Why boycotting the NFL because of Ray Rice is not the answer

  • Katie Nolan explains why she won't boycott the NFL and the game she loves:
    Fear crept in. I started thinking, well, the commissioner is here as a guest of Fox, and if offend him in some way, I'm definitely going to hear about it from my bosses. And it's really not my role. I make sort of funny videos for the Internet that are watched by a handful of people. This wasn't my place.
    So I stayed quiet. I didn't ask. I played the role that had been assigned to me.
    Women in sports television are allowed to read headlines, patrols sidelines and generally facilitate conversation for their male colleagues. Sometimes, they even let us monitor the Internet from a couch. And while the Stephen A. Smiths, Mike Francesas, Dan Patricks and Keith Olbermanns of the world get to weigh in on the issues of the day, we just smile and throw to commercial A lot of people like to justify women's supporting role in sports media by saying, well, they've never played the game so they just aren't qualified to speak about it. Because, God forbid, someone misspeak about the game. But topics like domestic violence and racism and corruption? Let's let Boomer handle those between downs.
    It's time for the conversation to change, or at least for those participating in the conversation. It's time for women to have a seat at the big boy table, and not where their presence is a gimmick or a concept-just a person who happens to have breasts offering their opinion on the sports they love and the topics they know.
    Because, the truth is, the NFL will never respect women and their opinions as long as the media it answers to doesn't. I'm ready when you are, Fox.

    Geezus! Katie has bigger balls and bigger brains than all the guys on the announcing and commentary side of things in football. If anyone should be the first woman TV commentator in the booth for NFL games, it should be Katie. Not because of her looks or anything else but her deep knowledge of and love for the game. And Fox, if you're listening, you'd look like frickin' geniuses for making that happen. #GetKatieInTheBooth

    • @fidorover
      @fidorover Před 9 lety +11

      P.S. She's also funnier than everyone in football combined. Troy Aikman isn't funny enough to be Katie's door mat.

    • @fidorover
      @fidorover Před 9 lety +5

      a - rock Just saying that humor helps. John Madden would crack me up with his little funny observations on things -- like how he once used the Telestrator to show us how Golden Retrievers are the happiest looking dogs. Just makes the game more fun to watch.

    • @fidorover
      @fidorover Před 9 lety +5

      David Kob Seriously, forget the humor part for now. Go look at her live-Tweeting of NFL games. I've been an NFL junkie since the age of 5 -- and played football from 3rd Grade to 12th Grade -- but her adept analysis and knowledge of many of the intricacies of the game is pretty impressive, if not staggering. And even if she never had to read coverages in an actual NFL game like Troy Aikman had to, I'll take her vast knowledge and amazing personality over the monotone dronings of Phil Simms and Troy Aikman any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

    • @RedEyeHill
      @RedEyeHill Před 9 lety +3

      David Kob "You do realize football is very complicated, right?" - are you suggesting that Nolan can't analyze a complicated sport like football because she's a woman??
      It's NOT as simple as "if she was the preferred person....she would have the job." Men are consistently chosen for jobs over women, even if the woman is as qualified if not more so than her male colleagues. What world do you live in?

    • @RedEyeHill
      @RedEyeHill Před 9 lety +2

      David Kob Never in my comment did I say that she *should* replace Troy Aikman. I also never mentioned her tweets. I think you have me confused with someone else. So please don't call me an idiot when you obviously didn't read my comment very well.
      My problem with your earlier comment ("You do realize football is very complicated, right?") is that you seem to suggest that because football is complicated a woman couldn't possibly analyze it the same way that a man can. What I'm saying is: IF Nolan was as qualified as Aikman (or any other man in sports; and I never said she was or wasn't), it wouldn't be surprising if she was passed over for the job *because* she's a woman.

