    I thought that the purpose of the manhood stuff between the brothers, and also the outburst between Dione and Mary, was to show the internal conflict they both had of being jealous of them for living the life they didn't and the longing they had for the sibling relationship they missed out on. I felt that Carl was somewhat going back and forth on deciding if he wanted to hurt his brother or not, and it was both a brotherly hazing/rite of passage type of thing and a genuine struggle on acting out his aggression towards him. In the end, I think the brotherhood part of his struggle won because he ultimately helped him with his bully.

    In regards to Carl and Sebastian's relationship, (big brother, makes little brother a man scene) do you remember towards the end of the movie when Carl told Cheryl that he peed on himself until last year (or this year...I cannot recall what he exactly said). Rewind back to when Carl made Sebastian walk to the edge of the roof and Sebastian began to urinate on himself. Carl goes from being angry and jealous to empathizing with Sebastian. So my thoughts are that both brothers shared bed wetting in common. I don't know if that clearly conveys him making his little brother a man, but it does show that he had some sort of compassion for him, and later Carl does help Sebastian beat up his bully (or did he kill him?!) Which was suppose to make Sebastian prove himself as a man.

    Great breakdown especially Carl image in the mirror, I didn't notice that but it's a beautiful shot. I think the manhood part up on the roof to me was kind of Carls way of adding some element of fear to Sebastians perfect life. Him being forced to live without his mother going through all the hardships of life without the comfort of a mother and because of her, it feels like it was his way of having him face something traumatizing. I agree that for me it wasn't about race, to me she was more so disguising herself because she didn't want to be recognized from her previous life. She never denied being black, I think the issue she had from her daughter wearing more ethnic styled hairdo's was wondering where it was coming from. She did everything to get as far away from anyone in her past finding her, so where would her daughter pick up these styles? She knew she left children behind, children that would be of a certain age by now and could possibly (and did) show up during any part of her children's lives be it dating, going to highschool and or college at some point. I think when she saw Carl, she knew who he was as he could have favored his father a lot. I think that would explain her behavior of wanting to keep him far away because she didn't know if he himself knew who she was but in her heart she knew her past finally caught up to her. I think the siblings were going back n forth on if they should carry out what they came there to do. Possibly meeting their new siblings could have been a factor in that. When Carl said maybe we should leave but he's then reminded by Dione that she never went to prom, so the plan was back on. Then another deciding factor was her behavior when they showed up at the partr. Then her handing them money to leave, that scene was great. The look Carl and Dione shared, though silent, spoke volumes. I knew at that moment they were definitely going to do what they came there to do. When Neve ( which is Even backwards which stood out to me) mood suddenly changed at the family reunion this to me was part of her protective personality of herself, whenever she's stressed out this personality kicks in and she's ready to run. I felt bad that the father paid the price for her poor decisions in life. I also don't get the feeling that she was the abusive parent when she whooped him with the slipper, I actually think it showed that her blackness started to show. I'm not saying this is the case for every black household but when we did something out of pocket we got whooped for it and again not for everyone but a lot of white households don't believe in whooping children. So for me and this is just what I got from that scene is that in all her getting away from that life, she in fact still had that ingrained in her. The only indication of her being abused was the belt and his abruptness in his voice message demanding she picked up the phone, so I don't know how badly she was abused but it at least does say she might not have been lying and at least for herself she felt abused. I will say I thought this movie would end way differently than it did but I loved it. I thought the acting from everyone was great and I don't get to say that often. The actor Bukky who you pointed out... OMG her performance was amazing and I could feel the sister and brother connection without knowing their story, besides them being left. You can tell he took care of his sister and always made sure she was good. Sorry this is a long comment but there's a lot to the story to unravel lol. I don't understand the negative reviews this movie is getting but I thought it was fantastic.

    • @Auziahtv
      @Auziahtv  Před rokem +1

      I wish I had time to respond to everything you said. But I read it all and I agree you really got it right here. To your point about hitting the son with the shoe, I think that corporal punishment in the black household is becoming more generational. While I got whooped sometimes, I’m sure it wasn’t as much as my parents did when they were young, and I won’t do it at all as a parent. So when I saw it in the movie I didn’t automatically associated with black child rearing, but you make a very valid point. And I agree Bukky was phenomenal! That actress is going places. I have no idea why people hated this film I thought it was for the most part brilliantly done.

