For me, this is one of the rare moments when an excellent singer with full controll over an extraordinary instrument transcends the boundaries of mere 'good singing', 'good technique', 'musical intelligence', giving way to a heart-wrenching vulnerability and abandon, an exposed and unprotected humanity.
What makes Shicoff and his singing so grand for me is the fact that he never sacrifices the firmness and beauty of the vocal line for expression (as a more mediocre singer might do) - in fact, apart from being so touching, it is also one of the best renditions of the aria by technique, evenness, legato, phrasing, intonation, and other directly musical parameters. He achieves this extraordinary portrayal THROUGH his flawless singing, his understanding of the character and the words, transcending all elements further, merging them on a high level...
Thank you, ditogam, thank you, Neil!

Neil Shicoff operatically bit off more than he could chew. He gained a reputation for canceling and also increased anxiety before stepping onto the stage. Also, he went through a messy divorce and a nasty custody battle regarding his daughter - and these problems sadly crept into his professional life. I last heard him on 2 Met Broadcasts as Don Jose and Manrico - neither role of which he was well suited. His tone had become far more astringent and a collection of raw nerve endings. Eventually, he phased out his singing career entirely. He was supposed to sing PETER GRIMES at the Met but evidently he withdrew from these performances.

A direct copy of Corelli. Listen to LEMESHEV

Corelli never sang Lensky. Lemeshev is terrific, Kozlovsky, too- and Gedda. BUT, for me, Shicoff owns this role.

Nope. He's nothing to do with Corelli vocally. Lemeshev is not bad but for me Fritz Wunderlich owns this aria.
