of spin-offs, and I’m hopeful that 1) they happen and 2) they’re good. I’m especially interested in a Spider-Gwen spin-off (not sure if that’s supposed to be a movie or a show) and I think a story about Gwen (for lack of a better term) finding herself after the events of BTSV has a lot of potential.

      I also hope that she will have her debut in the upcoming Spider-Man 2 game. Not yet as Spider-Gwen, but as Gwen Stacy, building up to Spider-Man 3 with her as Spider, too.
      They would be dumb not to use her fame from the Spider-Verse and as we saw in ATSV and with Miles' ITSV suit in Spider-Man Miles Morales, they are aware of the connection between both worlds. Until then I have to take her character as Fortnite skin (which is apparently very good) 😂

      @@BKTano16 not sure what I think about a Spider-Womans spin-off as opposed to a solo Gwen movie, but if the Spider-Verse team is behind it, it’ll probably be great! I don’t play the Spider-Man PS4/5 games, but I agree that they should probably introduce her as regular Gwen Stacy before giving her spider powers (which I also hope the MCU does with Miles if they ever introduce him, though I would be a little skeptical of that because they would be following up Spider-Verse’s Miles, but I’m sure it could be done). I don’t have a favorite female characters list, but if I did Gwen (especially Spider-Verse Gwen) would definitely be near the top (right now probably my #1 but I’d have to think about it more).

      @@TitleInProgress Okay, went back to the site I watched it on and just realized he did indeed say "halfway through your big speech", so... yeah, guess that's on me. My bad.
      The reason I thought he had already quit was because he said "because I quit", not "because I'm quitting" or something similar.

    I had to cut this vid off as soon as I heard you complain about the ending. I'm so sick and tired of people desperately trying to find some flaw with this brilliant movie. ATSV is a visually stunning and emotionally jarring masterpiece. To try to label it flawed in any way is asinine

    • @TitleInProgress
      @TitleInProgress  Před rokem

      Genuine question, when did I complain about the ending? I actually think the ending was great, and any problems with it being a cliffhanger ending were overruled by the incredible two-parter story it looks to tell, but I could be misremembering the video or it had a line in there that didn’t come across as I’d intended.
