- Demo, review and installation of the EMG Robert Trujillo signature pickups rip tide. I also used the Tech 21 Bass FlyRig to emulate some famous Metallica sounds. The pickups are solderless so easy to install, but they are active so it might be challenging on the tight spaces on a Jazz bass, check out how I did it!

I haven't got the right word to describe Rob's tone with Metallica. It's punchy and growly but not muddy. I love it personally. Suits my taste very well. Wish I had a J bass to slap a set of these into. Maybe a cheapo DIY kit lol
You can get a cheap kit for around 100€
I feel like squishy or ooblecky is a good word for his lead tone
Just get a Sire and upgrade with these puppies.
Awesome video. Not many going around like this. I just ordered a set. Can't wait to pop these into my fender deluxe.
Fantastic video! I've just bought one for my warwick cv bass, and I'm so looking forward to install these pickups on my gear. Your video's information really helped me. Thanks for the video my friend!!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I'm glad it was useful in making the right choice, they're great pickups! :)
Fantastici, video impeccabile come sempre
HEY thats awesome, I installed into my Geddy! I changed the pickguard to black to really set it off and blend with the black chrome
Wow that is Awesome!!!! I love rob !!!
The high end ping is crazy, these must be great slappers too which is no surprise given their namesake.
Great video! I followed your instructions and install them painlessly.I find mine a little quiet, very low volume. I was expecting a boost in output volume. Nice tone though.
The sound here and definitely the variety of colors is really good. Very odd though, I don't here Rob or any other type of EMG "active" sound. These sound passive to me, almost like Duff McKagan's live sound.
emg bass pickups with a passive eq is a very balenced subtle sound. thats why a lot of studio legends like lee sklar use them.
The challenges you had fitting in the battery is why I'm likely doing QP or Model J for my Jazz. I also don't really care to take off the front plate.
Do you plan to review the new Claypool Pickups for P bass by EMG? I have seen them in the EMG promotional video together with these RipTide and I got interested in them.
I'd love to! Though I'm not sure when I will be able to get hold of a set, online shops don't seem to have an exact date
@@OliverTobyn look a lot like the relentless middle dimarzio
I have the Claypool P pickup in my 40th Anniversary Squire P and they sound like a jazz bass growl with a P bass placement. I like ‘em.
reading the emg website these are just regular emg J pickups with a special color on them.
Yep exactly! Same with the claypools Just the EMG PA pickup with the metalworks covers
Question; I have EMG's with the pole pieces exposed on my jazz bass (battery is under control plate) and it is wired MASTER VOL, BLEND, BASS, TREBLE. I noticed that these Rip Tide pickups come with 3 knobs VOLUME, VOLUME, TONE. I take it I'd have to buy the Rip Tide pups but then also buy their BTS preamp which comes with the 4 knobs w/ the same functions that I currently have, is that correct?
Yes, electronics on the Trujillo pickups are passive, just the pickups are active. So if you want an active EQ you'll need to get that separately
Hi sir, u mentioned that U used a different battery terminal but u forgot to explain how or where u got the other battery terminal from and what did u do with connectors that were on the original(EMG) battery terminal. Did u cut them off and reconnect onto new battery terminal. Or does emg supply that other battery terminal?
Hi there, I just bought it from an electronics shop, and made it myself using other connectors. I don't think EMG makes it this way
Question for you
Did you use the stock foam, or something else?
I’m having a hell of a time with getting the height correct between my pickups and strings.
I don't remember to be honest, stock probably. Though since every pickup is always a bit different it's best to use a new piece of foam cut for the purpose
How is the battery life of these pickups? Normal J set saus 3000 hours while this set says 1000. Its probably the darn steel cover. Theres a rewson axtive pickups have plastic covers. I can even hear the difference with a metal humbucker pickup. Its subtle but there.
I want the chrome and active EMGs on my Aerodyne Jazz bass but not the low battery life or any sound compromise.
Noob question, I’m new to bass. I have a pj bass and I want to swap out the jazz pickup with one of these but they only come in sets. Will using one of them work or no? I apologize if this question is insanely stupid. 😅
No worries, questions are meant to be asked! You can in theory use just one of them on a PJ bass, but of course you'll need to use the 9v battery just for that pickup, plus some mods to connect the solderless electronics to the split pickup
@@OliverTobyn thank you!
Hi Oliver! Where have you found the different battery clip?
Just found them on eBay, you can get them on Amazon as well
Could I fit these in a 5 string fender jazz bass?
You could, some 5 string basses can fit these pickups, but it all comes down to size. Check the measurements on your bass and on the pickup spec sheet
Hi, was wondering if this came with three or four pots? Cause during the unboxing there looked to be a spot for a fourth
There were three, it's probably just a standard box they have. If I'm not mistaken the jack was in the fourth spot
@@OliverTobyn ohh ok gotcha. The bass i was gonna put them in has a volume and tone for each pickup so i guess they wont work
@@Kneithrabandofficial it will if you can manage to get an extra EMG tone knob
@@OliverTobyn how would i wire it then?
@@Kneithrabandofficial I remember seeing quite a few schematics on the EMG website, have a look, there was definitely a way to have two volumes and two tones
Would the battery fit in a Squier Affinity Jazz bass too?
Probably, you can try inserting one and see if it goes all the way in
@@OliverTobyn I mean will I be able to fit it under the volume pot, are they the same size?
@@magnus2543 That would depend on how deep the cavity is. With the provided EMG pots it fits just barely
On my Geddy Lee 2004 is impossibile to insert pickups for millimeters Of wide space. Had You some problems?
No problems, it is a very tight fit but I managed to get them in. Mine is a MIJ Geddy Lee as well, not sure about the year. The only real issue I had was the battery connector, as I mentioned in the video
My bass too is a MIJ but the Lower part Of my pickups is equal to cavity and is the same on my US Standard 1999
10:30 sounds more like a Geddy Lee tone.
What version of the Flyrig are you using?
It's the first version, it only has the VT Bass DI as a preamp
Would you say these are good pickups to get when you're not that good yet, or do you think they're more for experienced players
I would say that if you like them, and can afford them, then go for it. Doesn't matter how experienced you are as long as you enjoy them :)
@@OliverTobyn thank you!!
are those pickups single coil or stacked coil?
They should be both split coils, like a Precision bass pickup, just in line to fit a Jazz bass shape
I am dying laughing at all the riffs Robert didn’t write…. Try some bass lines that Robert wrote, some old Infectious Grooves or Suicidal Tendencies….
And it was painful to here Cliff and Jason's basslines played wrong as well!
Is it just me or do these sound ghastly?
Ghastly, how?
@@OliverTobyn there's no apparent warmth to them. Which is fine if that's the sound you're chasing, but it's not for me at all.
I run them in my Geddy and thru an ampeg, I can get metal and warm tones from them.
@@eliotmccann2589 this oliver dude here just like cristal clear bass tones with much high 😁
