Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Skoda Octavia is a car, which you cannot rationally dislike. It's spacious, it can be well-equipped, and if go easy on the options, it can be very reasonably priced. Especially for its size. Although Skoda Octavia is a compact car, in terms of size it is closer to D-segment models. Is a 1.0 TSI engine enough for a car as big, as the Octavia?

    Last October I've rented one for a 3 weeks vacation in Romania, see my family and friends. She was a 1.0TSI 6MT, fairly equipped white rental car. I found her spacious enough for 4 adults an one child, very practical with the hatch style boot lid. I like very much the minimalist, teutonic design (born and raised in EU, go figure). The only downside is that, overpassing it's a little bit tricky, sometimes, with the power that this small engine delivers, otherwise quite apropriate for normal use. For reference, my daily car is a Focus 2018 (2.0 DCT).Congrats for the presentation, you are one of the best EU car reviewer, at least in my oppinion!

    I also own an Octavia. 1,6 TDI, 81 kW (110 bhp).
    My experience until now:
    Excellent consumption figures for this big girl: ~7,5 l/100 in the city, ~4,8 l/100 outside the city. These values were obtained while driving in a normal manner: not too sporty and not too lazy. Just keeping up with the traffic. Start&Stop helps saving ~0,5 l/100 in the city, but that's about it.
    Huge trunk, as Marek said, and also a lot of legroom both in the front and in the rear seats.
    Amundsen satnav is just enough for me, I do not feel the need for Columbus. Still, a little flaw chews on my nerves: it has a bit of lag. The arrow representing the car is 5-10 meters behind the actual position and that made me miss some turns.
    The rear view camera is just brilliant because, even if it costs ~250 euro, it saved me other several hundreds of euros which were to be spent on repairing the back of the car. The design of the rear seats and the rear window doesn't allow for a great visibility, so the risk to hit something when reversing is quite big. Go for the camera, no doubt about it.
    Bixenon headlights: way better than the halogen, from my point of view. Better illumination because of the white light and also thanks to the AFS and that "city mode" feature which makes the headlamp on the left side to move a bit to the left when you do less than 50 km/h. In this way you get a larger light angle in front of the car which is quite helpful in a darker street.
    Bluetooth for the phone is also nice as long as you are alone in the car and you don't turn the volume too high -> people on the street will hear everything.
    The Canton audio system is just nice to have, the classic audio system from the factory is more than enough.
    I also love that you can get all three mirrors with autodimming, I do enjoy this a lot when I am driving at night and somebody with wrong adjusted headlamps drives behind me.
    The signal lamps on the mirrors have a small design flaw: the bit situated at the end of the mirrors sends light also to the driver and the one on the left is a bit annoying, as it flashes in the visual range of the driver. It is ok by day, but it is a nuissance during night driving.
    The plastic piece situated at the base of the gear shifter: at my car it is grey and shiny and it reflects the sunlight directly into my eyes when I drive around noon in a sunny day. This also applies for those chrome decorations at the ventilation holes.
    That what came into my mind now. If other details are needed, I can try to answer. :-)
    Cheers & drive safe!

      One note about the Bixenon. I got Bixenon on my Octavia as well. Not only do they light up the road great, they also look awesome on the car and gives the car that muscular look the car really deserves. Definitely worth the extra money. I got Audio parking sensor, more than enough. I honestly prefer that over rear camera.The Amundsen system is also enough for me and it's simple and fast to use. My Bluetooth is working great with fast connection the moment you start the car. What color is your Octavia?

    • @puftepos
      @puftepos Před 7 lety

      Hi!
      I have both the rear parking sensors and the camera. The sensors will switch from beeping to making continuos noise when you have less than 0,5 meters to the object behind you, I was not satisfied with this because that is when I need their help, in tiny parking spots. And there is where the camera comes to help, you can see exactly what you are doing. :-) Where I live, the parking spots are a bit tricky to get and I have found myself several times forced to park in a very small place. That is why I recommend the camera.
      The bixenon headlights look, indeed, quite badass :D Especially with those LED DRL. But this is the secondary reason for which I got them. The main reason is the excellent light which they provide and the intelligent manner they swivel around when driving on a curvy road.
      My Octavia is bright silver - it helps 'hiding' the scratches and the dirt ;-) And I also enjoy the chromatic mix of this bright silver with the black/dark elements on the exterior of the car.
      How about yours?

    • @simonstausholm8177
      @simonstausholm8177 Před 7 lety

      I clearly see your point. Where I live I dont suffer with parking problems and therefore I'm not in need for a rear camera. If I have to be honest I would never buy a Octavia without the Bi Xenon lights. I see way to many Octavias in the daily with halogen lights and it just doesn't look right. But I agree, the light is truly wonderful. My Octavia is silver as well. To me the color is both elegant and easy to maintain. I have black Turini 18'' equipped also and it's a hatchback so I think I have accomplished a sporty and elegant look at the same time. Mine is only 1 month old and so far it's the best car I've owned. :-)

    • @puftepos
      @puftepos Před 7 lety

      Congrats on your new car :-) How do you deal with the 18" wheels? Is it ok when you drive on a bumpy road? I went for the 16" Minoris at the summer tyres and the classic 15" steel at the winter ones. Also, I bought the so called "heavy roads pack" (the translation might not be so accurate...) - it provides ~2 cm of extra clearance and some extra shield on the belly of the car. Quite usefull when driving on the roads in Romania...
      Got mine in July 2016 and last week I have just passed the 22.000 km milestone.

    And that was in normal with ac on.

The engine is smooth, quiet and surprisingly powerful. I also own a Fabia 1.2tsi and I prefer the 1.0lt engine. You do not need to thrash the engine as it pulls really well from low in the rev range. With this kind of milage you're wasting money driving a diesel (from fuel consumption and maintenance cost perspective). On cold days your diesel engine probably doesn't reach optimum temperature before you arrive and turn it off. I don't know what are/were tax incentives in your market to buy a diesel. I know its totally off topic but Formula 1 race cars currently use 1.6 L engines (hybrid) and are almost equally as fast as predecessors, consume much less fuel and the engines durability is much higher than ever before, also because of restriction to use 3 or 4 engine units for one season while before it was not limited.
