  • This was a special cut I put together for Kiwirail so they could have a look at the footage I took over a period of a couple of weeks early this year. It was part of a larger project that will take some time to put together.
    Starting at the coal load depot in Ngakawau on the West coast of the South Island, through to Refton then onto Otira where the bankers take the train through the Otira tunnel to Arthurs Pass. Then across the Southern Alps through to Lyttleton where the coal is loaded onto ships destine for Asia.
    Special thanks to all who helped me.

    Brilliant work, thank you for sharing it with us. I recognised the partially-restored 3-stall engine shed at Reefton. The Reefton Historic Trust Board is working to develop a 1950s-era steam precinct there.

    @wappaw Hey there, the tunnel is 8.5km long (5.28 Miles) and sits between Arthur's Pass and Otira in the South Island on New Zealand. Thanks for watching. Regards

    Hello Martin, I'm really impressed with your videos, you work on the railroad? and machines? This railroad is very much like the railroads in Brazil EFVM eg, FCA and ALL who also has only 1 meter narrow gauge we have many varieties of locomotives from GE U20C even the heaviest DDM45 or BB-45.
    Big hug for congratulations for your work

    Yes in deed. You can't go through this tunnel anymore unless you have done a gas mask course. The camera was heavily duct taped to the front of the lead loco. And fortunately was still there at the other end :-)

    Great Video Marty, I taking they use 3 engines + the existing 2 thru the Otira Tunnel! I have serious questions about exporting coal from the west coast so the chinese can burn it and contribute to global warming at our expense, thanks again mate, PS new sub!

    • @MartyJM01
      @MartyJM01  Před rokem

      Hey Tony. They now have 4 bankers based at Otira and mix them with the 2 on the front of the coal train. I know what you mean, global warming is a huge problem but at the moment steel can only be made using coal so until they come up with something better it may as well be us they buy it from 🙂
