This video has to rank at the top of any on the channel. To be able to view the action of Chinaco from the air gave a whole new perspective as to what he was doing and how Pat controlled him. Kudos to the drone pilot for being able to ride and operate the drone at the same time. The second ride being done outside rather than a few more sessions in the roundpen is amazing. Have not seen that with the other trainers. I also appreciate Pat's historical vignettes like this one about the Old Spanish Trail. Your dogs missed the jackrabbit at 6:45 . THANK YOU TWO SO MUCH FOR THE INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS! Helps to relieve some of the stress of the pandemic blues.
Circa 1990, I knew a guy who ALWAYS took the horse on the 'outside' ride the day after its first ride. Now a days it is too hard to find a trainer worth their salt. Oh how I wish for those good old days again!

This video brought back so many happy memories of my teen years in So. Calif. breaking wobbly babies "on" the sage filled river flats. It is a soft landing, when necessary. LOL.
Thank you for all your history lessons, as well. I teach business coursework now, so having some historical lessons as to how things were done is always helpful when explaining the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Well done! Loved the shot where he was a little bothered and you Brought him around until he softened, then you just let him think for a spell. That sand looks a great deal softer than our hard crusted snow up here. Once again, teach for living where people shouldn't.
LOL.... I know it won't go on forever, but it IS funny watching Pat trying to get Chinaco to Zag, and he Zigs, then trying to get him to Zig, and he Zags! Thank goodness no rattlers slithered in front of him! Oh Boy! That horse does have a temper... hehe... I do believe he's been a bit spoiled ;-)
(Chinaco makes me think of the Saturday morning cartoon of the bull trained for the bullfighting ring, and all the bull wants to do is smell the flowers... lol) ... Poor Chinaco! He's a good boy.

Certain bloodlines of the Morgans are tougher to start. They can have a temper but he is right, once you get past that you have a horse for a lifetime! We make an effort to combine the tough and easy bloodlines for an easier horse all around.

Every time I watch i get more excited about learning and riding my own horse. I am still green and he is young but we are getting better everyday. I was just able to finish getting a round pen set up so can't wait to start working the ground work and rope work I have seen on this channel and the video of Pats i bought. Fabulous first ride outside! I totally get how this works for starting colts. Chinaco has had a lot to process in the last 24 or so hours. Nice job! Years ago at Turf Paradise Racetrack the exercise riders and trainers would start colts in a stall at the track , after regular training hours ,(before everything had to be insured), They would have them out of the stall heading to the back gate and we all would ride those babies out in the desert and washes. It was so much fun. Now it's all built up and gone..

Ever since I hunted in the mountains north of Santa Fe I've been enamored with the old Spanish trail. Especially the way up into Colorado through the Valley Vidal into the San Luis Valley. Finding Water in the Rio Grande was tough because of the Cliffs along there. You have to look for the feeder streams coming from the mountain to the east in some stretches.

Your videos are the best for info around . I see some of these horse people unloading their horses backing out . Seems like a good way to skin up their hind shins , am I wrong ?
We prefer to turn our horses around and lead them out but our trailer is wide enough to do that.

I like your area to start an iffy horse in, soft ground incase you hit it, our trails are rock lined, not much sand. He had a good workout, sweating and breathing hard at the end. A few more rides like that and he'll be golden. I do wonder also if the drone was bothering him?
He’s pretty accustomed to drones flying around and didn’t seem to notice it.

Hi Pat. Now that you're started,how many days will you ride Chinaco before you give him a rest day? Is he barefoot at this time? I usually like to allow the hooves to strengthen early on and harden

It is a quirt. We use it on any horse ridden in a snaffle or bosal so that your rein hand is forward as you encourage your horse to go forward with the quirt. People who use the end of their mecate or end of their reins usually give mixed messages by pulling back on the reins while they use the mecate. You’re also able to use the quirt faster rather than looking around for the end of the mecate.

That’s exactly right. Texas wanted to annex the eastern half of New Mexico, the part east of the Rio Grande.

That part of what is now New Mexico east of the Rio Grande was traded by Texas to the US in return for assuming the embarrassing debts Texas incurred funding railroads across the state when Texas was admitted into the Union.
