Is the drummer trying to catch the bus? Being able to play certain rhythms, licks, fills etc. is one thing. Being able to make that swing is another form for skill. I highly respect the latter asset. With that said, I love the cats and their vitality!
That could be the reason, but many of we drummers prefer this side angle (actually I prefer diagonal- seriously). Eric Singer when first starting with KISS doing the club tours did the diagonal, & Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree does the diagonal. Mike Portnoy (formally of dream theater) when he was with "TransAtlantic" set up with the side view all the time. Also, Steve Jansen (drummer for & brother of David Sylvian) most always sets-up with the side view.
Shanni, first he's shaking hands with a guy in a wheelchair, then he's talking to an 11 year old boy in the front row and asking him how old he is. Then he tells the audience that this is the next generation.
Oh it was. Their whole performance was incredible. As if the 80s were just yesterday. Strong, crystal clear, just incredibly WOW. From the first until the last minute! And the little boy enjoyed it very much (his dad was with him, of course.)

How small is that stage if the drum kit is set up sideways and to the side of the stage?

Awesome!
Sadler asks the young kid, "Wie (vee) alt bist du?" (How old are you?) The reply from the kid is, "Elf" (11). :)
