I'm Canadian french and I can say his french is very good. I love how he's using many adjectives with such ease and how he humbly asked what was the word ''adopted'' in french. I'm curious to know how he came to learn the language. It's pretty amazing and I'd love to meet him just to hear him answer me in my native language (which I'm very fond of, of course :P). By the way, he's even fluent in Spanish! He's so brilliant that it just turns me on so much. xD
He spent some time in Paris, 3 years, I think, in a theater company... That's how he can speak such a good french :) (and I'm french, I can say too that he speaks amazingly well, but a lot of british people do speak french...)
Beneich Juliette I don't think he lived in Paris for any lengthy time aside from touring Europe with a theater co. His french is good cause he attended very prestegious schools where you must have excellent marks and second language proficiency by age 13 just to be competative with other applicants. I think he said he started learning french at school as early as 10 years old, and then at Eton was given a lot of language (french) courses including day trips to France. I think Eton graduates are expected to be proficient in at least a second language, historically french. In addition Tom got into Cambridge so again he'd had to show second language proficiency. I don't know if he continued studying french, but he majored in the Classics and studied Latin and ancient Greek. BTW he's pretty decent at Spanish too. Tom has said he loves languages, and that he even thought about studying linguistics at university. Education aside, Tom is what you call a student of life or of the world. Where ever he goes he really tries to learn the language. He's not afraid to speak a language just cause he hasn't studied it either. You can see him proccessing his linguistic knowlegde to figure out foreign words or prases. It's very admirable. Which is why so many people around the world love him cause there's no better way to win people over than to learn their language.
Thanks for these informations, it's very interesting :) It actually inspires me to do the same. I should be more like that but I'm such a perfectionist. I have this idea that being completely fluent is what matters the most but in fact knowing a bit of every language isn't a bad thing. It can open so many doors. There's only English that's pretty important to know for obvious reasons. :P
Jessica Laporte Yes, I know what you mean about being a perfectionist. One thing I'm really trying to learn from Tom, is to just do the best you can and just go FORWARD. Perfect or Not! He has perfectionist tendancies too, but he doesn't let himself get stuck in them. I mean he works really really hard, but at some point (he) you have to have some faith & enjoy the experience.

Bon après, franchement, arriver à parler dans une langue étrangère avec un accent de natif, c'est quasiment impossible. Même Viggo Mortensen, qui parle très très bien français et a une prononciation presque impeccable, n'était pas à 100% crédible en tant que Français dans l'adaptation de Camus (Loin des Hommes). Il y a peut-être Diane Kruger qui peut faire ça... Alessandra Martines aussi (mais quand on le sait, on entend un peu qu'elle est italienne). Je n'en connais pas beaucoup d'autres.
