- I was looking for a quick, small turning due to a sore arm. First piece I saw was this little branch section of Cherry Plum. It proved to be the perfect piece for a simple project that would make an easy sell at a craft show, bazaar or as a neat, spur of the moment gift. Also, a great beginner project! Finished with Howard's Feed & Wax.

I appreciate how you note the gouge size and RPM you are using during this process. So many instructional videos forget these small but important details.
Happy to help, Paul, thanks!
Agree. Even just a quick “3/8 bowl gouge here”… and RPMs helps alot. Confirms.
While I appreciate his video don't get sold to idea of running whatever rpm someone else is using. You wanna turn anything at the fastest speed it can safely be done. Which changes with every piece
agreed, that is helpful. I learned to trim tenons from your videos. :)
The way you can tell that someone is good at something, is how easy they make it look. 20 minute project for a master, 20 hour project for me.
Oh, I don't think you can make this last 20 hours even if you tried. LOL! An hour, maybe, for a newby. 😊
I love that the bark reaches all the way to the bottom on this one.
😊
It is alway appreciated when details of size, tools used and lathe speeds given. An experienced woodturner would know these things but the begginer needs all the advice they can get. Thank you.
I'm glad it's helpful, thank you! 😊
You took a piece of wood , that someone else would pick up and throw in the fire and made a beautiful little bowl. The grain really popped out with this project. Thanks Phil. Loving your channel. Super helpful !
Wow, thank you, Jason! 😊
I appreciate how you always stop the lathe regularly so we beginners can see how the wood is shaping up. You have a real gift for teaching this craft.
Thanks a lot, David! 😊
Cute and practical. Fun to watch. Yes, take it for a welcome gift…maybe put something wrapped and sweet inside.
Great idea!! 😊
Dixie cup takes me back to childhood. That's the shape of them boats you used to get banana splits at the tasty freeze in. That's beautiful !
Sounds great! 😊
I was thinking they might have been the little paper cups with paper lids of ice cream we would sometimes have with school lunches. Or maybe they were the tiny drinking cups that you would pull one from a plastic tube next to a drinking fountain or water bottle. Or maybe neither of those. I do know that's a really cute bowl anyone would be very happy to receive as a gift! I hope your arm and hand feel better soon. Don't overwork them! ☺️❤️👍
Yeah, the ice cream ones is what I was thinking of, Robin. I can't remember where they came from. Grocery store? I'm glad you like this, thank you! 😊
What a nice bowl. A small bowl like this seems much more approachable and is something I think I can do rather than trying to tackle something like a big bowl or even a segmented bowl. Thanks Phil. This one inspired me.
Thank you very much, Jason, have fun! 😊
Beautiful little bowl. The cracks add character to the natural edge piece.
Thank you, Jiggsy! Cheers! 😊
I never get tired of watching you turn. You know by looking at your views your a celebrity now! I know you are mine. Great little project for fun. Thank you Phil.
Well, I'm stumped as to what to say, Sylvie. I will say thank you! 😊
I love watching you turn...everything seems to be so easy and always turn out looking so great!
I love reading your comments, Carol, so we're even! 😊 Thank you!
Just the cutest little bowl. I'd invite you to dinner especially if I knew you were giving 1 of your beautiful creations as a thankyou gift. I'd probably even make a homemade pie. Hope your arm doesn't give you too many fits. I'm getting a total hip replacement June 28th and I've been in extreme pain for almost a year.On pain meds some but your videos help take my mind off of me. Thankyou My Dad always said that getting old isn't for sissies. Lol
Your dad was right, Glenda! Still, I'll take a little pain with my aging rather than the alternative. I wish for you an easy surgery and a speedy recovery. Still lots to do! 😊
20 minute bowl. I have had a lot of 20 minute jobs that I knocked out in one or two hours during my life. I sure do enjoy your projects and videos.
Haha, I know what you mean, Ray! Thank you for watching! 😊
No matter the size, your work is without equal. Job well done. Hope the arm continues to improve
Thank you so much, Stephen! 😊
Thanks Phil. Love the the way it turned out. Might try to do one myself this weekend. 🙏 praying for your healing.
Dixie cups were small paper cups
They stacked into each other and in a dispenser. Remember having them at grandma's and in the camper.
