    Michael Hutchence apparently lost his smell and partially taste after a fall during a fist fight, and it added substantially to his depression. Pullman is a classy guy so he might downplay it quite a bit. Mind you, this man is 65 so he has lost his smell some 40 years ago - yet he still is keeping up his search for a cure. He did mention the lack of empathy.

The irony of his speaking on the lack of empathy from people and then the panels crass reaction; exposes how insensitive and narcissistic most "celebrities" really are. I hope he tries dry fasting (or even water fasting) as that is the only thing that will cause the body to produce new stem cells. There are also new stem cell treatments (available in Mexico etc) that may help as well as using a vibrational plate machine.

    • @castlerobber
      @castlerobber Před 5 lety +3

      It is. You don't even want to eat because the food has no flavor, just the "true tastes" of sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savory/umami. And you don't realize how many subtle environmental smells you're taking in, until all you have is "empty" air. I lost my sense of smell completely for a week or so last year after the flu. It took several months to come back all the way.

      I have hyposmia I think (severely decreased sense of smell) and people don't get that it's dangerous. I usually can't smell toxic substances or food that has gone bad. One remedy is cayenne pepper nasal spray. A lot of people it works for but when I tried it, it only worked for about an hour.

    • @milo8515
      @milo8515 Před 5 lety +2

      @@ILoveRomances that's very true. I would never smell a fire in my house or a gas leak. I've probably got about 5% taste compared to someone who is able to smell, can only really taste sweet or sour.
      Has your sense of taste been affected at all? 😊

    • @ILoveRomances
      @ILoveRomances Před 5 lety +6

      @@milo8515 People make fun of me because I can eat foods that don't go together one right after the other like I'll eat fish and then ice cream, not in the same dish but I can have a bite of fish and then a bite of ice cream with no problem. Tastes, like smells, don't linger at all for me. I almost never need a palate cleanser. I tend to like foods with very few ingredients. I rarely use condiments or sauces. My palate is pretty unsophisticated.
      The biggest issue for me is that I can't detect unpleasant odors like when a room is stuffy. I'm always self-conscious that my apartment, my clothes, my car, or myself smells and I can't tell. I stopped wearing perfume because I would use too much and wouldn't be able to tell. Deodorant is a lot easier to get right, thank goodness.
      I was in an apartment fire before and everyone else was out because it took me longer to detect the smoke. I've used too much ammonia before and other people were really affected by it and I wasn't. I've thought about being a sanitation worker or working around toxic chemicals and using it as an advantage, lol.
      It's really frustrating because usually people can tell when other people are without their other senses but people don't believe you about a loss of smell. It's always, "you can't smell that?". With hyposmia, it's worse because sometimes you can smell and sometimes you can't so people think you're faking.

    • @figuss
      @figuss Před 5 lety +1

      I'm a congenital anosmic, which means that I was born without a sense of smell, and all of the things that you guys have mentioned are so true. The thing that hurts the most is when people, whether don't believe you or are ignoring the issue. So many people ask me constantly if I can smell a certain thing, and when I say no they continue with "well, what about ____ ?" So annoying... It's also very interesting to read your point of view about food because I don't think my sense of taste is much different from everyone else, but what would I know. 😁 The only thing that I know for sure is that I like my food very salty, or very sugary, etc... So maybe it has to do something with a decreased sense of taste. I'm also very curious about how you guys discovered that you weren't able to smell, especially you @Milo Plays because 4 years old is very young! It took me 14 years to realize that I wasn't able to smell anything and 6 more years to hear a diagnosis! 😅

    • @ILoveRomances
      @ILoveRomances Před 5 lety

      @@figuss I had a bad cold as a teenager and a couple of years later, I realized that I wasn't able to smell things like I used to, but since it's hyposmia and I could still smell here and there, it wasn't as noticeable at first. It helps when I'm around relatives cooking chitlins, though, lol. I'd say 90% of the time, I don't smell anything but if I try to, I have to hold whatever the object is directly under my nose but even then, it only lasts for about a minute or less.

    How does he react to smelling salts? Does he just feel it?

    • @castlerobber
      @castlerobber Před 5 lety

      According to Wikipedia, "Smelling salts release ammonia (NH3) gas, which triggers an inhalation reflex (that is, causes the muscles that control breathing to work faster) by irritating the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs."
      So, basically, yes. It isn't the actual smell of the ammonia, but the irritation of the tissues, that gives smelling salts their effect.

    Sense of smell sucks anyway, it's so overrated. Too many awful smells in the world (I could live without the good ones). I'd have no problem if I lost my sense of smell.

    • @michaelmyersfan1001
      @michaelmyersfan1001 Před 4 lety

      Sense of smell affects sense of taste. Imagine eating something and not tasting it? Taste is a big reason why we search for food when we are hungry, to furfill our craving. It's why you choose flavoured crisps over regular crisps, although no sense of taste would be even worse for regular crisps because you won't even taste the salt or potatoe! Smell heightens performance in the bedroom. Smelling your partner's hair, perfume, skin, (area downstairs XD) all heighten your senses for intercourse. You also put yourself at risk for losing your sense of smell. If your house was burning while you was asleep, you wouldnt smell the fire in its early stages. If you left the gas on, you wouldnt be able to smell it. A lot of people who have lost their sense of smell claim to be very self concious. Not being able to know if something smells bad like your room, car, shoes, yourself, if something has gone rotten without you knowing, a dead animal ie. A rat behind something, damp. So many things to take into consideration when losing your sense of smell, I can guarantee you wouldnt like it as much as you think you wouldnt mind it at all. Every person I've read about losing their sense of smell seems to be really distraught about it. Be careful what you wish for.

      You've got problems. I'd rather... lose a leg, arm, testicle, ability to get an erection, any organ that's not the heart or brain, sense of touch, hundreds and thousands of dollars, years of my life, etc.
