Mark Knopfler has an incredible curiosity about people. His biographical and lyrical songs reach across time to bring them into our spheres. He isn't just an entertainer. He is a teacher that we don't realize is educating. We learn as we enjoy his musical genius.

Well, didn’t Mark work as an English teacher at one point (as well as a journalist), before he focused on a career in music full time?
In that case, Mark using his musical gifts and his love for storytelling, to teach us a thing or two makes sense.
He is surely a favourite, when it comes to music, simply like his style of guitar playing and his outlook on songwriting.
I don’t like the idea of putting “stars” on a pedestal, I think think Mark does NOT come across as your typical “celebrity”.
I’m glad about that, he seems to simply be himself. Good on him.

I’ve always said that his songs are little history lessons. I’ve learned so much about the UK and other places from him, googling places like Spanish City and Dog Leap Stairway and terms like Border Reiver. What other rock musician writes with such variety and depth? He’s such an incredible poet and lyricist, as well as musician.

Back in 2001 when Mark toured the world to promote Sailing to Philadelphia, I got to talk to him after one of his shows in where else but Philadelphia. We were outside the Tower Theater and it was drizzling. We didn't care. At the end he signed my program with a black marker and told me to be careful not to "smoodge" it.

I have noticed as the years have passed that Mark has become more reflective and is a man/guitarist with a whole lot of soul. Cripes, I hardly recognize him anymore without the red Strat and the cowboy shirt and headband. You could walk right by him in a guitar shop and not even know it was him, .....until he started playing! Those MTV days are long gone...but Mark is still here. He looks like your everyday older gentleman about the neighborhood. Just your every day guy.

The song got me thinking about Mason and Dixion and the difficult job they were hired to perform, which lead me here. I'm what's called a numismatist. I also deal in rare coins so I'm known as a coin dealer. But anyone with a few bucks can "deal" in coins but those of us who actually study history and use these little spheres of knowledge to do so are called numismatists and we are considered a notch above from a standpoint of knowledge certainly about rare coinage.
Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. In my opinion he is certainly Hendrix material but Mark is even on a different level than Hendrix or Clapton or even some of the classical guitarists, he's deeper, and he understands history and it's importance to study, like Telegraph Road, the Mason Dixon line etc. Mark if a "coin dealer" would be a Numismatist. and I would be honored to call him a fellow numismatist or coin weanie ha! I truly appreciate this incredible documentary. One of my favorite songs of all time made better with the back story of its creation. Mark’s artistry not only tells the story, but makes us feel the hope and dreams of a new land. Even today the Mason Dixon line carries a more emotional response rather than a simple geographic demarcation. Thank you for posting this.

Everyone gets to leave their mark on the world. Just not musically all of the time. There are other great ways to do great things. Just everyday, ordinary people. We are all part of the whole. Mark just happens to be the very best guitar player that ever held a guitar. Completely unmatched by anyone.

I think someone might have mentioned the book Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon (one of my favourite books) - I'd be surprised if Mark Knopfler hadn't read it before writing this song and been at least partly inspired by it. Really a very imaginative account of their lives, and moving - particularly of the end of their lives I thought. Also one of my favourite songs by Mark Knopfler - I have 5 different versions of it on my computer, because I love all of them!

HadesLane I think you are correct, I enjoyed the book immensely too. Whatever the reason for Mark producing this song, I’m glad he did.

HadesLane MK did say in an interview that he did read the Pynchon book, which was his inspiration for the song.

@@paulaisomura4894 A collaboration of two geniuses - Pynchon and Knopfler - telling the story of another two geniuses. Seriously, one of my favorite books and one of my favorite songs.

What’s interesting is, most people here in the US don’t know anything about these cats. Most know the phrase “Mason-Dixon Line” but have no knowledge of the history or actual meaning of it. I love that MK brings historical events to life through song! ⚜️☮️❤️🎶

I need immediate transportation assistance for my safety. I am terrified to leave my house which as has surveillance on the main floor so I hide in room. I have been living like this for over six months. Can you provide assistance. My car is not even safe as I am flagged for police brutality, I it’s 💯 harassment. My ex partners new truck has surveillance cameras on the passengers side, he doesn’t believe me. Amnesty international Canada said they will call in three business days. My only hope

I live a 2 minute walk from the house where Jeremiah and his brother, George, lived on Garden House Lane, Cockfield. It's currently up for sale.
Much as I admire Mark Knopfler's recognition for Jeremiah Dixon, Jeremiah was not a Geordie.
