I am in zone 6 and I just put the seed without soaking right into my raised bed and a month later I have nasturtiums! I love that these plants are so easy.. I walk around with seeds in my purse to randomly plant them because they are so pretty, lol .. I love the empress of India ones best!

Nasturtiums actually thrive from neglect and poor soil conditions. They do well in native nd clay soils and reseed very easily every year. The more nutrients you give, the more leaves and less flowers

We just grew nasturtiums for the first time this year; we planted them right in our cucumber beds. We're very pleased with them; they are still producing a few blooms now in the heat of August in Tennessee. Through the late spring and early-mid-summer they were just covered with blooms and they haven't required any unusal care. No troubles with pests or disease, just a fantastic, beautiful low-maintenence plant. We'll plant a lot more next year!

I grew Nasturtium from seed for the first time this year and only got 3 seedlings from a packet of about 15 seeds, despite soaking them in water before planting and using poor soil (I heard from other sources this is better) so I'm impressed you got most of yours to germinate! That variegated variety is really pretty, too! I planted the Empress of India variety.

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  Před 2 lety +5

@Alison Farquhar, Well, it's actually not your fault at all that you got only 3 seedlings out of 15 seeds. Many times, sellers don't provide the fresh seeds and because of that we get very low germination rate. Thank you very much for your words and I hope your plants would do GREAT in coming days, Wish you all the BEST :-)

@Sheamini Vevekanantham, Thank you SOOOOOOOOOO much for your words, I truly appreciate it :-)
For planting Rose plants on ground, you can do these things (giving an example of an area of 4 feet length X 2 fee width) -
      1. You can plant 2-3 Rose plants easily in that area but 2 would be much better
      2. Add sufficient amount of either Vermicompost, Compost or composted cow dung manure. Just turn the soil a bit and then mix them with the soil properly (like we mix well everything while preparing any potting soil mix to grow in container) Adding 3-5 kgs would be more than enough but if the soil is too hard, you would need to add other organic matters such as dried leaves etc. Anyway, after adding any compost or cow dung manure, the soil would become soft anyway.
      3. Make sure the place gets at least 5-6 hours of direct sun
      4. Make holes deep enough for the root ball of the plants 4. Plant the Rose plants and then water the. You are done and from next onwards, if you fertilize them once in 3-4 months, it would be more than enough.
I already have videos about the fertilizers for Rose plants. But since you are growing them in ground, you can definitely increase the amount of fertilizers and please select the organic solution.
Here are the two videos - Chemical + Organic Fertilizers - czcams.com/video/u4TCSVYq4FU/video.html Organic fertilizer - czcams.com/video/pHka4FZTqUE/video.html Hope that helps and plz let me know if you have any questions, thank you :-)

What the name of the nasturtium plant that you have, it very pretty. I have
NASTURTIUM - TOM THUMB - Empress of India. They are very nice to eat in salads, can't wait for mine to start growing again.

@Dev Creations, That's really great to know and I am glad for you that they are blooming well :-) Sometimes, plants behave weirdly. I mean, they don't do well when we take too much care but do well when we neglect them..:D

@Dev Creations, Sorry to know about that. I can understand how it feels when a plant die :-( Look like, your plants were affected by Die back disease - one popular fungal disease mostly found on Roses. Need to use fungicide. At this time of the year, many plants get fungal attack and we need to use fungicide. Good to know at least one Gerbera is surviving. I love nasturtiums and I plant them every year to put in my salad’s to eat. But I live in Texas where it gets really hot how do I prevent them from dying so early?

    • @helengren9349

Vermiculate in soil will keep moisture longer. Do not use pots with holes in the bottom. Use one with holes on the side bit higher up, so there is some water left in the bottom-make one your self of pot without holes. Put also growel in the bottom for good airing of roots. Use pots with Light colors. Dark color makes pot very hot. Good luck.

@Leslee Williams, Just Googled and I can see that current temp in Texas is somewhat high..Unfortunately, they don't like High Temp :-( But still, you can protect them by limiting the direct sun exposure. This is the same thing I do whenever I want my Winter flowering plants to extend their blooming period. So, you can just provide them 2-3 hours of morning sunlight and then bright light for the rest of the day. I hope it works for you as well :-)
You got one reply from Helen Gren. @Helen Gren, really thank you for taking time to reply. But, for any container plant, I really don't recommend to use a pot where there is not a single drainage whole. Roots of any plants don't want to sit in water unless we are not growing them hydroponically. Hydroponic is totally a different thing. But, I am 100% agree with your opinion about using pots with light colors. Dark color makes pot very hot and it's better to avoid them.
Thank you once again to both of you and take care :-)

Nasturtium originates from hot countries, so no problem if it gets hot...From the link: "well-drained soil in full sun. They can grow in partial shade, but they will not bloom as well."
Important to add vermiculate or perlit in soil too keep it most. Self watering pots could be very helpful If it gets very hot & makes it easier for You, so You don't have to run often with water can or moving plants to avoid full sun - it is hot in brightlight as well. There are vids on yt how You can make one, your self. Good luck👍🌱🥀. " Nasturtium, from any of various annual plants of the genus Tropaeolum, in the family Tropaeolaceae, native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America and introduced into other regions as cultivated garden plants."

@@GardeningUpbeat Thank You for Your answer. I didn't ment hydroponic - I mentioned soil in my answer. I have described drainage wholes on the side of the pot, so there is few centimeters of water as little reservoire in the bottom as well with Leca. If too much water it will be pouring out on the side, doesn't stay in pot and do not runs straight away trough the holes in the bottom...all of the best 🙏 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expanded_clay_aggregate

I skipped the soaking last time and so far after 14 days only 1/8 sprouted. I will try again with soaking first.