    I'm a director and I really enjoyed this review!
    Some notes, things like using ECU to capture emotion, motifs, using color to foreshadow or share info, those are basic things taught in filmmaking. So I disagree that those things specifically make it similar to get out. I think it's the stylization of it that makes it similar to Get Out, if that makes sense. That being said, the director of this film straight up said he watched Get Out the same year he thought of this idea, and was "inspired". I feel like in his quest to capture so much of the tone of Get Out and also US, he missed some opportunities to show his personal style as a director.
    Other thoughts. You mentioned about the mom being potentially abusive. I agree. I believe the mom lied about the dad being abusive. I believe she was mentally ill. I believe Carl said he was sanctioned as a kid/ committed to a psyche ward. The mom mentions she left them with an aunt, who gave them up right away so I think they inherited their crazy from her.
    The brothers -- I felt like this was a typical male ego thing of showing off bravado. Carl was jealous and wanted to prove, that he was more of a man than his baby brother. I thought similar to your mom, that maybe he was setting his brother up to be a killer of someone else in the family, by killing/hurting (was the bully killed?? lol) the bully. I also think the siblings were torn, especially with them being mentally ill themselves, between loving and hurting.
    Side note, did ANYONE think the bathtub scene with baby sister playing with the afro pick in the bubbles was weird? It was literally under the bubbles and then it emerges like she was... nevermind. lol. I know the "pick" was a secret. As a director, I would have never shot that scene like that. Just felt like he wanted to show a woman in a hot tub for hot tub's sake. It also seemed like she was attracted to her sister in some scenes. But, I don't know. Maybe it was just me. Just felt weird and unnecessary.
    There were some missteps in the film. There were open loops that weren't closed. But I loved the ending. I also liked the different chapters. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the director does.
    PS- I know you mentioned you were a storyteller. Are you writing? If not, you should be!

    They really should've just not spoiled the mom connection so early. It took away from the ambiguity and suspense. The performances were strong though and the intensity at the end made it disturbing. Something as simple as the faucet running and not being able to turn it off. Watching them slosh through the house made me so uncomfortable.
    I still don't know how to feel about the race part because it seems Cheryl has other issues. But I do think her distress at the "ethnic" hairstyle was included for a reason. She's so deep into assimilating but we don't have much to go on other than her having unambiguously black children. I wish maybe they weren't introduced with negative behaviors, playing into her prejudices, but then still confront her with the same rage.

    Wow! This was a fantastic analysis and I think you are spot on! I watched this film last week, and it has stayed with me. I got elements of Jordan Peele from the first scene. I do think that Nathaniel White used a lot of those elements in a unique way to tell this story, and I especially loved that the second chapter told the events from the children’s point of view. I think both of her first children were very conflicted about whether they should be angry or make peace with the new family.
    I also agree that even though race was a part of the film, it wasn’t the main point. It was more about a woman who was adept at doing what she had to do to survive, as you said.
    One thing I wanted to mention regarding race was Neve’s wigs and how she kept scratching under them showed that she wasn’t completely comfortable as Neve, or who she created Neve to be. Her husband even asked why do you cover your hair, showing that he lived her for who she (thought) she was. So she wasn’t trying to make herself more white per se, but trying to look what she thought would make her more sophisticated. And, it was something she imposed on herself. I also was confused by her reaction when she saw her daughter with the curly ponytail. She seemed upset and not sure how to respond. Was it jealousy over her child’s natural hair? And later she was upset when her daughter’s hair was braided. I think she wasn’t completely sure of who she was and her identity in general. That was a big hint at how she had no sense of self to me.

Definitely saw the Jordan peele influences but I just wasn’t a fan of the story told - I will credit the writer with the effort to put something different out here but there was no one in this film that was really likable. The bi-racial kids were punished for their mom’s lies, they both thought that had a new friend- and wanted to actually have a relationship with their siblings, their father was killed by their brother, and to top it off their mom leaves them as well. I agree - it was solely about race but it just left me asking more questions by the end but not questions I’d actually want answered in a sequel. More like questions I wish the movie actually addressed. I appreciate your review but not enough to go watch it again lol - this is a story I could do without. Cheryl was an opportunist -hence her sister’s tone when they were on the phone. You can also see how she manipulated her white husband when buying son his birthday gift to throwing the gala. Yes she worked but you can tell he was the breadwinner. Not a maternal bone In her body. Just looking for her next mark to use and maybe give him a couple more babies. The black kids had my sympathy until they kidnapped the other family. I’d been completely fine if they kidnapped their mom. She was wrong, she was guilty. The performances by the abandoned kids was good but I just thought the castings was off. Pulled me out of the story.

