Thank you for that comparison. What I figured out today is an important point: With the XC40 you have roof rails for a roof rack. There is no possibility for that with the EX30 or C40. I needed this for skis or boats etc. - I share the opinion from Kris: C40 has the best design.

An efficiency comparison (wh/km) would be helpful. It's an important part of the performance matrix (perhaps the most important part), and I haven't seen any reviewers mention it yet.
15,7 vs 16,7 but I guess that on motoways, the difference will be much bigger since aerodynamics is better on EX30 (better drag coeff and smaller front area). So the range on motorways could be the same...

The EX 30 is very impressive. When the space is enough, it is currently the best choice. ID.3 go home. Great performance for a low price. Android automotive with Google Maps is really great.I would go wit it if I would not already have a Polestar 2😊. I'm really looking forward for real world tests.
Thinking the same. The 69kWh is in a sweet spot left out by VW between 58 and 77kWh.
Just wondering that rear passenger seats - seems like it’s smaller than polestar 2?
I have an XC40 and an ID.3. A few things I don’t like with the ID.3, but I think the internal space, especially for back seat passengers, looks worse in the EX30 than the ID.3. Too large hood for a city car.

Ive been driving the XC40 Recharge for 2 months and fell in love with it from day one. It has a modern a s robust look. The XC30 is more on the sleeker side with a better infotainment system. The XC40 has such a premium interior, eapecially on charcoal black.
I love it except it needs at least a head up display and rails rack on top very important and even basic
I have ordered a EX30. Good performance, stylish, modern interior and great value for money. I like that it strips out all the unnecessary things that you pay a fortune for these days. We live in London so the size is a plus for us and I can’t imagine we have have adults in the back that often. No brainier to me. I was always put off by the old fashioned interiors and bulky exteriors of the older Volvos. This is a game changer in design language

A great looking small SUV which would have been on our list for our first EV but no driver display is a deal breaker for me. It's simply not safe to keep having to look at a tablet instead of the road ahead. We will be looking for a used facelift Kona instead.
Thank you Kris for the excellent comparison! Could you please comment on the comfort of the front seats on EX30 and how it compares with XC40? I suffer from a chronic lower back issue, so it is an important factor for me especially on long trips. I have heard that the seats of EX30 are not the best out there, especially on the passenger side. Is that true? Thanks!
You'd need to get the Ultra as that is the only trim that has electronic seat controls.
Our Family 1st car is v60cc my16 and I have allready ordered and goong to swap MY24 C40 twin ultimate and love to change allso my wife car to ex30 twin. Hopefully asap. That would be a good combination for us.

I have an 8 year old XC60 from brand new and am looking for what will probably be our last car at some point in the next two years. And it is exactly down to these two cars and I still can't make up my mind. I am a big chap so am pulled to the XC40, we can no longer afford to stay with the XC60 size. Something new / better might crop up in two years. Had quashqai before XC60. aaaargh.
Yes. This is a smal dilemma. I have a 2023 Xc40 p6 standard range (69kwh) today. And i have orderd the Ex30 performance.... And im going back and fort on what i actually want... 🤔 🤔
Giving up some things going from the Xc40, wil the pros outway the cons?
No armrest in the back, no cupholders in the back.. Is actually a big deal for me, as my daughter has no place to put her drink, or icecream....
No driver display, May or May not work, depends on the implementation...
The smaler rear Seat is not so much an issue, as noone other then my daughter sits there anyway...
But the smaler boot, May be a problem..

Awd, and slightly more range is absoluttly a plus. And the mos yellow is a breath of fresh air. Althoug i do find the Jupiter colour (now called bright dusk) rather Nice 😁🤔

I think an updated XC 40 (EX 40?) or EX 60 will hit the sweet spot after newer battery tech is available.
Don’t think that will happen, the line up will probably be EX30, EX60 and the EX90

I have to say that I was surprised that the EX30 had such little room in the rear - my ID.3 is like the Tardis and had tonnes of room in the rear.
I've not heard anything about a HUD for the EX30 - is that an option?
No apparently not and having an ID3 the rear legroom is one thing putting us off. The ID3 also has rear armrest and ski flap.
I think the EX30 has a similar if not larger funk (around 40L) than XC40. At least in videos it doesn't seem to be 7L which would be absolutely tiny
Nope, it’s only 7 liters …
In practice, I’ve opened the frunk in my XC40 maybe 4 times in a year (once to refill the wiper fluid). I keep my charging cable there for emergencies as my home charger has a cable.
I think that Volvo made a big mistake by not including a Head-Up-Display, not even as an option in Ultimate. This shows that they haven´t considered people with bifocal glasses, like myself, who will need to turn their heads to be able to focus on the center screen. I.e its not possible for me to focus and read from the center display with just a quick eye movement - very bad choice in my opinion and a dealbreaker for me.
Otherwise, I´m really impressed but would have preferred to have more distinct color choices.
When I configured my EX30 RWD + large battery, I was sitting at $47K. The updated XC40 with RWD + larger battery feels like a better value.
In Sweden this car is too expensive. the Core version goes for 429 000 SEK ($39k) and the Ultra for 560 00 SEK ($52k) Crazy prices compared to competitors

I like the interior of the XC40 a lot more. I need buttons, I can't deal with more touchscreens. Also, that squarish steering wheel is just odd.

