The point of no return. Fulgrim falls. In his final moment of sanity after he strikes down his brother, Ferrus Manus, he realizes what he has done before finally damning himself to oblivion. A very powerful moment.
This book, and this art from Disharmonia inspired me when I wrote the tune for Fulgrim, so it was an obvious choice for a memories episode.

Fulgrim was wasted truly. He should have stayed in the painting until modern 40k. Coming out to see the demon that has taken his identity and his legion fallen. Returning to guiliman begging for a chance at redemption and making it his goal to purge his sons. Eventually gaining trust as he becomes a zealot in purging all of his former legion and the demon that destroyed him. All in the name of the brother he killed

There is a possibility of redamation in 40k. His uncorrupted clone. There are some theories that Fulgrim's soul took the clone as a vassal.
Loyalist Fulgrim returning and see current Guiliman...god dammit, that's a brilliant idea man, there is more drama and tension then Lion returning in the current timeline.
For me, his fall was very ...forced... I would not dare to say is a bad writing, maybe rushed? idk, it wasn't plausible for me.

I honestly imagined this. Say ,with more competent writing, with the generation of the great rift the painting simply breaks down due to warp surges and releases Fulgrim from the painting while a daemon doppelganger like you mentioned takes his name and form and utterly perverts his legion beyond redemption, we would see a Fulgrim utterly shamed and broken to the point of not seeking redemption, but vengeance. One who accepted his fate that he is irredeemable and instead shunning everything that made him, shaving his head and wearing the blackest of black armors with no markings in shame of what he did from killing his closest brother Ferrus and betraying his Father due to his weak will. A Manus that is so single minded and fatalistic at destroying his legion that would make the dark angels in their pursuit to hunt every member of the unfallen look petty compared to him. Imagine how a mistrustful Guilliman and an indifferent, even uncaring Fulgrim would interact with each other. Fulgrim knows that he can never gain back the trust or even acceptance of anyone he betrayed so he doesn't even bother, especially the Iron Hands, which he would be more than happy to submit himself to them and asking them to either end him or having him seek and destroy every one of his own children as pennance.

Clone Fulgrim was already stated to be just as bad as the original. Fabius Bile recognized the same selfishness and vanity in him, he was alive for no more than a month and he had already betrayed his creator's wishes. I say good riddance, better for him to collect dust in the necron museum.

Retcons have happened before. They could say that the "real fulgrim" was just another daemon or fragments of Fulgrim's mind. Split into pieces by the Daemons who torment him with his insecurities, fears, desires, etc. His return, his true return, could be him fighting his way out of the torturous realm he was trapped in. Similar to the knight that made his way through Slannesh's realm.

Fulgrim came closer to perfection than any other primarch. You seem to forget everything the man did before his fall. He was the literal Renaissance man of the primarchs. An artist, a diplomat, a warrior a general, he conqured world's without having to use force or the threat of force. He turned his home planet from a factory world into a place of art and culture. He played a big role in teaching curze not to be such a demented waste of space and inspired not only his legion but the emperor so much that he gave the right to use his PERSONAL symbol to the third legion and only the third legion. So yeah fulgrim definitely understood perfection and the path to it.

I like to think that Fulgrim escaped the corners of his mind, discovered the clone body when in the warp, and inhabited it as soon as he could, hence why the clone was perfect, and why the clones of the other Primarchs failed, they were either still alive, or hadn’t been cloned yet, obviously Horus had no soul to return to a body, Angron has no reason to want to leave, nor has he been cloned as far as I’m aware, same with most the daemon Primarchs except Magnus, and his soul is shattered
Sanguinius is said to still reside in the warp, so a clone of him made from his stolen DNA could reintroduce him into the series
As for Manus, the status of his soul is likely the same as Sanguinius, only either he wasn’t able to return when his clones were being made, or that WAS Ferrus who Fulgrim kept repeatedly killing and reviving to try to turn to chaos, and Ferrus being Ferrus, he never did turn, and therefore the “clones” were considered “failures”
I think in the end times we’ll get roughly an even number of Primarchs on both sides, but we won’t see the end times for another few decades yet minimum