Sounds great, Bunny, good luck with yours! 😊
Very cute, love the live edge! Thanks for entertaining us even with a bum arm☺
Thank you, Lili, my pleasure! 😊
Very nice little bowl! Thanks for sharing! Prayers that you get better soon! Take care and GOD BLESS!
Thank you very much, Stephen! 😊
You can subscribe without fear of being happy, as this work of art is much more than a dixie cup. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
Ice cream? Wow, that was a ways ago. I remember Dixie cups as little paper cups for drinking out of for sanitary reasons. And what a pretty little bowl! If someone handed me one of these, I'd be over the moon!
Haha, yeah, you gotta be old to remember the ice cream cups and the girl group, Nan! 😊
When you showed the piece of wood that you were using I didn’t expect it to turn out like that. Amazing!
Cool, thanks, George!
Хорошая работа👍
😃
Wood turning makes for a good rehab activity, I found it a great way to spend my time recovering from heart bypass surgery.
Oh, I would not want to find that out first hand! 😊
Worst part was the helicopter flight when a Dr asked if I wanted a priest to go with me!
@@mgkipper Oops!
Another beautiful piece, Uncle Phil. I love how you left the majority of the bark intact, along the sides of the bowl. Definitely illustrates the character of the piece ❣️✌️
I appreciate that, Dwayne!
This is just the thing I love to turn, quick, easy and pleasing to the eye, and because I can't get much wood at the moment without stealing it, just love your channel Phil, it gives me confidence to just give it a go and it doesn't have to be perfect to be attractive 👍👍👍. Take care and be safe.
Right on, Garry! Thank you! 😊
"The Dixie Cups" haha!
I dig your humor! Part of why you're my favorite CZcams wood turner!
Cool, thank you, Tommy! 😊
I like the cracks too Phil gives that peace some character another fantastic turning the finish brings out the grain beautiful
Cool, thank you, Charles! 😊
Nice job, very cute and love the live edge on the sides. - Dixie Cups were single serving ice cream with a cardboard pull tab lid - we usually ate it with a flat wooden spoon. Nice job on the bowl, thanks for sharing
You are one of the very few to know that, Selina! 😊
Dixie cup in Canada is a small plastic dish of ice cream covered with a thin piece of cardboard usually has a little flat piece of wood shaped like a spoon to eat it with. This little bowel looks like you could put a small banana split in it. Love the shape and the bark and the beautiful cracks. Beautiful piece Phil
Yes! That's the kind of dixie cup I was talking about, Wade. I haven't seen them in years but we always had them as kids. Thank you for watching and commenting! 😊
Good looking bowl
Thanks, Bobby! 😊
Absolutely stunning Mr. Phil awesome job
Thank you, Donald! Cheers! 😊
It's just like doodling with an eraser, ain't it? 😁 Beautiful wood and a very pleasing shape, as always. Nicely turned. 👍
Good description, Dave! So easy, just what I needed! Thanks, buddy! 😊
That small bowl is adorable, Phil. I like what the HF&W did to it as well. Nice work. 👍👍👍🙂🙂
Right on, thank you! 😊

Never in a million years would I believe I would enjoy wood turning. I'm amazed how you take an ugly chunk of wood and turn it into something so beautiful.
Now you need to give it a try, Karen! 😊
I would so put a live plant in it. Gorgeous 💖
Great idea!! 😊
Lovely piece Phil. Plenty more inspiration to raid the fire log pile. Shows that we don’t need to be so worried about sawing off those cracked ends when they can add so much character. Dixie cups yet to reach Scotland and pleased to say that the present weather would be melting that ice cream. Take care.
Cool, enjoy your log pile perusal, Kevin! Thank you!
I remember the Dixie Chicks. Never hear of a group called the Dixie Cups. There was a brand of paper ware called Dixie and just an empty paper cup was referred to as a Dixie cup. I think you might be right that you could also buy ice cream in a cup that we called a Dixie cup too.
PS: I enjoy your turnings.
The Dixie Chicks are a relatively recent country group, as you know, Robert. The Dixie Cups were a girl group from the 60's. Their big hit was Chapel of Love. czcams.com/video/h6axevxj5x0/video.html You are correct about the ice cream Dixie cup. I'm so glad you take your time to watch and comment on my videos, thank you very much! 😊
Looking good Phil 👍👌. I keep you in my prayers 🙏.