    To me it wasn't about Race really. They used it to help tell the story of Cheryl/Neve's old life coming back to bite her on the ass. The moment she is told that two black people have moved into her local area, she immediately shits herself because she knows immediately that they are her kids coming to look for her, before she even sees them.
    She explains later on that she didn't think her white husband would take on her two black children. It just goes to show what kind of character she is. She's more concerned about her new idyllic life and new husband than she is about her own children.
    In this movie, Cheryl/Neve isn't likeable at all. You know very early on that ages a selfish woman who won't take responsibility for her actions.
    In Get Out, you feel really bad for the main character because he is a really sweet, lovely guy who gets forced into a situation that's going to put him in imminent danger. He didn't deserve it and he only ended up in that situation because of his girlfriend suggesting to him to come and meet his family
    In Get Out, it's about a Cult who lure black people into their community and then enslave them by using hypnosis and by surgically removing a part of their brain so they can be functional but also be completely submissive. They are used because black people are seen as being faster, stronger and perhaps smarter than a white people.
    I also agree that Cheryl/Neve would have taken on ANY type of identity and life if it meant she got to live how she wanted. The first life got hard so she ran, the second one got hard so she left again.

    This film is TOTTALY ABOUT RACE. I wish it was given more time to marinate however it reminds me loosely based on an imitation of life. WE love sweeping race under the blanket unless it is surface. American racism is nothing more than terrorism and it affects our souls like a parasite. We all act differently. There is no right or wrong way and no one wins especially those within the black community ; INCLUDING lighter skinned and biracial people . We have become so detached to race because we have made it trendy and pop. We are literally living on stolen land and GEORGE ZIMMERMAN is still walking around while white people are still making jokes about skittles. I'll admit that the film needed SO MUCH MORE TIME TO MARINATE and it could have been very dope. We don't get enough time for character development however for alot of us especially those who are ambitious in white america ; this film is a TRUE REALITY for what it means to be an outsider in white/euro america; europe. Woman of color, black , black queer , darker skinned and LIGHTER SKINNED black people. We are all impacted

    Thank you for a great analysis! I couldn’t tell what exactly was similar in the little details and you did. This felt to me like reversed Get out, as she ran to “whiteness” and wanted to be reinvented. I also saw elements of “us” in the confrontation scenes. I found the water very unnerving and was relieved when she turned it off. From that moment she put her logical hat on and follow through with her plan. Fascinating character, the black kids could’ve been more fleshed out by showing more than telling: “sectioned”, “pay the baddies”, clearly a lot happened and hearing about it somehow does not have the same impact that it would if the film was about the children and their journey. We don’t get to truly know the lead protagonist, she’s always a mystery because she’s not herself… always playing a role to survive? (like you said) or enjoy her life and not caring for anyone but herself?

    That was the first thing I wondered when I watched the trailer of the movie but after seeing the movie it's entirely different from Get Out. I found the abandoned children’s anger to be way too over the top. Look, I get it, I was abandoned in my own way as a child. However, the anger was very heavy handed to me. I'm still a bit confused... When she saw the walls caving in, in the kitchen could this be a sign she was suffering from hallucinations? She also mentions being forced to have the second child.. Possible trauma? Pstd? Even in the beginning she looked his she was suffering from some sort of mental health illness

    I do feel like there were certain choices made that were just unnecessary. Like Marvin and Abi having a lot of misplaced anger towards everyone but Cheryl. Marvin's decision to kill Cheryl's husband was completely unnecessary. Also Marvin almost pushing Sebastian to his death and only stopping in his tracks after Sebastian peed on himself also felt unnecessary. Overall the characters we were supposed to sympathize with oftentimes came off as extremely unlikable, even with the understanding that they were damaged, abandoned kids that just wanted their mother.