as clone fulgrim is taken in chains by the ultramarines,to guilaman, guilaman sees the clone. a man of androgenous beauty, but one of unbelievable sorrow, what guilaman would normaly recognize as glee, snark or even narcisim, was a broken and somber man, with literally no will to live.
"my lord, what shall we do with him?"
    guilaman thought but then spoke
    "leave us."
the ultramarines nod leaving guilaman and clonegrim there. clonegrim is on his knees,no weapons or even really good armor. clonegrim was at guilamans mercy. before guilaman got up,the clone spoke
"if you mean to kill me,i welcome it over what i now live with...what i still live with regarding ferrus. i cant even fight back anyway..."
the clone was on the verge of tears. guilaman knew fulgrim was a traitor. but for his clone? no. this clone was the true fulgrim, not the creature in his likeness. guilaman offered fulgrim a hand
"you have no idea what it means for you to come back,Brother. rylanor would be overjoyed to see you were he here."
fulgrim was surprised. but he was still slumped on the ground,he wouldn't accept it. he couldn't accept someone could truely be that level of merciful
"i know thats a lie roboute. and you know it. save the gloating and end it already with fathers blade."
guilaman grabbed the emperors blade, and set it down
"if you truely dont believe me,then ask the emperor yourself."
the sword of the emperor glowed bright in fulgrims presence, and then....a legion of the dammed appeared to him. one in mastercrafted armor, with hands of silverish iron. with a helmet. fulgrim looked horrified
    "ferrus...? how..."
"fathers power. he now writhes in pain as guilaman is the only one here. if you can not live with yourself, then at least allow vengeance for the creature in your likeness. the ancient awaits... brother."
the lord of the iron hands embraced the somber pheonix, feeling warmth and mercy wash over the primarch clone. ferrus disipeared....and clonegrim rose
    "thank you....ferrus..."
at last the pheonixs emotions welled out. tears overflowed as his sorrow was as clear as a cloudless sky.....

What I want for Clonegrim's (GW please do this) eventual return to the main setting is that he saves Guilliman from his Daemon self, telling DaemonGrim "I reject you now and always!" quoting Rylanor as DaemonGrim flinches for a second. A second is all Clonegrim needs as he banishes DaemonGrim, watching as DaemonGrim walllows in pain and frustration as he fades away back into the clutches of the Warp. Guilliman is in utter disbelief of what transpired in mere moments, Fulgrim does not know what to say, should he say "I am sorry..." or "It has been too long brother..." ? Tears begin to form in Fulgrim's face as he sees Roboute Guilliman's face that showed his old but present hatred from his treachery thousands of years ago, a face that does not acknowledge a brother but a foe. Fulgrim decides to walk away, hiding again but Guilliman also in tears hugs Fulgrim. Saying "Oh my dear brother, how could you have left us?", leaving Fulgrim bursting in tears as he hugs Guilliman tightly, then BAM! Some Ultramarines spot Guilliman in tears and the plot goes on.

Don't really like that backtracking vilain thing. If you write a vilain, write a vilain filled with rage and anger, not by guilt and sorrow, really don't make those characters justice.
Star wars did it well with Darth Vader, you know what brought him down his path, he is spiteful and ugly, in the end only his son got him remorceful.
Especially in the universe of warhammer, to make immortal demi godd cry like little girls is weird to me

I don't like that you find any wrong in this.

@@PlayNiceFolks His reasoning is ignorant, Fulgrim joined the traitors because of his own pride egged on by his demon sword. So when he killed Ferrus a person who was both his best friend and brother he realized the grave mistake he had made and went into despair. Falling to chaos to escape the agony of sorrow he dug for himself. To say characters can’t have complex emotions and cry because “Demi god don’t cry” is silly and really one demential. God we already have Angron as the pissed one.
