I bought a $400 vacuum, $15 of chicken for dinner, and a $1 note pad. The lady came and grabbed my cart, ripped it out of my hands, and said she didn’t think I scanned the note pad. My receipt showed her I had. But I said so I’ll pay $400 for a vacuum but not $1 for a notepad? Okay.

Asia, I agree. There is definitely a risk involved with self check out. I literally watched a lady get tazed, and hauled to jail because the grocery store worker didn't see the woman scan an item.
So after the customer was sitting in her car (with children in the car watching every thing unfold), an officer politely (at first) asked the woman to show her receipt as proof of the purchase of the item in question. The customer had the receipt there, but she refused to show it. Although this probably made her look more suspicious, her point was a valid one. 1. There is no law that requires the customer to show the receipt, so she had a right to decline. 2. It was the store employee's word against the customer's word, so the burden of proof should be on the store, not the customer.
The customer offered to go back in the store with the officer and watch the video of her checking out.
The officer refused and things became more and more tense because he was trying to convince her to prove her innocence rather than have the store prove she was guilty. He should have either made them review the tape or let her go with a warning, or they could have banned her from the store.
Nope, the officer got frustrated and demanded the lady get out of the car, when she refused ultimately he tazed her, ripped her clothes in a scuffle, and took the innocent (until proven guilty) customer to jail, all while she INSISTED she was innocent.
It turns out the lady purchased EVERYTHING she had with her that day. She is now suing the grocery store chain. I believe it was Publix. Please go watch it. Be careful at the self check out. I use them, but I am changing that habit after seeing both the video of the innocent customer and the warning from the attorney.
I believe in a warning before a destruction. So this is our warning to be mindful of that self check out counter.
OAN: Unless you are willing to take one for the team (this lady was willing and I love her for it, because it made me aware), go ahead and SHOW YOUR RECEIPT. You may avoid further harrassment and unfair treatment. Peace and blessings. 😍👍🏼🤟🏽

Stores have cameras all over the ceiling and inside the check out kiosk. Always remember that their cameras are ONLY FOR THEIR PROTECTION, doesn't have to be released for you protection, or the video could be heavily edited before you get a copy. I usually look over the self checkout and put left over things in a hand basket or on top of their screen. This way I will not rush through and put something in my check-bags. The problem with self checkouts are the store employees. I've had the store employees follow me around the store then to the checkout. I've been in the checkout line and 4-5 employees kept surrounding me at the checkout. One of the employees came up way to close behind me while I was loading my groceries into the cart. This made me uncomfortable. When I check the change return slot, no change was there. I had over 90¢ in change that was stolen by the employee. Knowing that there are multiple cameras listening, I loudly said that it would be a shame for you employees to lose your jobs for stealing the customers change. You can't just come this close to a customer without the customer thinking something is wrong. A supervisor came and ask me what was the problem. I told her that they had thieves working for them stealing the customers change.

She then acknowledged that the screen that came up needed for her to put in my age, and she heard the beep but never came over to do that, and she knows that I hit the option to bypass the system bc the glitch did not ask for my age or an agent to assist me. A store worth shopping in would not confront a customer unless they knew FOR SURE that the customer was concealing an item. Also, most stores won't report anything less than $3,000 because police will not prosecute for less.
The biggest obstacle concerning self-checkouts is customer liability. If a customer leaves behind an item or change, the store is not responsible for it and holds no liability or obligation to investigate further.

This was THE worst attempt to justify stealing I may have ever heard, lol. If someone leaves an item on the checkout, then you clear it before you even get started. These aren't setup to be a scavenger hunt. Grocery store products aren't placed in camouflaged patterns to evade your detection. What this lady at 1:00 said literally can't happen to anyone unless they have some measure of dementia, in which case there are still manned checkouts with employees doing it for you, you just have to wait a bit longer in line.
I've never had an issue with self checkout and frankly I love how they shortened the time I have to wait in line. Remembering the 80s and 90s, LINES SUCKED. So much faster now. Self checkout takes a little getting used to, but the trade off more than makes up for it; and again, no it's not possible to "accidentally" place an item you didn't purchase, into your bag.

The store have self checkout attendants. If you want to suggest something to shoppers, it should be, put all selections in the grocery cart or basket before approaching checkout counter or self checkout kiosk. You'll tend to forget small items held in hand. Also sometimes I've got home and decovered items I didn't select nor have listed on my receipt. When taken the item back it had not been scanned, suggesting it left in the cart by someone else and overlooked by me. Depending on overall occurrences, management may require you just pay for the item and later notify lost prevention of the incident.
