I just got the same SL5 in Blue, and I've been loving it. Originally bought a Domane SL5 thinking I would like the "more comfortable" ride, but I found the bike too sluggish overall. The shop let me exchange it for the Emonda, and I'm super glad I did. This is my first road bike, and it's been a super fun journey choosing it.
VERY HELPFUL!!! I got into biking 2 years ago and I am doing 25-75 miles a ride. i looked at this bike yesterday and was concerned that it seemed heavier than most bikes I looked at. I really like riding the hills and thought that when the salesman told me not to be concerned about the weight on the hills he was not being truthful. Your video gave me the answer I was looking for. thank you very much
Emonda sl5 is an amazing bike ! i use it in mountain region in France and i have been climb 35000m D+ with it 💪and the year is not finish 🤣 i love Trek for her design and reliable
The seat mast is Trek's lightest carbon offering; I believe it's called the SL seat mast. From what I gather, there are two carbon and one aluminum model. The seat mast with the anodized red fitting is the SL model. I have the same bike. It's pretty amazing. I immediately swapped wheel sets to the Aeolus pro37; I can recommend them. They have good internal/external width, that's optimized for 28c tires, and are ~1550g.
After upgrading my SL5 with the 2021 Zipp 303 Firecrest and Schwalbe Pro One TLE 30 mm, the bike is now considerably lighter and faster; the ride feels very energetic but also super smooth. This was an expensive upgrade but well worth it!
No issues. Perfect fit. The Emonda has plenty of tire clearance - any 30 mm tires would be fine. The Schwalbe Pro One TLE 30 mm is a good choice for the Zipp’s new hookless rim design and a particularly good fit with the new 303 Firecrest because this wheelset is wide (30 mm external width), making the rim-to-tire transition smooth and aero. I highly recommend this combo.
The free hub is loud. I initially wasn’t sure I would like that but, I must say, it grew on me quite a bit. I freaking love the sound! As to the quality of the hubs, I don’t have any issues but I can’t say I know enough about hubs. I am super happy with this wheelset - not cheap but certainly worth the investment.
@@tts8907 greatly thanks for all of that information! Really glad to hear the 30 mm externals fit Just purchased Roval Terra CL’s (comes with DT 350s with 36 poe, upgradeable to 54 poe), external 30mm, approx 1,400 gram set. Very similar stats to those 303’s. Overall tire/rim shape is a good point; might bump up my tire size from 28mm to 30mm for help with some aero benefits.
I got the same SL5 3 weeks ago. Now I am loving it after I dumped the stock wheels, tires and saddle. I mean the stock SL5 getting you into a great bike, but to make it good you need some upgrades. Now I am using my giant SLR 1 wheels with Gp 5000 tires.
I like the look of the emonda, but if I bought one i would consider it a downgrade from my 2016 Caad12. Your friend sounds like he’s trying to justify buying a slower accelerating, heavier bike. Weight matters on steep hills and if the rider cannot hold an aero position on an aero bike then there’s no benefit to owning one as the position of the rider will have a greater effect than simply the frame.
I believe Trek made this bike heavy because of the aero tube shaping and enhanced ride quality. It's a fair trade-off IMO. If you aren't using the bike to race, then who cares if the frame is 800-1k grams heavier. Change the wheels, bar and stem to carbon and it drops +/-1k grams.
Has anyone changed out the tires on the Emonda from 28m to 25mm? Was there any affect on speed or comfort? Or was it hardly noticeable on just a 3mm tire change?
I have that same Handlebar and was worried about issues so I bought a second barstem....the second set is just collecting dust as I have had zero issues with the set on the bike.
I have mine tilted forward slightly due to a hip impingement. Along with shorter cranks, it makes the difference between being able to ride with comfort and not being injured after lots of miles. It may not be ideal for most but makes a huge difference for me, could be the same for him
Can someone explain why loud hubs are seen as a good thing? Sound indicates energy transfer... in this case through friction. Which would result in lost power/momentum. Or am I missing something?
Yes you are correct. Quieter hubs are faster and efficient, but I just think people associate loud hubs with being cooler/faster Similar to how sport cars are loud?? Smth like that
@@pattnwia thanks! I thought I may have been missing something in the tech. A friend of mine mentioned that there is a safety element with them on bike paths - kind of like motorcycles on the roads - "loud pipes save lives"
Quick question, is it worth buying the sl5 with 105 group set then upgrade the wheelset, or buy the sl6 pro disc, that comes with ultegra with carbon wheelset, the wheelset I am thinking of buying is some Chinese ones called ICAN
Hey Kyo, Great question So the price difference between the SL6 and the SL5 is around $1500 CAD. So depending on the price of the wheelset, you may save a bit of money or come close to the same price as the SL6 Pro. Which in that case I would probably just go for the SL6 Pro, because it does have some upgrades over the SL5, such as the groupset, carbon seatmast, better handlebar/stem. Hope that helps :) PS i also like the color of the SL6 more