    Why boycotting the NFL because of Ray Rice is not the answer

    • @RobNation84
      @RobNation84 Před 9 lety +5

      Katie, I have been a fan of yours since CGW... what you said topped my opinion! I think you nailed the general consensus problem of the NFL's stances towards the media to an absolute T with this one.
      The NFL in my opinion is a chauvinist carnival run by men who think women are only a mere side-show. It is borderline discriminatory what I see on the weekly telecasts and in Paul Brown Stadium where I cheer the Bengals on each week. You do not see a woman as an analyst or a pre-game analyst as I hope one day there will be. No, you see some "hot girl brought in to draw ratings" prowling the sidelines in whatever length of heel FOX or NBC or CBS thinks is sexy enough to let them talk for 30 seconds about a guy's groin tear thinking her mere presence is going to turn me on. I am a guy who believes a true heart and soul make better turn ons than a high heel or a skirt or makeup. All I see is someone providing me the vital information I need to know whether or not my star QB is going to be replaced, among the other useful tidbits a sideline reporter can provide. I sincerely hope that the networks that carry the greatest football in the world will one day finally understand that women DO have opinions and CAN provide great personal commentary and analysis and even play-by-play, and put them amongst the men in the broadcast booth. The WWE has proven they can allow this; I saw a female commentator on their programs just the other day and thought it was awesome; and they provide nothing but entertainment and performance on a seemingly nightly basis.
      The problem with what I see is that is not what the NFL sees. For example, the Ray Rice incident. I believe it is sickening and a failure of his job title when Roger Goodell looks at a domestic violence case and only suspends the guilty for two measly early season games. A change of pace does not cut it. If he really wanted to make a statement he could have extended the suspension to make Mr. Rice adhere to the new rules. It would have made a true statement to tell people that "hey we fouled up, this is what we did to correct it." Rather, the NFL just said "oops, looks like the media is all pissed off... better appease them" while keeping Rice's 2-game farce of a ban intact the way it was. Then Mr. Goodell takes action after ACTUALLY LOOKING AT THE KNOCKOUT BLOW ON TAPE after the first game of the suspension. "WHOOPS," says Mr. Goodell, who finally takes the action he had TWO chances to take before.
      You, as a journalist, should always be able to report the way you need to. You, as a human being and an American, have the right to speak your mind when you feel the need is appropriate. YOU, not any boss. The only way anyone will ever have a say in the world is if they demand it through action and through their voice. Say things loud and proud and SOMEBODY will listen. As a fan of yours, I will definitely listen. One listener is still a listener, and a big difference.
      Ms. Nolan, I look forward to any reply you may have to this, and I definitely look forward to your future content. Keep up the impressive work!

    I've been watching your videos long before the speed-round hit its first anniversary and this is by far one of the best works you've done. You put aside your usual snarky, Rob Ryan bashing comedy for something that goes well beyond the small world of sports or even today's modern version of journalism and commentary. Domestic issues such as these should not be allowed within any sport, especially the sport that represents our entire culture, and it doesn't take a genius or a specific gender to understand the apathy that the NFL has shown for this reoccurring dilemma.
    Thank you for putting your job aside and not only voicing your opinion but offering a feasible solution to a problem that quite frankly shouldn't exist. And thank you for providing your fans with such great entertainment over the years.

    The thought of women being unable to offer commentary on football because they've never played it is just ignorant. I've never played the game either, outside of a few schoolyard games back in junior high, and I still have plenty to say when I watch a game. Why should women be any different? Way to go, Katie.

    The thing I've noticed about the Ray Rice situation and other situation where people commit acts that are viewed by the majority as universally deplorable is that everyone is a crusader for justice. Everyone now feels this overwhelming sense of a duty to speak up while "speaking up" is accepted. I say this a lot and I stand by this when major incidents like this happen especially in America there are a lot of front runners in this country. There's a lot of people that if the Ray Rice situation would've never happened would still be doing their normal routine and collecting their money not caring about any "justice or injustice". Right now there are a lot of people with agendas who can hide behind the outrage of Ray Rice and not have their agendas accurately assessed or critiqued. When it comes to the media i'm always cautious with the crusaders of justice especially when "playing that role" can increase your career opportunities.

      they wouldn't be getting paid to do it without "carriage fees" from cable companies, a hidden tax on every cable/dish subscriber to support their useless asses. i don't care what people say on youtube because i don't have to pay for it. just click by it if you don't like it. try to pass a law or have your local cable regulatory board demand a la carte channel selection and watch the mother of all special interest campaigns and bribes and campaign coffer contribution storms hit the fan. ironically, the nfl and ncca would be hurt by that kind of customer freedom, also, as they would have to live and die by the real market value of what they have to offer, only getting paid when people watch or voluntarily subscibe. very soon, 4G internet saturation is going to end all the dinosaur media preaching to you on your dime. you will stream whatever you want, when you want, where you want, from whoever you want, and the 2nd these opinionaters grab the microphone you just click on something else and they have to go out and get real jobs where their bosses will properly tell them to shut up and work..

      The thing about TV though, is I might refuse to watch something but if my coworkers are still influenced by it, if my classmates are still influenced by it and proceed to act all "Holier than thou" then me not watching it doesn't change the problem. I can stand against something and question something all I want but if the majority of people are under the influence of TV, or CZcams commentators I still will be affected by the rhetoric. Most people argue from the perspective the media has given them or reinforced with in them. Or a tleast this is my opinion.

