    Interesting thoughts on the sandbox vibes.
    I just played Vinhos for the first time this weekend (and I loved it), but I didn't see much difference between the initial goals/sandboxy-ness of it and Lisboa.
    You mention you start off with a vineyard in Vinhos, but that certainly didn't really feel like a goal it was pushing you toward or anything (a free cellar, Porto wine, etc)...they feel like more of an upgrade than a goal or direction.
    Then like you mention, goals come out during the game that you can "buy" and then work toward.
    Not saying you are wrong or anything : ) I just had more trouble really seeing the difference between Vinhos and Lisboa, in that respect.
    Lisboa looks great...and I truly love your videos. Please keep up the good work...you are an absolute gem for the community.
    Many thanks!

    Another great review from Rahdo, thanks! I will add it in the "Mercado de Lisboa" pledge manager! Amazing work from Vital Lacerda. And it's always enjoyable listening something about my lovely city of Lisboa!

    Hey Rahdo, awesome review. Had some doubts about this game but your video hrlped me to decide.
    Also, it seems the point about a lack of guidance at the start of the game can be solved. There's a new goal (number 16 I guess), that add a deck of cards that help to guide players in order for the tô focus on something and don't feel só Lost at the beginning of the game.
    Keep up the Good videos, and cheers from Brazil !!!

    Great job. I'm a fledgling euro player and when I first saw the game I was very overwhelmed. But you did a good overview and now I am pretty excited to play it soon at my local game store.

    I was having a conversation with a game designer about some rules... like your sandbox or pre-drawing decrees... eventually we kind of agreed to disagree but left in agreement that the beauty of board games as opposed to video games is that you can play it any way you want.

  • @atonaltensor
    @atonaltensor Před 7 lety +3

    It seems like all of the heavy euro designers are moving in the sandbox direction: Rosenberg, Feld, Lacerda, and Pfister all have released more sandboxy games recently. I'm also not a fan of sandbox games, but it makes me wonder if there is a reason for this trend. Artistic zeitgeist and what-not.

    • @freejunk2
      @freejunk2 Před 7 lety +1

      why do you want to have a goal given to you by the game? you should define that yourself.

    • @atonaltensor
      @atonaltensor Před 7 lety +5

      freejunk2 I enjoy feeling acute pressure and stress in board games (i.e. Feeding your workers in Agricola.) When a game is more sandboxy, most of the pressure comes from competing with other players, which can still be stressful but is more of a diffuse kind of stress. When a game is threatening to put the hammer down on you unless you do X, it feels much more intense.

    I was going to wait until it was published to order this but you talked me into it. As a fan of Rosenberg's sandbox games, this one looks like it will hit the sweet spot for me. Thanks for the video!

  • @windyhillbomber
    @windyhillbomber Před 7 lety

    Got this on pre-order and absolutely can't wait. I am interested in Richard's comments on the sandbox nature of Lisboa. On one hand I fully understand the dynamic a clear game goal can provide. However I tend to find that such prescribed objectives with a multi path euro can and often leads you to missing out on some of the games broader nuances and mechanics. The challenge is, often through multiple play through to actually pin down the most effective path to victory. In that way the game will continue to evolve as an experience for the player. I wouldn't let the seemingly limited "sub plot" game goals deter you from exploring the open ended deepness of a game like this. Anyway, if in doubt, rebuild Lisbon.

  • @Gutock
    @Gutock Před 7 lety +2

    I feel like there has to be some sort of variant for drawing goals at the beginning of the game. Not sure how balanced it would be, but I'm pretty sure that's how I'll play it... I'm not a gigantic sandboxy guy either, but this looks truly awesome mechanically.

    • @MrZadokpc
      @MrZadokpc Před 7 lety +4

      Just a few minutes ago we came out with the idea of a starter pack of decree cards to set a guide to new players. In an advanced variant you dont need to use this cards. Working on these right now to add them to the KS.

    • @Gutock
      @Gutock Před 7 lety +2

      That is absolutely awesome :) I definitely understand the appeal to a more open board, but like Richard, I feel that adding a little pressure/guidance in the beginning makes games far more enjoyable. Thank you for taking feedback on this!

    Hi Rahdo. I've never played any games designed by Vital Lacerda, although I've seen your videos for most of them. I was wondering if this is a good title to start with, or if I should try one of his previous games before... Thanks for your videos, by the way. They are constantly helping when I'm trying to decide if a game is good or not for me.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  Před 7 lety +5

      all of vital's games are roughly equal in terms of depth and complexity, so i think you should start with the one who's theme attracts you most :)

    Hi Rahdo, I wanted to know how impactful is the downtime between turns? I understand that you basically explained each turn in detail in this video but how is it when you actually play the game? Also what would you say is average playtime for two players? Thank you for this video, it really gave me a feel for the game!

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  Před 7 lety +4

      turns can take awhile, but this is also a game where you can be thinking about your turn while others are taking theirs as you've already got your hand of cards and the whole board to consider. jen and i are slow players, so it took close to 2 hours for us, but i imagine regular couples would be closer to 90 min

    • @MrZadokpc
      @MrZadokpc Před 7 lety +1

      45min per player is the average time. I have played this game around 50 times.

    • @filiplazov5895
      @filiplazov5895 Před 7 lety

      wow 45 mins, you are actually saying you can finish 2 player game in less than two hours?

    • @MrZadokpc
      @MrZadokpc Před 7 lety +2

      Maybe not the first couple of plays. But once you get to know the game and what path you want to follow the game flows really well. You play a card and that set in motion a lot of things, but all of them are easy to grasp and understand.

    Sandbox games aee so much better than games that restrict and push in certain directions. Freedom is always better in the long run than control, in games and also in life.

  • @LettersofVerax

    Vital is my favourite designer, but sadly, I'm quickly finding myself being priced out of his games.

    • @2dTones
      @2dTones Před 7 lety +1

      Same, I'd like to back this but even if it dodges customs duty it'll be over £90. I know from the Gallerist that the production quality will be high, but man, that's in the same price bracket as TI3 with an expansion...

    • @kevinspoll4142
      @kevinspoll4142 Před 7 lety +1

      Actually you can get it for about 78 pounds with shipping included here: www.philibertnet.com/en/46416-lisboa-king-s-favorite-2100000334629.html
      (UK is not listed in their shipping chart, but it's zone 2: www.geekdo.com/thread/1592988/philibert-shipping-uk)
      I like the EGG kickstarters, because thanks to philibert you can get their games with very reasonable shipping costs througout europe. Its not cheap but with the awesome production qualitity it's woth it imo.

    • @LettersofVerax
      @LettersofVerax Před 7 lety

      Well, obviously. Patience with buying board games isn't my strong suit. : D

    • @LettersofVerax
      @LettersofVerax Před 7 lety

      The EGG kickstarters are great and, yes, the production is outstanding. But I have bills to pay! Plus, I'm not in Europe/UK, so 78 pounds is actually roughly the same as just ponying up for the KS.

    • @LeRoi81
      @LeRoi81 Před 6 lety

      Simply buying fewer but more quality games. Funny that most of the gamers complains about prices but have a collection of 500+ games and a lot through kickstarter.

  • @Nain1982
    @Nain1982 Před 7 lety +1