Thank you, Michael! 😊
My wife enjoys watching your videos with me. She says it's always an adventure. She says she feels like she's known you for years. 😂
Well, how cool is that! I love it when couples watch together, thank you for telling me, Baydon! 😊
I think one of the best things I’ve learned from you is the use of the sand-o-flex. I purchased mine this past Christmas. Very nice. I hope your arm improves soon, Phil.
Glad it was helpful! I often say, I would not turn the pieces I do if I didn't have the Sand O Flex. The arm is getting better, thank you, Jay!
I had not heard of this sanding tool until tonight and just looked around online where I can buy one locally.. I can't tell if you're using the slashed or solid strips in your Sand O Flex, would you share?
@@christophersmith9275 I use the slashed refills 99% of the time, Christopher.
lol Phil Dixie cups were disposable paper cups . alot of people use to keep them in there bathrooms to rinse there mouth out after brushing there teeth . or for small sample cups for treats at the ice cream shop or a craft sale . they were great for little ones to give drinks in cause they were small and easy for them to hold . cute little bowl be great for a end stand to through change in or maybe a candle .
Yeah, I like the candle idea, Dark, thank you! 😊
Great little apéro bowl to hold peanuts or pistachios or crisps or olives or small cubes of parmigiano! Love the grain of the wood, nicely done, Phil 👌🏻 Thank you!
I so glad you did this bowl out of a smallish limb. We ha to cut off some limbs from a pen oak trees and I knew that I wanted to do something with them rather than just burn them in the fireplace. 😊
Perfect, Diane! 😊
Howdy. Phil, Watching an old one Just to let you know you are in my prayers and I hope you feel better soon. We miss you but you get better.
Thanks, Bob, I'm workin' on it! 😊
As a child we used to get small cups of ice cream with a lid. We called them Dixie Cups!
Yes, that's what I was referring to, John, just not sure where they came from. Grocery store?
We got them from the ice cream stand! They were half chocolate and half vanilla, and came with a little wooden spoon to eat it. And sometimes there would be a picture on the under side of the lid! They held about 4 ounces, just right for a little kid!
Now they make spin-offs, not as much fun, and generally wretched ice cream. We get them for desert sometimes in this senior housing I live in! 🤪
@@beatricethomas3056 the new Dixie cup ice cream isn't ice cream. I don't know what the slimy sludge is, but definitely not ice cream. It should be against the Geneva Convention to serve it to road kill let alone people.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop What a nice flashback. I hadn't thought about those in years, but I do now remember them fondly. I guess that's what we would call the good old days, ;-).
Dixie cups as ice cream were small paper cups with a pull off lid that was eaten with the provided flat wooden spoon. Used to get them in school.
Exactly, thank you, Roger! 😊
Yep
Great little bowl....Gonna try this as my first lathe project. Thanks!
Go for it, Anthony, have fun! 😊
Great little bowl. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching, Jon! 😊
Paper cups manufactured since 1907; The Dixie Cups had several hits in 60's. We only know these things because we are old.
True enough, Lewis, on all counts! 😊
Mr. Dye ....you ever use Snyder machines ? making cups
I wore a ‘Dixie Cup’ in the Navy till I made Chief. ‘67 to ‘97.
Cool, thanks! 😊
Nailed it!
I’ve been watching your videos from 2018. It is nice to see something current. I love watching you work.
Awesome! Thank you, Karl! 😊
I hope that your arm is fully healed by now, and that you’re back 100%. Love your work!
😊
Dixie Cup is the brand name for a line of disposable paper cups that were first developed in the United States in 1907 by Lawrence Luellen, a lawyer in Boston, Massachusetts, who was concerned about germs being spread by people sharing glasses or dippers at public supplies of drinking water.
Cool, thanks for the info, Judit!
Dixie cup was a brand of paper cups. Very nice little piece.
That's true, David but I think you aren't old enough to remember what I was talking about. LOL! Thank you!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I'm old enough. Chocolate please.
That is the Dixie Cup I remember, too, David. We used to get small ice cream cups, but they had a different name. I was.born in 1957. Maybe it was a regional thing?
@@medaily57 I was also born in 1957. I don't remember now where it was, but I have driven past the Dixie Cup factory, which had a water tower in the shape of a Dixie cup.
@@davidnickell9381 I am in the Kansas City area. No memory of the Dixie Cup Ice Cream at all.
Nice simple quick project.
Glad you like it, Shane, thanks! 😊
Phil I love the little bowl. My husband was in Navy and the white hat was called dixie cup.