    • @CoelhoSports
      @CoelhoSports Před 9 lety

      yeah, media fills the mass consciousness with fake drama. i still think the keith olbermans of the world would be ditch diggers if it weren't for carriage fees, though, and nobody would be repeating their opinions. maybe i'm just naive but i think when full unlimited 4g streaming hits, the most popular media won't be so preachy for market reasons (it doesn't sell) and when people at work/school try to talk about issues like this after watching binky's youtube channel we will all be so fragmented by then that conversations won't go very far. then, we can all go back to plotting and scheming against each other like the old days.

      That would actually defeat the point of Katie's comments. Just as CBS is isolating its female topic for its own show, they are missing the opportunity to have women blended into the sports media roles traditionally held by men. Katie's point is women with voices and reason should be included in the discussions being dominated by men in the sports media world.

I'm tired of former athleats getting on shows. Sure they might have played X sport but that's doesn't make them an expert on all the others. A long time reporter like Pam follows it all. The NFL is a business. They don't care much about women and that is why they wouldn't make the move on Rice as long as it didn't hurt their business. As long as you didn't see what actually happened, there were enough people/men out there that would defend Rice. After the video came out they realized that nobody could defend him and their business would take a hit by men who watch the NFL if they didn't act.
    I am not sure what pct of the market are women but I would guess most only watch the SB for the commercials. The ones that do watch are probably tough enough to look over what had happened as long as they didn't actually see what happened.
    I am glad the NFL acted but a bit disappointed that it took so long and they were willing to let the guy slide even though they really knew what had happened.

      i agree for the most part. in reality it took a video for not only the NFL to suspend him for a season, but for everyone else to jump on board. most women didnt even know this happened before it went viral on every news station in america. previously it was known he knocked her unconscious and he admitted to it, but now since you got a video from inside the elevator everyone wants to jump on board and bash on him? where were you all 8 MONTHS AGO?
      people dont understand the bigger issues, they just see this as a chance to "put a stop to domestic violence!", and get women more involved. what about every athlete with illegitimate children not being tended too? some have upwards of 10... or the drug abuse and DUI's a new star gets on a weekly basis? or the men that have been accused of murder? a Cowboys lineman is going to play this year and killed someone a few years back in a tragic car accident. but thats fine with all of you right? ray rice certainly doesnt deserve a second chance though, right?
      this was way overblown and just was a dumb way to try to say women should be more involved. but it wont happen. the nfl is a business. it tried to save their own in this situation and it back fired. if he was suspended 8 games from day one, he wouldnt have gotten the death penalty today. so for that, im sorry for ray and his wife. but anyone trying to make this into something that its not needs to seriously get real. it'll all be forgotten about just like everything else that happens in this league, give it a month.

      Quite a bit of research shows that women are actually a huge percentage of the NFL's fanbase. Don't assume that just because the NFL is extremely profitable they necessarily cater to all their fans in a perfectly rational way. It's entirely likely that the NFL has plenty of women fans DESPITE their relative inability to market directly to them or treat women with respect as a whole.

      What the fuck does being tough have to do with overlooking domestic abuse?

    • @frankv3483
      @frankv3483 Před 9 lety

      Cleromanticon Maybe tough was a poor choice of words. What I meant is that most women, and a lot of men, don't care to watch football because it is a violent sport. The women that do watch it are able to overlook this violence and see the beauty of the competitiveness of this sport. So this is what I meant by tough. OK so, if you can overlook violence in one area of your life, then it can be understood that you can overlook it in another and especially when it is your favorite team or player. I have seen a lot of people online defending the actions of this man. Before this tape came out, there were even more of them defending him. It is hard to believe.

    And we just witnessed the last time this chick is on Fox Sports. Whole heartedly agree with her on the issue of domestic violence. On the female role in football, guess what it's not all that different from the male role. You don't bite the hand that feeds you, you don't embarrass your bosses, you keep your personal opinions to yourself while on the job, and you play the role you're PAID to play. Great thing about America is you're not forced to work a specific job or for a specific company. If you don't agree with your job, company, or industry, then simply quit and find something that suits you mind, body, and soul.

