Look
If you had
One shot
Or one opportunity
To release all the energy you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you abuse it
Or use it for good?
They've armed the weapon
Countdown clock is set and
J. Robert Oppenheimer is sweatin'
Eyes are red and he's nervous
Cause on the surface this is armageddon
The shock bomb, but we're set upon and threatened
And with no sound the whole Alamogordo ground
Is glowing and cowed under one smouldering cloud
He's choked and wowed, everybody's open-mouthed
And over the ground the shock front blows, kapow!
Snap back to the alchemy
Hope before tragedy
Showed with bold math that we broke the whole atom
We choked; controlled action with poles of cold cadmium coat
To go capture neutrons and slow fracture
We broke, postponed that and we chose to go fashion
A most radioactive plutonium gadget then
Fat Man and Boy and Enola goes laughin'
As Nagasaki is blown and Hiroshima's blasted
You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!
Neutrons escaping from a source radiating
Merge and start atoms shaking; they begin
To unglue toward a decreased order
Entropic force distorts em
And supercharged with loads of protons they can only go farther
Cold war grows hotter--exothermal--Colorado to Joe Stalin
Coast to coast holes; silos but there's no farmer
Toe-to-toe drama
NATO and Warszawa in co-assured trauma
The globe groans everyone knows there's no calming
So show your foes and implode your core column
Quid pro quo Castle Bravo for Tsar Bomba
And move on and leave atolls exposed to gross doses of old fallout;
Slow-to-go toxins in shoals and so though we explode them no longer
Still the proof lives on in the blue lagoon water, father
You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!
When war games hit the stage of a gluon's rage
There's a military boot on the new doc's page
We were playing in the beginning, but grew up strange
Making radar and missiles, and new bombs blazed
And we kept grinding the lensed sights for the next sniper
Best believe son it'll pay to design fighters
All the gains of science analyzed by the
Man provide plans for sarin and cyanide
And our hands are blighted by crying
Eyes when dying lands are slammed if our grants expand the fire brighter
And there's no jury there's no sublime righter
This is our fight
And these minds are all ours so protect your pia mater
Try to feed and water good, seed trust, flee dishonour
Gotta be clean being Apollo stead of Vietnam and
Lay the armour down and be the one to stand up
And lead us on the trail of Spock
We'll elevate these motley progeny
To a future in a safer spot, an irrigated plot
Homicide a way forgot
Success is a lack of military options
Failure's not
Become a lover of a great and cosmic goal
We cannot condone these terror plots
So here we go it's our shot
Feel frail or not
This is the only world and humanity that we got
You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!
You gotta make your own mind up, man. - Hudba
This song 100% should have been the closing song to the movie Oppenheimer like I kept thinking about it all along the movie 🙌🏼
yep
I don't think that any of the scientists who worked on the atomic bomb were into rap music though
I have a friend who was an aerospace engineering major in college. After a summer internship working for a big military contractor firm, they switched majors to psychology, forcing them to stay in school for another two years and derailing their entire life goals. They never talked about why, until one time after a party where just the two of us were left awake. They were pretty drunk, way more so than I had ever seen them, and I was kinda babysitting to make sure they didn't get sick. When they were starting to come down a bit I asked what was up, why binge?
They turned seriously to me and said "I killed my 2000th person today" I was like "...what?"
Turns out, the project they had been working on during that internship was a missile guidance system for a military drone. They had been keeping track of everyone killed by drone missile strikes in the years since, slowly building a body-count they felt responsible for. The fact that working in Aerospace meant keeping on building weapons, the fact that more and more people would die, is why they switched majors.
I think about that chilling conversation whenever I hear this song. They hadn't done much to help that project. A few lines of code, and fetching engineers coffee. But they still felt complicit, haunted by guilt for the rest of their life.
Many of us have less obvious connections or behaviours that cause harm to others. I'm glad your friend had a chance to rethink their priorities.
Your friend is overdramatic, for sure. If he felt that much irrational guilt over such tiny support of an aerospace program, then psychology will absolutely destroy him (especially when you are directly responsible for human lives or social impact). These people make me laugh. When a country wants to hurt/kill other people, what is he going to do? Recommend that we fight them with our words and random acts of kindness? Hug it out? Lol. Human aggression (for offense and defense) is as old as humanity, and has always been part of human and animal nature.
@@sunnysied713 And you think its a GOOD THING????
@@galacticbunny1205 Of course it's a good thing. How do you plan on protecting your countrymen or others? Please and Thank You? Humans are animals, which encroach upon one another for territory, dominance and control. Did you think humanity has transcended to a magical new state where everyone lives in peace and harmony? Look at the current Russian-Ukrainian War. Lol. Competition always breeds conflict. Humanity has war for thousands of years. Even primates have been documented to have wars that have spanned decades.
@@galacticbunny1205 It's neither good nor bad. Violence is a key part of nature.
"And we kept grinding the lensed sights for the next sniper"
As a scientist, this is the line that stabs deepest.
Definitely! That's an engineer's job
@@llamallama1509 And here's the guy who realized that it would pay to design fighters.
"Being Apollo instead of Vietnam" might be the most aspirational line.
That last stanza is honestly up there in the best lyrics I've ever heard. "Success is a lack of military options; failure's not." Incredible.
Wait I didn't get it
@@rohanrogers720 As I understand it, the point is that success means the world is so at peace that all military options are no more, when the weapons and armies have been dismantled and disbanded because they're not needed. He's saying we should use science to approach that goal, rather than fueling conflict for short-term gains. But as long as there is conflict, "a lack of military options" sounds like a failure to protect ourselves. This line claims that that idea is false, or at least that it misses the real problem.
@@jeremydavis3631 or in simpler terms: if you build an energy source, make sure it cant be used as a bomb and if you build an FTL-Drive try to make it not usable as a missile.
Succes --> Lack of milit options --->no military use for your new discovery
Failure --> no lack of military options ---> there is a military use for your new discovery
I had a closer look at the lyrics while listening to the last verse and it's as you said - just incredible. I have goosebumps.
And THAT's the proper use of a semicolon.
Nuclear physics, ethics, and rap all contained in a video. Not a fan of rap, but this is clever and impressive! A creative and innovative twist for education.
I find when it comes to rap, the beat is too often a repetative loop of some kind, and the vocals have little to no melody to follow either ..
With this I have little else in the song to focus on except the lyrics. If those lyrics can't grab my attention and thought or feelings, then I don't like the song.
Rare that a rap song like this exists that catches me that I love it.
Not only is this excellent parody, but the rap lyrics are also very well written on such a narrow and specific topic! I think Eminem himself would be impressed.
Among all the pure science song (that I adore) it’s perfect to include an appeal for responsibility and ethics. I’m moved.
Yes totally wonderful how Tim reveals his character in these words 😊
I have to say, this video is... the bomb.
24DracoAmericanus what you did there... I saw it. :)
YEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
🇰🇵haha you got bomed