Looks very similar in size to my e-Golf. I also have XC40 Recharge and agree there is more rear legroom in that car. Is rear legroom in EX30 different than mk7 e-Golf?
Only the top of the range EX30 has a heat pump. It is not an optional extra on other models. In Northern Europe a heat pump is a must. That is the wrong decision surely.
With all due respect, not everybody is waiting for the infotainment screens to get larger and larger. XC40 infotainment still does fine, especially since you still have buttons for essential features that you don't need the screen space for. Tbh I hope Volvo gets some backlash for not including a driver's display in the EX30 and fits one in an update. Reason for me not to buy one. I'd rather take the Polestar 2 or look at the new Ford Explorer that looks mighty fine

Have you considered the Hyundai 2023 Kona as an alternative? And if so can I ask what was your opinion - if whip lash performance is not top of your list seems to me the new Kona is worth consideration. Or am I missing something?
My main issue with new model volvos is privacy. Collecting data on your driving, your face, name, address, routes etc. Cameras recording everything.
Volvo doesn’t collect data like that. Google keeps a record of places for finding locations as favourites, and storing your home or work address is optional. You can put a limit on that history to 3 months, but other than info for places I’ve visited popping upon the map for directions, I haven’t noticed any targeted advertising. The camera in the car is purely for drowsiness, and the cameras outside don’t record data to be sent to the mother ship, merely parking proximity. On the other hand, walk into most public buildings and you are recorded. Use a phone and your position is calculated.
As long as they don't pass that information to my wife, I will be fine.
I'm in China, as a volvo fan, in order to replace my Volvo C30, I spent one year to test driving volvo C40 recharge, XC40 recharge, Polestar 2, zeekr X, and finally I bought the Smart #3.
I hope you can refer to my experience. C40R/XC40R/Polestar 2 are EVs modified on the basis of gasoline vehicles（CMA architecture）. After you test Zeekr/smart and EX30 with a new EV architecture design, you will think that C40R/XC40R/Polestar 2 are not worth buying. In China, the poor sales figures for the aforementioned models vindicated my judgment.
If you think that the XC40R/C40R has some features that appeal to you, I suggest you wait for a while and wait until they are replaced (new SEA architecture) before buying.

EX 30 looks so mutch nicer from the front. C40 with same look should be my choise. Maby the next c40 will be more like the EX30, i hope that.
I think they will fail with ex30 mainly because of privacy concerns and no display behind steering wheel. At least that is what put me off because I planned to purchase it. Looking now into MG brand as they have also cool looking EV with better price tag. Sadly I like Volvo and I own xc40 plug in hybrid which I love as a main car and just was looking for a second city car, but definitely will not buy ex30

3:49 you should have compare EX30 dimensions with its sisters cars the smart #1 and Zeekr X. They are from the same platform but they don’t suffer from tight legroom, quite the opposite.

My opinion: EX30 and if you need more space or range buy a Tesla. XC40 is old school tech even though it got the drivetrain upgrade recently.
Volvo and Polestar... North America Charging Standard... PLEASE!!! make the change now before shipping EX90, EX30 and Polestar 3 & 4... Less complicated than adapters and retrofit... Stay safe, Tim

The LOGIC : No use to talk about safety if there is no head up display
Some countries have government incentives for electric cars, some times over $10K. EX30 is chinese made so it does not qualify. Thus more expensive than the XC40. It is Smart car which did not have a good reputation.

WE have a Model Y and absolutely love it. And one of the advantages here in the US is being able to utilize the wonderful Tesla Superchargers. We also have an 5 cyl XC60 and will be looking to replace it in a couple of years. If Volvo would adopt Tesla's NACS charging ports and come to an agreement with Tesla like Ford and GM, this EX30 would certainly be in the running for our next car. Kyle Connor and Tom Moloughney were at Milano at this unveiling and talked to Volvo representatives about this possibility and came away with the impression that this was being considered. Do it Volvo! The CCS charging infrastructure in the US stinks.
@alyssa vasquez My gasoline 2015.5 XC60 is one of the best cars I've ever owned. It's never had a repair. About 55,000 miles.
Just get the adapter and it works fine. I do expect Volvo to move to NACS in the US market. Interesting over here UK/Europe Tesla chargers all have CCS ! So the S needs an adapter. Its no huge issue.
@@ians3328 I have a CCS-1 to NACS adapter and it's a monster. My wife can hardly handle it and it's not easy for me. I really don't want a NACS to CCS either. Just give me a NACS port, Volvo.
@@777Outrigger I think it is inevitable that USA will end up with the Tesla connector. Especially if they open all the chargers.
Whilst over in Europe/UK we will stick with CCS as even Tesla over here has CCS

@@ians3328 Thanks. Two of our biggest charging providers EVGo and ChargePoint have said they will have NACS charging plugs in the future. Electrify America hasn't said anything yet, but they will be forced to do so as well, I have no doubt.

Looks like a really nice little car from Volvo, but stupid not to have a driver display.
Then it is unlikely that the Performance model does 0-100km/h in 3.6s with 20hp more and about 200kg lighter than the XC40 which does the same sprint in 4.9s!
And how can the Extended range be 0.4s faster than the variant with the small battery when they have the same number of hp and weigh basically the same, 3kg to the Extended range's advantage.

Me too. It will be interesting to see if the rear seat space is a deal-breaker in North America. I wonder if our old-fashioned centre tunnel would help give the car more leg room. I think packaging the batteries in the centre and under the seats makes things more comfortable - a centre rear seat in a small car is a bit of a waste. If you need seating for five, perhaps you need a bigger vehicle. That said, lovely looking car and I hope it’s very successful.

@@SS-yw7vo With respect, I have a car with seating for five that is 20cm longer. The EX30 is aimed at younger buyers who are often taller than me (179cm). If they have small children, they will need car seats, so the middle seat really is a non-starter, being too narrow to be practical. I learned to drive in a mk. 1 Mini in the UK, so I do know a bit about small cars.

Loved this vehicle until I learned the battery chemistry is essentially a time bomb, NMC is highly prone to combustion. Its insane to risk parking this in a garage. Not to mention the battery longevity is about 6 x less than is LFP equivalent.
