Maybe he thought LSV would draft the more on brand “utter nonsense, glued together with a dash of storm, a pinch of graveyard shenanigans, and a healthy serving of draw 7s?”
Watching Luis get put in the turn one Fastbond torture sequence 3 games in a row by his own dear friend Paul is an ultimate moment for their friendship.
Ikr, I am so glad I stumbled back to the channel. I was like, "I wonder if LSV has posted any content since I stopped watching a year ago." I was shocked. Genuinely a fantastic surprise.
I absolutely LOVED the hate drafts! He 100% played the team draft how it should be played! Gaia's Cradle and Natural Order just in case, maybe throw Finale of Devastation in there as well. The P2P2 Minsc and Boo was also so damn good, plus he even got the card he would have taken, The Wandering Emperor, on the wheel. Then the same goes with the P3P3 Archon of Cruelty pick, got the Seachrome Coast on the wheel. They were both fantastic strategic hate drafts that he ended up not having to truly pay for.
@@LucianDevine Yeah, I had written this comment before I saw the Archon pick - and then I was like, woah! Really all in control now - what a stacked sideboard of everything everyone else wanted
Even without the Snuff Out, I think we're still meant to play Underground Sea in the deck. If we draw e.g. an opening hand with Mana Drain, Marsh Flats, Eagles of the North, and no other blue sources, with Underground Sea in the deck we can fetch it on turn 1, use Eagles to fetch Hallowed Fountain, and have Mana Drain up on Turn 2. Without Underground Sea we have no way to get double-blue off those cards.
Yeah, Marsh Flats alone is reason enough to play Underground Sea: Sometimes you draw the Hallowed Fountain, sometimes you want to fetch painless untapped blue.
Damn back in 2018 when I started playing cube this was THE deck. If you got JTMS, Teferi, Remand, and Snapcaster it was just gg. Crazy how much cube has changed over the years
Yup the creatures and to a certain extent the combo cards (mostly underworld breech and thassa's oracle) keep getting better while the control cards have stayed fairly the same.
@@doleod6340 The creatures also improved cards like Necromancy, Natural Order and Sneak Attack: Griselbrand is pretty much a mid-tier threat to cheat into play now when it used to be about the best thing a couple of years ago.
Such a cool deck, so many decisions to make on each turn. When to use a cantrip to bounce a creature vs leave up counters vs tap out for a Planeswalker... expertly piloted, as always, and very fun to watch.
I really enjoy watching these "traditional archetypes" (e.g. Mono W, Red aggro, UW control) more than any other videos on the channel. Thanks for the throwback!
That's what's sweet about cube, UW control is not even on the radar for most people in archetypes you go for when drafting. Yet no power or really broken cards and still dominated the field easily.
oust is one of my favorite cards that i think is underrated. its a 1 mana removal spell thats somehow incredibly brutal against bad creatures, often more so than against good creatures. triple remanding a friends lanowar elves is a great memory (for me)
Just discovered today that Paul Cheon has a Channel. The first video I found of his was of him drafting storm. The same day I find you drafting Blue White Control. What wild parallel dimension have we slipped into in 2024?
@@Bl00dSt0rm60 The point is you can get the Sea with the Marsh Flats, so the Flats get painless, untapped blue. Also there are games where you naturally draw the Hallowed Fountain, at which point the Marsh Flats can no longer get blue mana. Besides, Wasteland already has a reasonable number of targets already, all of which are higher value than the Underground Sea. All that said, it doesn't really make much difference either way, though. 🙂
Awesome seeing perhaps my fav archetype played at such a high level. Also, this reinforces my belief that Oust is being underplayed; card is great in so many situations!
Is it really not worth it playing the Underground Sea to turn the Marshflats into a U/W fetch? I know it carries the risk of any nonbasic, but I think the ability to get blue in a pinch is worth the risk of hitting a wasteland or archon. Mostly thinking for e.g. you already have Hallowed Fountain and need a third blue for Cryptic.