"We were playing in the beginning"
The good old days where a war couldn't destroy all life(exept for bateria and insects)
Its too bad you humans went the extra mil
"Success is a lack of military options"
Brilliant, dude
I cried! Best appeal for responsibility in science I've come across.
"If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one. I am become death, the destroyer of worlds."
Oppenheimer, referencing the Bhagavad Gita.
I just saw Oppenheimer, and all through the movie I kept thinking about this great piece.
Question, did you link your version to the Eminem channel? At least I hope he feels honored with your version.
You're amazing Tim!!! I love all of your work, but this song is particularly close to my own heart, because I strongly believe in the fact that all us scientists should have a strong moral/ethical code. Science is a tool to understand, discover and build. It should never be used for death, destruction and war. Thank you for putting this out there.
Agreed
Well, if aliens invade us and try to kill us, that's one situation where science needs to be used for war and destruction.
War, war never changes.
Isn't that impossible?
@@the4spaceconstantstetraqua886 no
A lot of people seem to be hating on this or slightly confused by it. I liked it a lot. As a (not scientist/mathemtician level) pretty big nerd that enjoys darker rap and heavy metal, I thought this was pretty genious. Randomly happened across this video as well. Thanks.
Mom's speghettification!
I'm astonished... All I know is that I'm gonna have to watch this 5 more times, at least.
'Success is a lack of military options, failure's not.' this! THIS!!!!
You rocked it man, love your stuff!
I really wish you could release more of these, they are little gems.
When Trudbol throws props at you for your acappella work, that's legit!
Great memory of a time I could whole heartedly agree with the lyrics. Recent events, however, made clear that there will never be a time where all science guys are using their knwowledge responsibly. So the question becoms, who do we want to have the best science guys working for them? My vote wil be for democracies.
A parody with a serious message -- bravo!
Castle Bravo!
this is an older song of yours, still one of my favorites, and shows how we should handle science and how an individual can't know what their science will do entirely, and it really compares with what we are doing in the fact we should try to make peace instead of trying to out compet one another, especially with weapons of mass destruction, or even things like regular guns (I don't think I clearly stated my feelings and thoughts, but one should be able to formulate my main ideas)
I REALLY like this. Big Hip-Hop fan, and most science raps give up on being true to Hip-Hop or Science. this song doesn't do that at all.
CZcams's auto-captions are kind of hilarious, though not too useful.
at about 2:00 it's "drones escaping from the source 3 dating birds GoDaddy."
More topical than I wish it was right now
I cannot even fathom the amount of work that must have gone into writing these lyrics D:
So I tried to explain to my brother last week what I love about your work in general and this one in particular. I figure you do three things very well 1. choose a song that has the right sound to match the mood of the topic 2. writing parody lyrics that are both meaningful and fit the original and 3. actual performance and technology use. I then proceeded to go HOW?!?! about you putting the restlessness of this song in particular to to topic of the morality of the atomic age. Holy fuck man. The only awkward moment in this is sadly the easiest phrase to recognize "responsibility only comes once to a science guy". But I guess that is understandable considering Bill Nye.
lol i was like wow homeboy had a buzz cut back in the day. then i realized you cut it for this video to look like slim.. props man, mad respect
This is an excellent video, but how did he find so many guys who looked so much like himself?
I-I dont know... WAIT DID HE CLONE HIMSELF. Only logical way obviously
@@BipseTaco What has science done‽
@Michael Darrow I recall it's called an interrobang. This thing: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interrobang
They're just the stable states of his waveform.
The clothes are actually the amplitude of the different modes, and all of his clones are just the superposition of all solutions lol
I've posted this quite a few times in different places. I think engineers and scientists are hitting a new inflection point with machine learning, and I hope we can take this issue to heart, and make the hard moral choices coming.
Thank you Tim, as a science guy, a musician, and someone who grew up in Waterloo, you create just wonderful stuff in the best traditions of Canada, Waterloo, and the STEM fields.
"I am become death, destroyer of worlds." A powerful quote from a Hindu story quoted by Julius Robert Oppenheimer following the detonation of the Little Boy over Hiroshima.
Does that quote refer to Shiva?
Matthew Ferrie It does. The original Hindu story has Shiva speaking to a prince and in order to assert his dominance, Shiva says that quote.
ITs from the Bhagwad geeta, out holy book, not from a story.

