In this video I would like to address some questions I get asked quite often - the main question is what kind of gear do I need to paint with watercolor out of doors?
A good rule is it should be light and minimal until you feel a need to get larger

Amazing!
Engineering and creativity blended in the right way 😊
Many thx Partha -
Dear Sir! Everything is very handful and practical. My most favorite part of your equipment is the shelf. When you are far away from your home don't forget to take with yourself enough food and water ;)
Welcome back Mr Tucker. Was looking forward to your videos. Here's to a new string of beautiful watercolor videos.
Thank you for the kind words - I will try to post more....on painting outdoors with watercolor. full length lessons available here www.gumroad.com/garytuckerartist
So fun to see you in this video Gary!
Thank you for the most useful guide on equipment I have seen for novice plein air painter.
Fabulous Gary - I can see a film production career in the offing! Great information and so practical. Thanks so much.
Happy to see you back on CZcams! 🙏
Thank you for your videos. They are among the most instructive on youtube on how to do loose watercolor.
Ken - very kind of you!
So happy to see you back Gary. I’ve missed my favourite art tutor. That picture is breathtaking. I’ve never been very comfortable with plein air painting and have done just quick sketches in my son's garden. I should really try a proper painting now. The view finder is a good idea as I’m easily confused by the abundance of light, shadow and greenery around me. Thank you and welcome back.
Thanks Barbara - I hope you find time to venture more out doors - a couple of like minded friends never hurt :) I find it so invigorating - which is why I am encouraging everyone to try :)
And the painting..beautiful .like always👍👍👍
Hello Mr.Tucker, nice to hear from you. Great to see you in a video with a bit slapstick...funny. Greetings from Buster Keaton. The door is also great...naturely.
Ingo
BIG fan of Buster Keaton!!! hope all is well
Hello Mr. Tucker,
I allways like your Watercolors very much. We have just returned from a holiday in Cinque Terre - Italy.
You should be able to perform your wonderful painting talent there someday.
There are many interesting topics there.
Kind regards and God Bless,
Sjef Wagemakers
The Netherlands
Thanks Gary - I can see a film production career looming! Great information and so practical.
Ha ha Buster Keaton was my hero
Nice to see you back. I was hoping your absence was not because of COVID. Thank you for the new video. It’s good to see you again!
thx Angel - covid has pushed me into teaching on line more which takes time away form making content for CZcams
you can see what I have been up too www.gumroad.com/garytuckerartist
LOL...looked like fun. Happened upon your youtube tutorials and haven't stopped watching since. After watching some of your shadows tutorials I got brave (a learner) and put dark shadows and overhanging branch into a painting and really like the impact. I had shadows across a road but these were too wishy-washy and uniform. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge - really does help. 😊
I'm learning so much from you and Laura G Young. Awesome tutorials. Thanks!
So glad!
Great fun to watch!
Fantastic! Fun to watch & thank you for the tips.
Thanks David - I am happy you enjoyed it!

Thanks Gary. The result is just what I aspire to! As I’ve watched this video so many times, and have so many unanswered questions, I’ve love to see it at normal speed. The colours are perfect in the finished work and so dark when applied!
Great! Bold strokes and the shadow unifies everything, simple and effective!
thank you !! I am happy you appreciate the brush play
Simplemente GENIAL !!!

Thank you Doug - I hope you can go some Plein air painting this summer - so far the weather has cooperated up here in New England
I love your style.
Many thanks
@@GaryTuckerArtist More precisely I admire how deliberate you abstract from the object and reduce details while maintaining or even exxaggerating the mood of the scene through lighting and coulours.
I dabble a tiny bit with painting but besides lacking the skill-practice to paint the lines exactly as I like, I struggle at times with getting lost in details which then don't fit what i was going for even if i was technically able to paint the details correctly.
Welcome back!
thx Franco!
Gary you’re back! Where have you been?
Luca - Thank you - well, quite busy with painting and creating full length on-line lessons - have a look
www.gumroad.com/garytuckerartist
Welcome back.!
thx Matt
So helpful, as always! Got my husband to watch too because he’s always trying to improve my set up for me and he said he recognized your voice, my first art teacher, from hearing me following your lessons from the kitchen table!!!
Ha ha Thx Kiana - I am glad to hearty voice can carry - most people ask me to "speak Up" :) have a great summer
Your video taught me an important note - get in there and do colorful washes. Do a next darker shade to suggest bulk objects like the tree and grass. Smallest details last and at this point maybe darkest darks. I'm too technical with my watercolor and its almost ocd.
also i must be lazy because I want to sit when I do my plein air X) lol
Fun to watch Gary...well done""
thx Tom! - lets do a duet the next time we paint together
Dear Gary, so happy to see you coming back to your incredibly pedagogical videos 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 You are my master in watercolor (I live in Dordogne where I hope you will come back for a training). Thank you thank you 😊
Francois - thank you - I will try to produce a few this summer...How I miss Dordogne - paradise - time stands still there - someday I hope to return
You made painting such a fun thing to see and to do. Greeting from Japan.
Thank you - I am happy if you enjoyed my antics :)
Genius 💐
Awesome, funny how contrasting values make the motif 😎
thx Jonathan - that's our biggest consideration - CONTRAST
Extrañaba tus video Gary!
thank you Gabriel :)
Omg...this was such a useful video thank you ...and so funny the demo...😂😀📻🖌..surprise ..
Thanks Gigi - it was fun to create it -
A quick release mount addition would be something to consider adding.
Im hoping to add a sherpa one day :)
Hi Gary! Welcome back! I know you won’t be away for too long. I’m interested in the half-inch easel shelf you shown.because I’ve got a very similar tripod like yours. Would you be kind enough to provide its key measurements?
Ah Thank you the outside dimensions are 15 x 12 - the cut outs will have to measured agains your easel - I used a piece of card board to create the measurements before cutting the wood.
Lol awesome
Thx Kenny!
Hello master! I was missing your videos and this one is particularly nice, fun and loosely. Love it.
I've never been passionate about painting outdoors, but after this exhibition of yours, I want to give it a try.
Beautiful Japanese-inspired garden, it's your backyard?!
I'm curious to know the colors you used in this beautiful watercolor.
Best regards and hugs from Brazil.
Thx Sonia - I encourage you to find a friend and start with sketching and a few colors...light hearted. The colors I used were a red - Vermillion, a green prusssion and yellow ochre -plus I always use leftovers :)
My full length lessons available here www.gumroad.com/garytuckerartist
@@GaryTuckerArtist yes !! I will, my promise. Tks master.

How do you use your sunshade? Do you clip it onto the painting? Thanks for the video, very interesting and entertaining!
Sunshade sits on my easel behind the paper - it will appear in a future episode
Great video but I would like to see the sun shade and how it works , thank you
thank you Miriam - stay tuned :)....it should appear suon
I need a brush caddy. I keep carting mine around without one and am paying the price. Did you get this one at Blick? I will check for one like you described. Thanks.