This Cube looks so much better than the one currently on MTGO. Just overall better card quality. Although i miss cards like Oblivion Ring, Mental Misstep, Ancestral Vision, Unsummon and Vedalken Shackles being in the Cubes. Not quite sure why those cards have been removed. Especially Oblivion Ring and Unsummon i miss. I feel like the other colors have gotten a buff and some of the UW answers have been removed. I'm sad about it lol. I like playing UW Cheon type decks.
This deck slaps! It’s so opposite to watching Lsv draft “fair” decks. This is the polar opposite of the crazy concoctions he makes usually, but felt like he was holding the control key down the entire time he played.
I saw a Jan Jansen in there. How new is that in your cube and how does it play? I have a Commander deck built around Jan and while I opted to go less combo focused and more synergy focused, I would be interested to hear your thoughts about it in cube. Let's be honest though, I would always like to hear your thoughts about MTG because I do learn quite a bit. Thanks for sharing!
If Cheon's joining the server, these videos are about to get a lot longer - as evidenced by round 1. And Paul has his own channel now, so I've got like 2.5 times the cube content to consume. I'm gonna have to start watching these on 1.25 speed
love some classic UW - is it at all possible to put the cube yall are drafting in the description or something? Hard to figure out when its your cube or alpha frog etc. Only ask because the gemstone mine you mentioned "I didnt add it" so not sure if back on alpha and someone got the 3-0 and added. Thanks for all the content!!
Is the card "eagles of the north" a reference to the Toronto Raptors? I guess it would have been rakdos if so. But every time I see that card I think of the raps
With the cantrips and mana requirements of your best card mana drain (which hopes to get snapcaster'd) and with cryptic in the deck I think that +1 island -1 plains is a pretty obvious change.
I think he was really dedicated to Blue with almost no fixing, and at that point he was already split between going white or black, not seriously considering 3-color at that point. Also, Fury gets a lot worse as just a minor splash, since you don't have as much to pitch to it. It wasn't enough to pull him away from White (though maybe enough to compete with Black if he didn't have the White), and tri-color would have been too risky with where his draft was at that point.
Nice videos. Any chance you can ever draft white, green, or red? We've seen a bunch of videos on blue control and reanimator. I know that aggro may not be your favorite deck but as an entertainer it would be interesting for those of us trying to pick up cube from you to learn about. Thanks!
Has your evaluation good mana lands gone down? I've seen you pass so many duals and fetchlands over sometimes very marginal cards. I guess there's more lands than ever, but still seems pretty different to previous years
My guess is this draft he was thinking he'd lean very heavily into 2 colors at most - with Mana Drain and Cryptic Command early, you don't want to really go into too many colors. I have seen him still pretty recently go for the more heavily splashed 4/5 color decks, too. So I'm guessing the heavy blue investment early disincentivized his normal habits.
Yeah i'm not sure where this question is coming from. Feel like LSV must be pretty ubiquitiously known to be the guy who keeps doing 5 colour soup and somehow always having good enough mana to pull it off.
It's absolutely insane to think that One Ring was the worst card in the deck. There were plenty of times where you drew it and could have used it, but there was always something better. That's the mark of an incredibly strong deck.
All the times you made mana-screwed opponents draw bad creatures was just karma paying you back for Paul having turn 1 Fastbond all 3 games in match 1.
this draft literally started with mana drain into ponder, how can you expect LSV to not go blue from there? there was also no splashing in this deck either.
Look, i know you hate not running OG art for your cube, but would it be possible for you to run the Dig Through Time art featuring the dog digging??? Do it for the doggertoes
I am not a fan of Dig Through Time and I see it as a trap. There is alot of set up for it making it a spell that can’t be cast in the first few turns. It has anti synergy with cards that do care about the graveyard such as snapcaster. Lastly It’s double blue cost is what dooms it for me. Even if you are digging at only double blue, those 2 blue pips will most likely impact the rest of your turn unless you are mono blue, digging for a hard counter spell requires 4 untapped blue. The best use of DTT is for decks running pitch free instant spells so like this deck; so yah in the last 3 years this is the best DTT deck I’ve seen but even here it was just mediocre. It’s just not worth it imo.