      Harrison101 I get what you're saying but I think he's just trying to point out that Andrews was picked for her looks from the get go and not much else no matter what they claim. Some people at the networks might frown on putting someone on cam that doesn't fit the unofficial standard. Katie just happens to be the best of both worlds so their shouldn't be any excuses for her not to be on discussing with "the big boys"

    Good stuff, it's the one thing Ive never gotten about media & sports. I have been boycotting nfl mostly b/c I feel icky watching it now. As for media let the women speak & speak their minds, how is equal/fair time a bad thing? I'm sure the women in the sports media know more about the sports then me. Oh and can we stop criticizing women for what they are wearing because over the years I've seen some ugly things on men & turned it off.

    the way she handled her question to goodell is a microcosm of how the overall media handles the nfl. anyone who is partner with the league never challenges them and are slow to report any bad news about them. that is why websites such as deadspin, yahoo, and tmz have been out scooping the traditional sports media. they dont have to worry about loss of access or reprisal from the league itself.

    Very, very good point about a boycott removing the critical thinkers from the conversation. While, yes, she works for FOX so a boycott would indeed mean her not having a job, she really sticks it to the network in the end. I bet any higher up at the network who happened to watch this would be infuriated.

    gotta say i agree. i have made more than my share of jokes about sideline reporters (and fox's lineup of blondes), but that's the issue isn't it? women are almost never presented as having much value to sports broadcasts (play-by-play, color commentating, or analysis). and anyone saying women don't know sports is a dinosaur. i prefer a couple female beat writers for my football team (the jets) to some of their male counterparts, and im sure that's true in other places. i been following katie since the guyism days, and i'll admit it was pretty much because she was funny and had a pretty face. but im glad im here now to hear her talk about some real shit that needed to be said.

But with all this Ray Rice thing and I'm totally against any man putting his hands on a woman in a violent way, I can't help to notice that is as an society forget these me and women who are in the public life are human just as we are and they fall just we do so who are we to judge and point fingers. I was alway raised if you want to be forgiving then should forgive. Now Ray Rice is going to pay for he did hell he is paying now but we still should remember he is a human being at the end of the day

    Ray Rice's fiancee' at the time hit Ray twice, and she was walking toward him aggressively to likely hit him a 3rd. time, and he defended himself. Abuse is abuse, and this woman was the primary aggressor, and she paid the price. Women killed Chivalry years ago. Chivalry is an illusion created by and maintained by women who want to act in any violent way they wish in a relationship with impunity. Don't go around hitting people that a bigger than you, and you won't find yourself knocked out!

    Its a tough issue. Very, and and I mean very few sports reporters, announcers or analysts haven't played or coached the game they are representing. In my opinion this is why there are few women football analysts, more for basketball, and even more for tennis, and sport who's demographic is nearly split down the middle. But yeah, anyone over 50 lived in a time when women weren't allowed to wear pants on TV, so there's some sexism there.

  • @nathanp2007
    @nathanp2007 Před 9 lety +2

    I absolutely loved this. First off though i think you got pushed (literally & figuratively) to the end of the table on Crowd Goes Wild, everyone got to voice their opinions on the panel, & someone had to "man the internet" and you are the most tech friendly (and youngest) so i get why they'd choose you for that. But, i think it was a pretty fair show and i liked it cause it had so many point of views, especially from yourself (a huge fan) and Georgie Thompson, who were MUCH more than just pretty faces asking the panel of men their thoughts, you both gave your opinions and i enjoyed the both.
    Overall i can totally see why girls/women have such a hard time getting into the NFL, right from the get-go its all men and women "throwing to" those men, then you see the hot women wearing almost nothing cheering on the men playing the game (Cheerleaders), then talk of a app so you can call a Cheerleader to your seat to bring you a beer...then theres the stuff like Ray Rice that happens, and the league responding with a absurdly low punishment (Btw i could agree more that seeing a video of it should not have made a different, punching a woman should have been indefinite suspension almost universally [fact is self defense is possible, a woman can attack a man in such a way he HAS to do something, but obviously in Rice's case that did NOT happen]).
    In fact if you want to make it truly clear how high your (NFL's) standards are, no instant talk on NFL Network about "well when can he come back? America is all about second chances. Would you take him back Coach?" crap, lifetime ban IMO. But dont be sexist, what if it was video of him knocking out a man in the elevator? Would that just be a 6 game suspension? Why? Because he has a penis? How does his being a man change his face/skull/brain being just as fragile as a woman's to a punch? So its violence in general that should be harshly punished, not just violence against women.
    But again, loved the video, agree with every second of it, and for every second Fox Sports isnt creating a new show that you lead they are wasting top level talent. So funny, so smart, so likable, great opinions, great conversationalist, great interviewer...they need to make a show that you star on....the only problem is when i dream up like the perfect show id love to watch...its so close to Crowd Goes Wild lol...i want humor, facts, opinions, multiple points of views from a panel..i want awesome guests who do more than get interviewed on a couch for 4 minutes...thats CGW lol.