    Trigger Warning ⚠️ :
    Regarding the belt scene…I processed that as her on the brink of harming herself (via asphyxiation). I could be mistaken, but that’s what came to my mind immediately.
    Also, I think that manhood test was to see if Sebastian would be down for getting revenge on his attacker. It isn’t fully explained in the film, so unsure if the bully is dead, but I suspect they made it look like he fell from the roof of the building. That’s why he asked if he thought he could survive that fall.

Also, since most Black males (the common Black males and Black male celebrities) are the main perpetrators of colorism against their own darker skinned Black women, and the fact that the world knows how Black males worship White and light skin. In fact, this movie would have been more truthful if the story was about a Black male who left his Black family to marry and have biracial children with a White woman or with any woman who was not Black, being that this happens often with Black males. Africans have a nationality, knowing their origns.. Americans as well have our origins here in Americas. but the IDENTITY "BLACK" is a legal construct designed by corporate govt's and pushed by the entertainment industries to dehumanize entire nations of people. we are to old not to know our colors... and to continue ignoring the fact that people mimic the disinformation that is fed to them. very serious matter bc a movie like this gets you emotionally involved with finding fault in a fictitious "BLACK" mother, who mistreats her children, while the audience is being suckered into the perpetuation of COLOR CODES and the agreed to Class system that wars against those that accept the Identities.. Black has nothing to do with skin tone.. and if it does.. then the whole nation of people have to be mentally incompetent bc BLACK has never been brown... and BROWN has never been tan...

    • @Auziahtv
      @Auziahtv  Před rokem +2

      I agree with you that “black” is not typically used as a skin tone (except for black people, because people with black skin do exist) and that normally we use black to describe a culture.
      Where we disagree is the notion that “blackness” or “black” is not real. It is very real, because it extends past color. It is a private conversation. It is a secret understanding. You are either apart of the conversation or you are not. We have chosen as a society to classify it as black. That doesn’t bother me. Black is a home for me to which I quite comfortably reside.
      It is when others, who can not be apart of the conversation, but wish to, feel entitled to, and demand to, that blackness becomes an issue. But that is not the issue of blackness, it is the issue of others. This is the basis in which the great Toni Morrison explored in her work. A world in which black was free of any other opinions.. I would encourage you to dive deep into her work if you haven’t already. Then my perspective may make more sense.

  • @vitorsilveira571
    @vitorsilveira571 Před rokem

    I really can't understand how this film isn't mainly about race (or gendered racism if you prefer). Regardless of moral judgments, the fact that the protagonist denies her racial identity as a black woman by completely assimilating to a white society so that she finally "succeeds" in life (even if it takes leaving her origins and darker-skinned children behind) tells a lot about a colonial and dominating system of representation that economically/socially/polically oppresses, undermines and excludes women of color from having a decent life in any modern society. Of course, there are some parallel themes to consider such as coercive maternity, but racism is central in this narrative. Cheryl's "ego ideal" (Neve) is white and not just in skin color, but also in aesthetics, ideology, behavior, expectations and so on.

      It is about race because even her hair is concealed to hide her blackness. She doesn't even allow her husband to touch it. Even when it itches, she doesn't take it off. When she goes to the principal's office to report the older son, the man speaks on how they don't want to seem to be firing him because of. Her daughter returns home with cornrows or something and their guest calls the hairstyle ethnic. The older boy even tells the younger one that people " like us" something something...the director makes so much plot points that he fails to tie up in the end. The film feels like a big idea someone had but fails to tackle these issues....

    The actress, who played in the movie, "Passing", does not look European. She has broad features (lips, nose, darker skin tone compared to most Whites). A lighter skinned actress should have played that part.

    The stray was totally different the whole plot isn't the same it's a black girl that don't want to be black Jordan peele is a white family that want to be black

    It definitely was about race...."wonderful morning," she practices an accent. The daughter has baby hairs. She has a persistence itch on her hair which she hides. The idea of black people in her life, makes her recoil. There are two black drawing on her side mirror...she tries to have the boy fired but the principal speaks about how they don't want to seem prejudiced...you focused mainly on the elements of the film which was insightful but I disagree that it wasn't about race...The boy does even tell his big brother that the mother wants to be white...she even mentions to the husband that he wouldn't have been comfortable raising two black children...

      I was very clear that everyone has been inspired by someone else. But there’s nothing wrong with comparison. Art is meant to be enjoyed savored and analyzed