Hope and praying your arm gets better soon.
Thank you so much, Bonnie! 😊
When I was in the Navy we used to call our white hats Dixie cups.
Cool, Jim! I could see that now that you mention it! 😊
Take care of your arm even if it means slowing down a bit to uploading a video every 10-14 days instead of each week. Adorable little piece! 👍👍👍
Thank you, Vicki! The arm is getting better. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop did you ever get checked out by the doctor?

My neighbors cut down a beautiful cherry wood tree. It was in bad shape but the wood is gorgeous. They let me grab pieces for my turtle habitat. I'd love to swipe the whole tree. 😆 Lots of cracks but beautiful grain. That is a perfect little bowl.
Cool! Thanks for watching! 😊
Nice! I love that you left the cracks
Always! Thanks, Stephen! 😃
Thank You Phil...(i am getting spoiled)...What happened to that Wild & Crazy Phil that drilled his woodworm screw hole without tape???...It looked like a medium size bowl until you used your negative rake scraper inside than it all came into perspective...Probably felt good turning at a higher RPM...I would guess with all your computer work the nerves in your arm are looking for a vacation???...Take Care Of Yourself Phil...TM
Good observation with the scraper, Tuffy. I did not notice that on replay, now I gotta go look. I bet it made the bowl look minatureized! 😊
Хорошее изделие, браво мастеру!!!!
Большое спасибо! 😊
Beautiful bowl simple and elegant.
Glad you like it, Gary, thank you! 😊
Beautiful little bowl. God bless you.
Thank you very much! 😊
Great bowl for change or paper clips or other small things. Beautiful. Take care of yourself.
Thank you, Shari, I will! 😊
Really great video.
I'm going to start looking for small interesting branches to turn.
Thank you so much for posting.
😊
Great job on the bird mouth bowl,
Thank you, John! Cheers!
Excellent piece. The good thing about working through an injury is that it forces people to improve their technique to reduce their pain.
Thank you, Charlie! 😊
Nice bowl, really cute and quick project!
🤩❤❤❤👍
Thank you, Ann! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil lovely little bowl love the bark colour when finished, as the old saying goes " Nice things come in little packages".
Absolutely! Thank you, John!
That’s cute, beautiful! ❤🇬🇧
Thank you, Maud! 😄
Lovely little cup, cute.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Ice cream cup, cardboard lid. Great as a kid.
Yes and a wooden spoon! 😊
Phil I must be older than you.
Dixi cups were vanilla ice cream with a little wooden flat spoon attached, usually sold in grocery stores.
The female group you were grasping at was the Dixie Chicks.
You are partly correct, Doreen. The ice cream part is right on! The Dixie Chicks were from the 90's. I think I might be much older than you if you don't remember the Dixie Cups Girl Group from the 60's, but you will when you listen to this song:
czcams.com/video/h6axevxj5x0/video.html

Beautiful little bowl. Sincerely, you make it look so effortless. Get better soon
Thank you, Rocio! 😊 The arm is getting better. Cheers!
Phil, I just adore this little bowl. I do hope your arm feels better soon. Here in the US a dixie cup was in a holder in the bathroom to hold small cups for water. We also had one in the kitchen for small drinks of water, then you could just throw them out. No cup to wash. God Bless you!
Thank you, Dotty! 😊

Love this one!!!!
So glad! 😊
I made something similar to that but a little larger. I went too deep and had a beautiful hole at the bottom. (too small for a sink) I fit a coffee filter in it, filled it with soil and a small plant. It was a hit at the craft sale. I am thinking of making more of these mistakes. 🙂
Sounds great! 😊
Very nice bowl. And besides ice creaj, Dixie Cup was the term of endearment we Sailors would call our White Hat. Thanks.
And the 60's girl group! 😀
That turned out very nice. I like the fact that is something small enough that I could do on my little 10" lathe. Anything over 7" is hard because it will not clear the banjo. I do a lot of spindle turning because of it.
YES! This is perfect for the smaller lathes as you point out, Dana. Quick, easy and fun! 😊
Hi Phil, it's always pleasant to turn these little scratch bowls. Have a good weekend.
Thanks, Jean-Louis, you too! 😊
We called our white hats "dixie cups" in the Navy! I can see that shape in this bowl. I've made several bowls of similar shape and never thought of that!
Yeah, those too, Brad! 😀
