After a year of searching for this lens , I just won a clean copy of the Auto Sears 55mm f1.4 today at auction and I could not be more excited.. It's known that Tomioka designed and built the lens yet I've also heard that Cosina took over where Tomioka left off at some point. During your research into this lens, have you found any serial number list that can identify what factory produced the 55mm f1.4s? My copy begins with 504xx. Also, how do you feel about the Re-Auto Topcor 58mm f1.4? I think that is on par with some of the best from that era....Anyhow, love your channel, thanks for the brutally honest reviews. cheers mate.

I picked up this lens about a month ago for $60. I was at a yard sale and found another one for $10. This is the absolute sharpest lens I've used. It is even sharper than the Minolta 50mm 1.4.

I just got a Sears 55mm f/1.4 lens and the image quality with my A6500 is spectacular. IMO. it is going to be quite a nice portrait lens with the crop sensor camera...

I got one a few months ago from UK, had it in the basement until I had it tested for radiation. Turned out to be a bit higher than background radiation but not by much. It is really something else than Fujinon XF56 which I also have. Thanks for the recommendation.

I agree, the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Oreston 50mm f1.8 is a super creative lens. It was my first vintage lens purchase for $70 and a steal even at that price. The close focus is also a wonderful feature. I chose to buy a Focusing helicoid adapter which opens the lens up to also making really great macro shots. I'm in search of the Auto Sears and feel I'll have one soon. I'm trying to be patient so I don't over pay. Thanks for taking the time to review the Auto Sears. You and at least 4 others on CZcams have convinced me that this one is next on my list.

Good review. I have it and it is indeed excellent, however... someone recently gave me a clean 55mm Pentax Super Takumar 2.0 and frankly I don't see any difference in sharpness and color (both on a Fuji HX-1). Plus it's a smaller and lighter lens and currently less expensive on Ebay. I love the scalloped focus ring on both lenses. What's your impression of the 55mm Super Takumar?

in short: would you recommend the Pancolar 50 1.8 over the Rikenon and the Pentacon? how would you rank the three of these in order of overall performance.

Just get a closeup tube set from Fuji. But just the Fotasy adapter to Fuji acts like one. Remember, a couple tubes and this lens starts to become a 90mm macro, but It's still 1.4. You need to get this lens to work for you. Every movie needs a character actor. This is that guy.

I bought a Rikenon 55 1.4 years ago because it was cheaper than the Canon equivalent. I'm not sure about his copy but with mine the rear element does not protrude past the adapter at all, so I've been able to use it on Canon full frame and crop sensor bodies without mirror slap. It is a nice lens if you don't mind manual focus. It's difficult to nail 1.4 focus right manually (specially in low light) because the DOF is very shallow, I'd recommend using an adapter or camera with a focus assist feature.

Works with my 5d mkii. I read somewhere that some of the early adapters were thinner, I may have a thicker one? It doesn't protrude past the adapter though, so I guess that's my test. No issues. Bought the camera, adapter and lens all together from someone used on the ebay.

There are at least three versions of these lenses made by different manufacturers - Tomioka, Cosina and (probably) Sankor. They all look pretty much the same (although there are some minor differences allowing to distinguish between them) but have different optical construction.

You can use these on Canon eos aps-c just not full frame unless you mod the the mirror or rear element barrel that protrudes inside the body. I used them on a 5d using hyperfocal focusing but could never get close to infinity. I use my 50d for all my vintage 50mm and lower focal length lens (because this problem) but on longer focal lengths my full frames works fine to infinity because the rear elements sits further back in the barrel.

finally got my hands on the Auto Sears 55mm f/1.4 for around US$80.
I am planning to send it in for radioactive tests this week as my lens looks yellow. Sharpness is reasonably good for portraits wide open f/1.4, but it is too hazy for reproduction shots. Stop down the lens to f/2.8 for improved contrast and the reduction of haze. One thing I've noticed, the images that were taken with this lens lack chromatic aberration (after f/2.8) found in other vintage lenses.

It's not an easy lens to switch to from a full-frame and auto focus system (at least in my experience). Don't be always tempted to shoot at low ISO's (and therefore slower shutter speeds / camera shake). I've practiced with mine at 400/800 ISO at 1/125 or above, in the f:8 range at first (on a Fuji XH1), and the results were excellent. It's not that easy to shoot wide open with a manual lens and get tack sharp results, it takes practice and I've been shooting for a very long time. Just my 2 cent worth.

Thoriated and Non Thoriated lens versions - I have three of these lenses, One branded Rikenon and two branded Sears...Of the two lenses baring the Sears badge one is radioactive and the other is not.
Radioactive Sears version = contains and earlier 5 digit seriel number beginning with numbers 50xxx on my copy
Non-Radioactive Sears version = 6 digit seriel # beginning with 29xxxx on my copy
Radioactive = The mount on the Radioactive Sears and Rikenon lens has a silver ring on the bottom whereas the non-radioactive lens contains all black paint.
Radioactive = Sears version contains a rear element that is a few millimeters larger in diameter and the Radioactive Rikenon version has a significantly larger rear element that is almost the same diameter of the front!. The Radioactive Rikenon also bears a 5 digit seriel number beginning with 21xxx.
Radioactive Rikenon - Chrome Nose up front and a silver painted groved ring around lens mount.
All three lenses contain a completely flat rear element which is usually a signature trait of Tomioka made lenses. Tomioka-made Yashinon and Mamiya lenses bare the same flat rear element.
    Hope this helps.

Hey, i bought this lens a while ago but cant seem to like it a whole lot... my main criteria for this is the minimum focusing distance of at least 50cm. with that distance the wipe open aperture doesnt even give the unsharpness i am searching for in such an aperture. my flektogon 35mm 2.4 gives MUCH better results with littel to no distortion of the image and a min focusing distance of 20cm... it feels like its actually less.
question: what do you think of the CZJ Pancolar 50mm f/1.8? its min focusing dostance is 35cm and the aperture should be decent enough at 1.8.
i also have the pentacon 50mm 1.8 and like the grainy look, but how about that Pacolar? does it have similar image quality as the flektogon 35m? can you recommend the pancolar 50?

I found a Ricoh camera with rikenon auto 50mm 1.7 on it. Is that lens considered as M42? I have a fujifilm xt20. What kind of adapter do I need? Sorry, newbie here. Thanks and more power!

IMO for old lens you need full frame. Especially on 24 mpx. I've tested Helios-103 on crop a6300 and on fullframe A7 II. On crop it's just usable. On fullframe it shines. I preffer crop though to keep it small so now using Lens Turbo II.
