Leesville Road may not have started strong, but the Pride made up for it with the finish.
Leesville Road defeated Pender 72-64 in the Kinston MLK Classic Saturday. The Pride (11-7) didn't grab its first lead until 3:28 remained, but coasted from there.
“We were fortunate to come out with a win playing a great Pender team,” Leesville Road coach Russ Frazier said. “As the game started flying around, we did a better job moving faster (and) our effort defensively was great.”
Pender (10-5) jumped out to a 7-2 lead highlighted by five points from JuJuan Carr, but Leesville Road kept it close in the first half due to five 3-pointers, including three by Carter Whitt. The Patriots' advantage never got above seven as they took a 33-30 lead into halftime.
Pender’s Jakwon Moore hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the third to put the Patriots ahead 39-32, but the Pride kept fighting. Leesville Road tied the game five times in the third quarter, including a basket from Chase Hakerem to knot it up at 47 heading into the fourth.
A 3-pointer from Kyrese Dye with 5:24 left put Pender up 58-53, but Leesville Road turned the tide with a 13-0 run, including a basket form Deon Daniels to give the Pride its first lead with 3:28 remaining. The Patriots wouldn’t get closer than four from there.
Despite the loss, Pender coach Rayford Hankins said he appreciated the effort of the players throughout.
“Our guys came out and played hard,” Hankins said. “I think we just didn’t execute late and had a couple of turnovers.”
Whitt scored 26 points with seven rebounds and seven assists, Alex Daniels had 14 points and four rebounds, Hakerem scored 10 points with six rebounds and Aaron Zemonek had 10 points and five rebounds for Leesville Road. For Pender, JuJuan Carr had nine points, 11 assists and eight rebounds and Moore had 16 points.