Sorry, I am not exactly fluent, so to speak, in Hindu culture.
I love acapellascience
You, Sir, won the Internet!
This reminds me of Hayao Miazaki's beautiful anime "The Wind Rises", which is a biography of the engineer who developed the Zero fighter for Japan. He always said he just wanted to design flying machines.
That's the best loose yourself remix ever
Em needs to see this....
You are so amazing - the amount of thought and work you put into all of your videos is mind-blowing, but this one reaches an even higher level of challenging us to really think! Thank you so much for creating this!
For all those who are so preoccupied with whether or not they _could,_ that they didn't stop to think if they _should._
this is absolute marvel in all sense
I love this song, just like every other one of yours, but good lord, I just can't believe how versatile your look is! From things like "Science Style" to "William Rowan Hamilton" to "Take Exams" to this! You look like a completely different person, and you would do great acting!
Science+History+music appreciation=masterpiece
Absolutely love this! Gonna share it on my homeschooling fb page. You are an inspiration and role model for young scientists. Keep it up!
Give this man a Medal
Always liked the "Detroit accent" Tim puts on here (I mean, it's not REALLY a Detroit accent...it's more of an Eminem accent, which has elements of a Detroit accent). He does sound almost exactly like Eminem himself.
You're a champion of the world.
Came back to check if lyrics were still awesome.
Yep, still 10^97 times better than the original.
Who else had to come back and listen to this gem after watching OPPENHEIMER?
No i'm watching it before Oppenheimer existed dumbass
Great song with a great message. Hats Off!
Rap songs aren’t my tea, but there are a few I like.
Is this one guy? I'm blown away!!
How on Earth does this not have a million views yet?
Okay, you hit me hard in the feels and the guilt thought centers with this song,...THEN YOU DID ALL THOSE GOOFY DANCES AT THE END and I laughed,...and I can breath again. Too Deep. I wasn't expecting that, But you warned me. Expect Pain.
Love this !
Four years later and this even more relevant. School's should use your videos to teach kids science!
I do when I can, but I teach middle school. Most of his video's easily go beyond even high school level.
@@kylehines593 just show them "bohemian gravity" in the beginning of the term and never mention it again :D
But maybe that could help motivate a few people?
I wholeheartedly listen to this with great emotions and attention
I never thought I would like this tune. I've been blown away! Boom!
Great message!! Hope you make more vids...these are genius!
Thanks 🙏✨genius ✨I'm enjoying your creations af✨feeling super happy grateful inspired ✨💖
Absolutely mind blowing!
I always come back to listen to this again! It would be awesome if your music was available on loudr though :)
Keep up the great work Tim!
Wow serious stuff. This blew me away. Amazing lyrics!
Many layers of energy and heart-power at work here. Thank you. This piece connects with the science of love, since the drive to continue activated your writing this. Topics to delve further into: the science of denial and the science of restoration on earth. Observations in ethics (why and why not) are every bit as scientific as those in physics (what, how and sometimes why). Don't let capitalism's delineations and self-serving definitions limit your pursuits.
I love this video so much.
Keep on making these videos. They're awesome.
Eminem would be really proud
Dude you are awesome
The song is dope
My gawd this is amazing ❤
Loved it, shared it. Looking forward to any new songs you do..

I don't know if you will read this comment, but this is the most inspiring thing that I have heard in years. Thank you.
My favourite things combined in one video, eminem, science and history, thank you lol
Amazingly good and an excellent topic. Well done.
I love you, Tim Blais!

Great song and video. You are doing a great job! Good to have you back. I'm defenatly a fan :-)

NICE SOCKS!!!
I LOVE all you do...science needs ppl like you to spur new minds to thought....!
This is still my second favortie CZcams music video or all time (I must count for about 100 of its views). I'm afraid you're still slightly behind the production of Robb Cantor's "Cannibal Shia Labeouf", but keep up the great work, and that might change very soon ;)
AstroBax I definitely do not hold that against you.
+acapellascience It is a good video to be second two. :)
WAIT he isn't dead!! Shia Surprise!
but that's also an awesome first place. :)
