"Nevis slinkojot un pūstot" (Neither lazing nor decaying) is a Latvian men's choir song written by Juris Alunāns, performed at the Fifth General Latvian Song Festival in 1910. The melody is composed by Andrejs Jurjāns.
The poem was published in 1860 in a collection "Sēta, Daba, Pasaule", inspired and translated from the original one by a Czech writer František Ladislav Čelakovský.

Respect to Latvian Legions, from Germany and Switzerland
The Legion was part of the SS. They forcefully conscripted Latvians under the threat of death.
You basically said you respect the Nazis who tried to kill us. Respect should go to the Riflemen and the forest brothers who fought for our independence.
The Legion deserves no respect. They enslaved Latvians for their war just as the teutonic order had done centuries prior
Almost got chosen as anthem. Would have been better choice.
@Jānis Pirms lēmuma pieņemšanas sabiedrībā noritējusi diskusija arī par citiem himnas variantiem: konkurentes bijušas Jurjānu Andreja “Nevis slinkojot un pūstot”, “Dievs, dod mūsu tēvu zemei” un Alfrēda Kalniņa “Latvju himna - 1917” (“Mēs gribam būt kungi mūsu dzimtajā zemē”). 25.09.1928. Ministru kabinets (MK) izsludināja noteikumus par valsts himnu, kas vēlreiz apstiprināja par himnu “Dievs, svētī Latviju!”.
Vēlāk presē noritējušas diskusijas par iespējamu himnas maiņu (šim statusam ieteikta arī Jāņa Mediņa “Tev mūžam dzīvot, Latvija!”, Jāņa Kalniņa “Lai līgo lepna dziesma” un Jāņa Norviļa “Svēts mantojums”), tomēr lēmums par to netika pieņemts
